Start by checking the equipment and internet connection your church already has; add hardware only when the signal path requires it. This guide walks through a practical computer-and-OBS setup, a full rehearsal, and the separate copyright questions that worship music can raise.
What you need to livestream a church service
For a common computer-based setup, the camera feeds a capture device connected to a computer running OBS. The church sound mixer sends an appropriate stream mix to an audio interface, which connects to the computer. OBS combines the video and audio, then sends the stream to the selected platform.
This is one workable pattern, not a universal equipment list. Some cameras or mixers may connect differently, and connector, format, and computer compatibility depend on the equipment already installed. Inventory that equipment before buying anything.
- Camera: Identify its available video output and how it can connect to the streaming system.
- Sound mixer: Check whether it can provide a dedicated or otherwise suitable mix for online viewers.
- Computer and encoder: Confirm the computer can run the chosen streaming software and handle the intended scenes and sources.
- Capture hardware and audio interface: Use these when needed to get the camera and mixer signals into the computer; verify compatible inputs and outputs.
- Internet connection and destination: Check the actual upload connection and the intended platform’s current streaming requirements.
A one-camera service can be a sensible starting point. Extra camera angles, switching, or graphics add setup and operating work; use them when they solve a real need and the team can run them consistently.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to connect church video and sound
Connect the camera to the streaming computer
- Check the camera’s output and the computer’s available inputs. If the computer cannot accept the camera signal directly, choose a compatible capture card or other capture device.
- Connect and power the camera, then connect the capture device to the computer.
- In OBS, add the capture device as a video source and confirm that the expected camera image appears. Set framing and exposure on the camera as needed for the room.
Give the stream a suitable sound mix
- Ask the audio operator to provide a mix intended for the livestream. The sound heard in the room may not be balanced for viewers listening through phones, televisions, or headphones.
- Connect an appropriate mixer output to the streaming computer. One documented approach is to route a mixer sub-mix to an audio interface using XLR or quarter-inch cabling, but the correct connection depends on the mixer and interface.
- In OBS, select the intended audio input and check its meter while someone speaks and music plays. Listen to the stream or a test recording from the viewer side to confirm that speech and music are present and clean.
Keep the stream audio at a controlled level and watch for clipping or an unexpectedly quiet feed. Test the actual route from mixer to viewer; a signal showing on a mixer meter does not by itself confirm that OBS is receiving it.
Configure OBS and the YouTube stream
- Build the scene: In OBS, add the camera capture source and the correct audio input. Arrange the image and any titles or other graphics the service requires.
- Set the destination: Configure OBS for the intended streaming account and platform. If using a stream key, enter it through the platform’s current workflow and keep it private. Anyone with access to the key may be able to broadcast to that channel.
- Choose video and encoding settings: Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to values that the computer and tested upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate rather than relying on a universal threshold; its current recommendations can change, so consult the YouTube Live encoder settings guidance before settling on numeric values.
- Test a representative service: Include speech, music, and movement in the picture. YouTube Help advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check the result: Confirm that the stream reaches the intended destination, the image is framed correctly, all required sound is present, and speech stays synchronized with mouth movement. Monitor the platform’s stream-health information during the test.
There is no single upload-speed threshold or equipment budget that applies to every church setup. Test the computer, encoder, and real internet connection together; a generic cable or router purchase cannot guarantee a successful stream.

Rehearse before the service
Run the entire route before the congregation depends on it. A rehearsal can reveal a muted source, a wrong camera selection, a weak upload connection, or an audio delay while there is still time to correct it.
- Verify camera power, framing, focus, and the image in OBS.
- Check the stream mix at the viewer end, including speech and music, and listen for distortion, missing channels, or excessive room noise.
- Watch for lip-sync problems between the picture and sound; correct synchronization in the relevant equipment or software and test again.
- Confirm OBS is sending to the right channel and that the platform reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Check any planned recording and confirm where it will be saved or made available.
- Have the operator practice starting, monitoring, and ending the broadcast using the same equipment and scenes planned for the service.
Worship music, licenses, and YouTube copyright checks
Technical readiness does not establish music rights. Rights depend on the country, song, recording, platform, and intended use, including whether a recording or archive will be available afterward. Check the relevant rights and license terms for the church’s location and actual repertoire.

What the cited US CCLI licenses describe
The CCLI information here applies to the United States, not every country. CCLI describes its US Streaming License as extending the Church Copyright License to online worship using eligible songs performed live. Its US Streaming Plus License describes additional coverage for authorized master recordings and multitracks, subject to the applicable agreement. Confirm that each song’s publisher or catalog and planned use are covered, and read the governing terms: CCLI’s summary says the agreement controls if it conflicts with the summary. See CCLI’s US Streaming and Streaming Plus Licenses.
CCLI recommends including relevant license numbers in the stream description. That does not make a license a guarantee against platform enforcement. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a broadcast may be interrupted or terminated, and licensed material may require the rights holder to allowlist the channel in Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright. If a warning appears, follow the platform’s process and contact the relevant rights holder or licensing provider to check what applies.

Churches outside the US should use the licensing rules and guidance applicable to their territory. The Church of England also publishes guidance for streaming worship music in its own church context; it is not a substitute for local legal advice: Church of England music guidance.

- OBS on a computer: The documented setup path uses OBS, a camera capture device, and audio routed from the mixer. It can fit a church that already has a suitable computer and people familiar with the workflow.
- Dedicated encoder: Compare it with a computer-based setup based on the team’s familiarity, required inputs and scenes, and whether the existing computer can handle the workload. The available guidance does not establish one as universally better.
- One camera or several: Choose based on the views the service needs and whether operators can manage extra equipment consistently; more cameras are not a requirement for a valid starting setup.
- Hardware connections: Select a capture card or audio interface only after checking the camera, mixer, computer, connectors, and signal formats in the installed system.
- Streaming destination and music permissions: Consider where the congregation watches and the platform’s rules. Compare any music license by covered catalog, live versus recorded use, archive permissions, territory, reporting, and the governing agreement.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different use case—keeping uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than broadcasting a live camera feed—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is not a camera-based live-service encoder.
