Chess.com passed 200 million members by April 24, 2025, according to TechCrunch. That figure counts membership, not necessarily people playing each day. The company later reported 243M+ members at the end of 2025 and announced 250 million on February 27, 2026, making 200 million a historical milestone rather than its current count.
When did Chess.com reach 200 million members?
TechCrunch reported the milestone on April 24, 2025, describing Chess.com as having surpassed 200 million members. The platform was founded in 2005 and launched in 2007, according to the same report. Its Chief Growth Officer, Albert Cheng, said: “It’s been played for over 1,500 years, which is just amazing. And even Chess.com is not a brand new company. It’s been around for almost 20 years. It feels really dynamic.” TechCrunch’s April 2025 report
How many members does Chess.com have now?
The 200-million figure was overtaken. Chess.com’s Q4 2025 board report listed 243M+ members as of December 31, 2025. The company then announced it had reached 250 million members on February 27, 2026. In that announcement, Cheng said: “Reaching 250M members is energizing! It’s a reminder that chess is a universal game that connects people across countries, languages, and ages. Our mission is to bring joy to the world through chess, and we are honored to continue serving and growing this community.” Chess.com’s 250-million announcement
Chess.com’s announcement also says the service reached 100 million members in December 2022 and characterizes its pace entering its third decade as almost 12 million members joining annually. That annual figure is the company’s retrospective description, not an independently audited growth rate.

How many people play Chess.com each day?
Membership and daily activity are different measures. TechCrunch reported more than 20 million chess games played daily and 1.5 million paying users at the April 2025 milestone; those are figures reported at that time, not current activity counts.
Chess.com’s Q4 2025 board report lists 8.7 million average daily active users, 13.5 million registrations, and 2.5 billion total games for Q4 2025. These figures describe different measures and periods: average daily active users is not total members, registrations are not daily players, and the games figure is a quarterly total. What does Chess.com membership include?
TechCrunch described Chess.com as offering games against other people or bots, daily games, puzzles, chess news, and competition streaming. The platform’s headline membership figure therefore refers to accounts across a broad chess service, not a count limited to people playing rated games at a particular moment.

TechCrunch reported that most new users were beginners and quoted Cheng saying around 85% of new registrations came from outside the United States. Those are claims reported in April 2025, not current audited audience data. The article pointed to product innovation, pandemic-era online entertainment, and the popularity of The Queen’s Gambit in 2020 as growth context; these are reported explanations, not quantified proof of what caused the increase.
