Chrome’s built-in Dino game received a temporary Olympic-themed update in July 2021. Players could open chrome://dino, run into an 8-bit Olympic torch, and be transported into one of several sports-themed experiences. The feature was tied to the Tokyo Olympic Games and should now be treated as a historical Easter egg, not a current Chrome feature.
How the Olympic version worked
The familiar endless runner remained at the center of the experience. The change was a themed surprise interaction: instead of jumping over every obstacle, players had to collide with an Olympic torch when it appeared.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Enter
chrome://dinoin the address bar and press Enter. - Start the Dino game with the Spacebar or its normal start control.
- Continue running until the Olympic torch appears.
- Do not jump over the torch. Run into it to trigger the Olympic-themed sequence.
The direct URL meant players could launch the game even while connected to the internet; disconnecting from the internet was not required for the reported method.

The five reported sports-themed settings
The July 23, 2021 report identified these settings:

The available coverage does not establish whether the settings appeared randomly, whether every event could be accessed in one run, or whether players could select a specific sport. It is therefore more accurate to describe them as reported sports-themed experiences than as a confirmed, selectable collection of five separate games.
When was it available?
Chrome Unboxed reported the feature on July 23, 2021, shortly before the Tokyo Olympic Games began. Those Games were held in 2021 after being postponed from 2020. The report presented the update as a limited-time Olympic celebration and encouraged readers to try it before it disappeared.

The source was secondary coverage based partly on a Reddit discovery, rather than a Google announcement or technical document. It also described the feature as appearing in Chrome and Chrome OS without providing a complete operating-system, device, browser-version, or release-channel compatibility matrix.

Does the Olympic Dino game still work?
There is no reliable evidence in the available report that the Olympic content became permanent. In 2026, chrome://dino may still open the standard Dino game, but that does not mean the Olympic torch or sports-themed sequences remain in current Chrome builds.

If the torch does not appear, the most likely explanations are that the 2021 promotion ended, the current browser build no longer contains its assets, or the original event depended on a temporary version or release condition. These possibilities are not documented as a precise removal mechanism, so the Olympic version should not be advertised as reproducible on modern installations.

“Overhaul” is a broad description for what was essentially a temporary themed makeover. The evidence supports an Olympic torch trigger and several sports-inspired sequences. It does not establish a permanent redesign, a new progression system, competitive leaderboards, or a full Olympic game collection.

The appeal was novelty: Chrome’s usually unchanged offline game briefly acknowledged a major international sporting event. It was a small seasonal Easter egg rather than a fundamental change to the Dino game.
