What kind of game is Citizen Sleeper?
Released in 2022, Citizen Sleeper is a single-player narrative RPG developed by Jump Over The Age and published by Fellow Traveller. You play a “sleeper”: a digitised human consciousness in an artificial body owned by a corporation. Your character is trying to survive on Erlin’s Eye, a decaying space station populated by people and factions with their own needs and ambitions. The story explores precarity, personhood, corporate power, and the possibility of building a community.

Rather than funneling you through one mandatory quest, the game lets you decide which people and storylines to prioritize. You can pursue character-focused drives involving relationships, alliances, station secrets, or escape. The station’s problems and the people who live there give those choices their weight.
How do the dice, clocks, and drives work?
Each cycle, you assign dice to actions around the station. Clocks track progress or events, while drives organize character-focused stories you can choose to follow. Five skills—Engineer, Interface, Endure, Intuit, and Engage—develop through play. The result is a role-playing structure in which you weigh what to do with the opportunities available rather than simply following a fixed sequence of objectives.

This system is central to the experience, not a brief layer around a conventional action game. Its appeal is the tension between limited time, practical needs, and the relationships or mysteries you want to pursue. If you prefer a clear main quest and constant forward motion, the cycle-by-cycle structure may feel slow.
What do reviews say about Citizen Sleeper?
On the Metacritic page accessed in 2026, the PC release had an 82 Metascore from 19 critic reviews, classified as “Generally Favorable.” The same page showed a PC user score of 7.6 from 179 ratings. Those are separate, platform-specific snapshots, not a single combined rating, and totals can change. See the current Metacritic reviews.
Steam, accessed in 2026, displayed a “Very Positive” label based on 93% positive English-language reviews from 6,484 reviews. That large but changeable sample reflects Steam users who reviewed the game in English; it is not a guarantee that every player will respond the same way. Check the Steam listing and current reviews.

The praise centers on the writing, characters, and setting. The Guardian’s Lewis Packwood, in a line reproduced on Steam, called it “some of the finest video-game sci-fi writing out there.” Rob Gordon’s Screen Rant review, reproduced on Metacritic, praised its “deep and well-crafted narrative experience” and the questions it asks players to ponder. The favorable response is therefore most relevant to readers looking for a story-rich RPG, not evidence of action-game spectacle.

Softpedia’s review, summarized on Metacritic, praised the universe and choices but found the dice system slow and click-heavy, and argued that a more visual-novel-like approach might have suited the story better. RPGamer also described the early tabletop-style challenge as stressful, while praising later story interludes. The mechanics that make each decision feel consequential can also interrupt the flow for players who mainly want to read through a story.
Is Citizen Sleeper too text-heavy?
Reading is a major part of the game: its characters, science-fiction setting, and choices are delivered primarily through text rather than voiced action sequences. If you enjoy reading dialogue and following character arcs, that presentation is a core attraction. If you want continuous action, extensive voice performance, or minimal reading, the format is likely to be a poor fit.

The other consideration is pacing. You make decisions cycle by cycle, then follow the consequences through character stories and station events. That deliberate rhythm supports the game’s themes and systems, but it may feel like friction if you want quick progression or dislike assigning dice to individual actions.

Platform listings differ, so check the current store page for the system and region where you plan to play. Steam’s listing covers Windows and macOS. The official Citizen Sleeper site lists PC, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Game Pass; Metacritic also lists Xbox One, PS4, and Switch 2. These sources do not establish that every version is currently available in every region or through every storefront.

Steam describes FLUX, REFUGE, and PURGE as included post-launch episodes. It lists the soundtrack and artbook separately as related content. Because packaging and edition terms can vary, verify what your chosen store includes before buying rather than assuming the same bundle applies everywhere.

The official site also lists a premium artbook and a Citizen Sleeper solo tarot tabletop RPG. It describes Citizen Sleeper: Helion Rising as a separate tabletop RPG coming in 2027; that is not the 2022 video game. Availability and release timing can change, so consult the official site for current details.
Who should play it?
- Good fit: You want science-fiction world-building, carefully written characters, and choices about which relationships or stories to pursue.
- Good fit: You enjoy tabletop-inspired systems where dice, time, and resources shape how a role-playing story unfolds.
- Consider another game: You are seeking fast action, a conventional quest structure, or very little reading.
- Check before choosing: You are sensitive to slow-feeling interfaces or repeated, individual action selections; at least one critic specifically found the dice system click-heavy.
For a reader who values narrative and atmosphere over action, the reviews and the game’s design point in the same direction: Citizen Sleeper is worth considering. If its text load and measured decision-making sound more like chores than pleasures, favorable aggregate scores may not change that fit.
