City Spirit Go was a China-focused, location-based creature-collecting mobile game reported in 2016. It shared Pokémon GO’s broad loop of finding creatures and battling, but reports described it as map-based rather than using Pokémon GO’s camera-based augmented reality. It was not established as an official Pokémon product.
What was City Spirit Go?
City Spirit Go (城市精灵) was reported as a free-to-play mobile game associated with Shenzhen Tanyu. A 2016 FBIC Group report gives March 2016 as its release date and China as its available country; those details are claims reproduced in that report, not confirmations from a current developer source. How did its gameplay compare with Pokémon GO?
| Feature | City Spirit Go, as reported in 2016 | Pokémon GO, as described in those reports |
|---|---|---|
| Finding creatures | Players used GPS or a virtual map to search for creatures. | Location-based play. |
| Collection and battles | Players captured creatures and battled with other players’ creatures. | Creature collection and battles. |
| Camera-based augmented reality | Reports said it did not use camera AR. | Used a camera overlay to place Pokémon in the player’s surroundings. |
| Timing and geography | A report placed its release in March 2016 and listed China as its available country. FBIC Group report | The Los Angeles Times said Pokémon GO’s global rollout began in July 2016; the article also referred to an earlier Japan-only beta. Los Angeles Times |
The similarity was the general idea of exploring to find collectible creatures, then battling. The reported difference was how the game presented that activity: a virtual map, not Pokémon GO’s camera-based AR. Los Angeles Times EFE Tecno report republished by La Prensa detikInet

Was City Spirit Go really “China’s Pokémon GO”?
That phrase works as shorthand for the gameplay resemblance reported at the time, not as a literal description of the game’s identity. City Spirit Go was not established as a Chinese-language edition of Pokémon GO, an authorized Nintendo or The Pokémon Company product, or a game featuring officially licensed Pokémon. A 2016 report noted an icon resembling Pikachu, but resemblance alone does not show that it was licensed. 2016 report noting the icon
Some contemporary coverage called City Spirit Go a copycat. That is a characterization used by reports, not a legal finding established by the sources cited here. The Los Angeles Times also reproduced a warning attributed to Pokémon GO’s official Facebook account: “Unofficial versions of ‘Pokemon Go’ downloaded from third-party websites may contain malware or viruses.” It was a warning about unofficial downloads in the 2016 context, not evidence that City Spirit Go itself contained malware. What did reports say about its popularity?
Contemporary stories described strong interest, but their figures are historical claims rather than current or independently audited audience statistics.
- The 2016 FBIC Group report repeated a claim of 1 million daily users and described City Spirit Go as the most frequently downloaded app in mainland China. The same PDF includes an App Store China chart screenshot dated August 1, 2016 that places the game at #84; the screenshot is a different measure and moment from the broader download claim. - The Los Angeles Times described City Spirit Go as the top iOS download in China’s app store. It attributed a claim that the operators increased server count tenfold over three days to gaming website 86 Games. Los Angeles Times
What did it cost to play?
EFE Tecno, in an article republished by La Prensa on July 19, 2016, reported that in-app purchases could reach 648 yuan, then approximately US$95. That was the reported maximum purchase amount at the time, not a typical player’s spend or a current price. EFE Tecno report republished by La Prensa
