CCP Games announced on March 6, 2025, that Stefán Þórarinsson, whom it described as a former Central Bank of Iceland economist, would lead economic research for EVE Frontier. The studio said the initial work would examine monetary policy, trade, digital assets and player behavior through Founder Access in a controlled environment. Those were planned areas of inquiry, not reported results.
Who is EVE Frontier’s new Head of Economy?
CCP named Stefán Þórarinsson to the role in an announcement dated March 6, 2025. CCP described him as a former economist at the Central Bank of Iceland with expertise in macroeconomic analysis, monetary policy and market dynamics. The announcement does not provide a full employment history or quantify his experience. CCP’s announcement is the primary source; GamesBeat reported the appointment the following day.
In the announcement, Þórarinsson said: “Virtual economies are no longer just systems of play; they are living, evolving financial systems that demand serious study.” The statement describes his view of the subject, not a finding about EVE Frontier’s economy.
What did CCP say he would study?
CCP framed the first Frontier Economic Policy update around four topics. The studio presented these as research questions for the game’s virtual economy, not as conclusions already established.
- Monetary policy and inflation: how economic levers might affect prices, currency stability and market behavior.
- Market equilibrium and trade: how supply and demand could change through player and non-player-character interactions.
- Assets and currency flows: how digital assets might influence economic activity within the game.
- Behavioral economics: how players make decisions, speculate and adapt.
CCP said this initial work would take place through Founder Access in a controlled environment, where the economy could be modeled and studied under different conditions. The announcement does not report measured inflation, trade results, player-behavior findings or other outcome statistics. These are questions about a game’s virtual economy; the announcement does not establish that its systems are equivalent to regulated real-world finance. CCP’s announcement and policy description set out the intended scope and setting.
How does the role compare with EVE Online’s earlier economist?
CCP has previously appointed an economist in connection with EVE Online, but the two announcements describe different games and different stated outputs. In 2007, CCP named Dr. Eyjólfur Guðmundsson as the MMO’s in-world Lead Economist and said he would analyze indicators such as inflation, economic growth and price trends, with quarterly reports planned. The 2025 EVE Frontier announcement instead emphasizes controlled Founder Access research into policy, trade, assets and behavior; it does not specify the same reporting cadence.

The 2007 press release also said Guðmundsson had “over 15 years’ experience” in economic studies and research and had authored or co-authored 15 publications. Those are CCP’s biographical claims from that announcement, not evidence about Þórarinsson or the newer game. CCP’s 2007 announcement documents the earlier role.

The appointment announcement establishes what CCP planned in March 2025, but it does not establish whether Þórarinsson still holds the position or which parts of the proposed research have produced results. The official EVE Frontier news index later lists economy-related subjects, including economic resets and a “Reset, Refine, Rebuild” policy update. Those listings show continued attention to economic policy and resets; on their own, they do not confirm the appointee’s current status or document the outcomes of the announced research.
