Characters: What the Term Means in Digital Text and Games

A character in game text is an abstract Unicode unit—not the visible glyph. Here is how characters, code points, glyphs and text elements differ, and why the distinction matters.

In digital text, a character is an abstract unit of written language—not the particular picture you see on screen. Unicode assigns encoded identities to those units, while fonts and rendering systems turn them into visible glyphs. That distinction matters whenever a game stores names, displays dialogue, accepts player input, or localizes text.

What “character” means in Unicode

The Unicode Consortium defines a character as “the smallest component of written language that has semantic value.” It refers to an abstract meaning or shape, rather than one specific visual form. Unicode is a standard maintained by the Consortium for processing, storing, and exchanging text across languages and writing systems. See the Unicode Glossary and the Unicode FAQ.

Character, code point, glyph and text element

Character

A character is the abstract encoded unit, such as a Latin letter, punctuation mark or ideograph.

Code point

A code point is the numeric position used to identify an encoded value in Unicode. It is an identifier, not a drawing.

Glyph

A glyph is the visual shape produced when text is rendered. The Unicode Standard says, “Glyphs represent the shapes that characters can have when they are rendered or displayed,” and also states that “The Unicode Standard does not define glyph images.” A font, writing system and rendering engine determine the appearance. Read Chapter 2 of Unicode 18.0.0.

Text element

What a player experiences as one visible text unit can contain one encoded character or a sequence of encoded characters. A displayed symbol therefore cannot always be counted by looking at its apparent width or shape.

How many Unicode characters are there?

Measure Figure Qualification
Assigned characters 159,801 The Unicode Consortium’s FAQ count for Unicode 17.0; this is a count of assigned characters for that version, not every possible code point. See FAQ – Basic Questions.
Unicode codespace capacity 1,114,112 code points The capacity stated in the Unicode 18.0 specification. Capacity is not the same measure as the assigned-character count. See Unicode 18.0.0, Chapter 2.

Those numbers answer different questions: one reports assigned characters in a specified release, while the other describes the size of the addressable codespace.

Why this distinction matters in games

  • Storage and comparison: game data stores encoded values, so two strings that look similar may contain different sequences.
  • Rendering: the same encoded character can have different glyphs in different fonts, languages or platforms.
  • Input and editing: cursor movement, deletion and length limits may need to account for text elements made from multiple encoded characters.
  • Localization: supporting a language requires more than encoding. The Unicode Consortium also identifies keyboards and other input tools, fonts, language data and translations as necessary parts of language support; see its Unicode FAQ.

“Characters” can also mean fictional people

In a game-writing or literary context, characters may mean the people, creatures or other agents in a story. Educational resources from the Maine Department of Education use that meaning for character development and textual evidence, including this character-development lesson and a progression resource. That is a different subject from Unicode text characters, so a discussion of protagonists, villains or character arcs needs a separate scope.

The Bottom Line

For digital game text, a character is an abstract encoded unit; its code point identifies it, its glyph displays it, and a visible text element may contain several encoded characters. Always state which measure or meaning of “character” you are discussing.
