Chronicles of the Wolf is worth considering if you enjoy gothic atmosphere, exploratory worlds, and the slower, less-guided side of classic Metroidvania design. Critics praise its setting, music, and Castlevania lineage, but its cryptic progression and backtracking can make getting through it a test of patience. The same retro approach that gives the game its identity is also its main drawback.
What critics say about Chronicles of the Wolf
The sampled reviews are generally favorable, though they do not describe a game that will suit every player. Metacritic’s PS5 critic page listed a 78 Metascore from eight reviews when accessed in 2026: six positive, two mixed, and none negative. That score and count apply to the PS5 aggregation and may change as reviews are added or listings update. Metacritic’s critic page is an aggregation, not a substitute for each reviewer’s individual judgment.

The favorable responses tend to center on mood, exploration, soundtrack, and the game’s classic Castlevania-inspired feel. The reservations focus less on combat difficulty than on how the game communicates where to go: hints can be obscure, routes may require substantial backtracking, and movement can feel slow or clunky by modern standards.
What kind of game is it?
Developed by Migami Games and published by PQube, Chronicles of the Wolf is a gothic action-adventure Metroidvania. The story follows Mateo Lombardo, an apprentice of the Rose Cross Order, as he pursues the Beast of Gévaudan through an eighteenth-century French countryside. Nintendo Life describes the Beast as a werewolf-like version of a creature associated with real-life terror in rural France during the 1700s.

- Guest Star Bloodless: A thrilling cameo from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night adds a unique twist.
Its lineage is deliberately old-school: exploration and combat sit within a gothic setting, while new abilities—including a double jump, air dash, and feather boots—open up more of the world. That structure rewards players who enjoy revisiting earlier areas with new tools, but it also makes route-finding and remembering unresolved paths part of the experience.
Where the reviews find its strengths
Atmosphere, music, and worldbuilding
Reviewers frequently single out the game’s gothic mood and soundtrack. Its rural French setting and supernatural pursuit give exploration a distinct identity, while the classic Castlevania influence shapes the tone without making the game simply a retelling of that series.

Exploration and a substantial journey
Nintendo Life’s North American Switch review describes a lengthy adventure with a second section that makes up most of its roughly 20-hour runtime. That is reviewer Oliver Revolta’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time; pace and exploration habits will affect how long a playthrough takes. The review also notes five possible endings, giving completion-minded players reasons to pursue more than one outcome.
Combat that is challenging without being the main obstacle
Nintendo Life characterized the combat as well-balanced and “just challenging enough.” In that review, the more persistent patience test was progression—working out where to go and accepting the backtracking—rather than combat difficulty alone. Other critic opinions vary, but this distinction helps explain why the game can frustrate players who otherwise enjoy action-platforming.

What may frustrate players
Cryptic progression and backtracking
Some hints are easy to miss or interpret, and the game offers less navigational hand-holding than many recent Metroidvanias. Vandal’s review, as reproduced on Metacritic, praises the atmosphere, bosses, and exploration while criticizing early movement, backtracking, and the lack of map markers. If you prefer clear objectives and convenient ways to mark unfinished routes, this is the most important compatibility issue to weigh.
Movement and pacing
The old-school pacing is not just a matter of presentation. Movement may feel slow or clunky compared with more fluid modern action-platformers, especially while learning the early game. For players who enjoy deliberate traversal, that can support the game’s mood; for players who want quick movement and constant forward momentum, it can make exploration feel like friction.

Technical observations are review-specific
Nintendo Life reported two slowdown points and a flashing black menu screen during its review session on the North American Switch version. Those observations should not be read as verified, current defects across all platforms; the review does not establish whether they persist after updates or occur on other versions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Chronicles of the Wolf like Castlevania?
It draws clearly on classic Castlevania-style gothic action and exploration, so the comparison is useful for describing its lineage and mood. It is still its own game, built around Mateo’s pursuit of the Beast of Gévaudan and a Metroidvania structure in which abilities expand access to the world. The resemblance is likely to appeal most to players who want a retro-leaning take on gothic exploration, rather than those seeking the speed, guidance, or conveniences of newer genre entries.

- Consider it if you value gothic atmosphere, soundtrack, exploration, and a classic Castlevania-inspired tone.
- Approach with caution if unclear hints, repeated routes, or limited map guidance tend to sour an otherwise good adventure for you.
- Do not judge it only by difficulty. At least one reviewer found combat approachable; progression and navigation are more consistently identified as the patience test.
Critics captured the trade-off succinctly. Nintendo Life reviewer Oliver Revolta called it “a confident, old-school Metroidvania that asks a lot of its players.” Game Rant, in a June 30, 2025 statement reproduced by Metacritic, cautioned that it “is not for everybody. It’s not even for all Metroidvania fans.” Both are opinions, but together they convey the central point: the game’s retro demands are inseparable from its appeal.
Platforms and release
Metacritic lists an initial release date of June 19, 2025, and versions for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The 78 Metascore cited above is specifically the PS5 critic aggregation, while Nintendo Life’s review covers the North American Switch version. Review impressions can differ by platform and reviewer, so neither source establishes a universal technical picture.
