What was Project Awakening?
CCP described Project Awakening as a single-shard space-survival experience set in a decayed civilization within the EVE universe. The company announced on March 13, 2024 that a closed Phase III playtest was planned to begin May 21, 2024. CCP’s announcement presented the test as part of development, not a launch or public release.
GamesBeat’s May 7, 2024 interview with Pétursson added that roughly 5,000 people were expected to test a level for six weeks starting May 21. GamesBeat also reported that CCP anticipated additional tests later in 2024. What did CCP want players to build?
The pitch went beyond playing a survival game: CCP wanted to let players build or modify systems and tools around it. In the interview, Pétursson discussed a platform approach intended to give players room to extend the experience while preserving security, access controls, and a workable economy. He said the company believed it had a way to prevent people with programming access from changing the game simply to win, but stressed that the protections still needed testing.

“We believe we have figured out a way to make this all work in terms of security and access, but also in a sane economic way, people with our programming can’t just change the game so that they can win it,” Pétursson said. “But, of course, we have to test that. It’s a lot to get right.”
That statement describes CCP’s goal and confidence at the time, not independent evidence that the safeguards worked. The same interview identified practical challenges in scaling data and transactions. Those constraints matter because a player-building platform must balance openness with the ability to prevent exploits and protect the game’s economy.

How did blockchain fit the plan?
GamesBeat described the proposed technology as involving MUD by Lattice and a layered Ethereum approach. The idea was to create infrastructure for player-authored or modified systems in a persistent game world. The interview does not establish that the architecture met performance or security targets, nor does it document results from a completed test.
Blockchain was therefore part of the platform design CCP discussed, rather than proof of a finished feature set. The available 2024 reporting is best read as an account of what the studio intended to test—not as a technical audit or a guarantee about how the eventual game would work.

Is Project Awakening now called EVE Frontier?
Later coverage used the name EVE Frontier for CCP’s blockchain-game vision and connected it with Project Awakening. An a16z crypto podcast listing from September 13, 2024 described EVE Frontier as a blockchain-based overhaul of a space-survival game and linked it to Project Awakening. The listing provides historical naming context, not an authoritative current status update.
In a December 24, 2025 interview, BlockchainGamerBiz also discussed the project under the EVE Frontier name. That interview is further evidence of the later name being used, but the available sources do not definitively establish the formal naming relationship or the project’s status on October 8, 2026.

The firm, source-backed details here concern the 2024 announcement and interview. The searched sources do not establish whether the project remains in development, what its latest test results are, or whether applications or play access are currently available. The May 2024 test dates and expected duration should not be treated as a current schedule.
Pétursson said CCP was focused on finding an audience rather than obsessing over its size. That was the CEO’s stated priority in the interview, not a measure of the game’s eventual reception.
