If Civilization VI started crashing after you bought or enabled the New Frontier Pass, first check where the crash occurs and whether the Pass’s content is installed on the account and storefront you are using. The timing does not prove the Pass itself is defective: a download, game update, entitlement refresh, mod conflict, graphics setting, or a particular save can cause the same symptoms. Work through the checks below from least disruptive to most involved, and back up saves before changing user files or reinstalling.
First, identify the failure point
Note your platform and storefront, then identify the earliest point where the game fails. That narrows the likely cause and avoids treating missing DLC as a crash.
- Game will not launch or crashes before the main menu: start with a restart, mods and overlays, graphics settings, drivers, and file verification.
- Main menu opens, but a new game crashes while loading: test without mods, check DLC installation and cache, and try DirectX 11 on Steam for Windows.
- Only one existing save crashes: test a new game and an earlier autosave before changing the installation.
- The game works, but Pass content is absent: investigate account ownership, add-on installation, and content detection; that may be an entitlement or installation issue rather than a crash.
- Only modded games or custom maps crash: disable all mods and test a new, unmodded game.
- A console displays a black screen after a crash: use the console-specific checks below. Do not delete save data as a routine step.
Before troubleshooting, make a backup of important local saves if you can. The Civilization VI user-data folder can also contain logs, configuration, custom maps, and mod data; avoid deleting the whole folder.
14 fixes, from safest to most involved
1. Restart the game, launcher, and device
Fully quit Civilization VI. Exit Steam or Epic rather than leaving it running in the background, reopen the storefront, and restart your PC or console. Launch the game again. This is a sensible first check after a purchase because it gives the storefront and game another chance to refresh their state.

2. Confirm the purchase is on the account and storefront you are using
Check that the account currently running the game is the one that owns the Pass, and that the base game and DLC are being used through the same storefront. Steam and Epic purchases are separate entitlements; ownership on one generally does not grant ownership on the other. On a console, check the purchasing PlayStation Network, Xbox, or Nintendo account. If the transaction is pending or the purchase is not visible in that account’s order history or library, resolve that with the storefront before reinstalling.
3. Check that the Pass content has finished installing
The Pass includes individual content packs and game modes, so do not assume that seeing the bundle as owned means every component has completed downloading.
- Steam on Windows or Mac: open Library, right-click Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, select Properties, then DLC. Check that the relevant items are enabled and that no download or update is pending.
- Epic or console: open the game’s add-on or content-management screen—often labelled Manage, Manage Game Content, or Manage Game and Add-ons—and check that the individual packs are installed. Exact labels can vary with storefront and system updates.
- If an installation appears stuck or incomplete, restart the storefront or console and allow the download to finish before testing. If the storefront offers a way to disable and re-enable a pack, you can use that to prompt a redownload.
Then open Additional Content in Civilization VI and check whether the expected packs are listed. If the Pass appears owned but its content does not, continue with the entitlement and cache checks rather than assuming the game is crashing because of the Pass.
4. Verify the game files
A damaged or incomplete game file can cause launch and loading failures. On Steam, go to Library, right-click Civilization VI, select Properties → Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. On Epic, open the game’s Manage menu and choose Verify; the wording may change. Let the check finish, restart the storefront, and test again. 2K includes file verification among its Steam troubleshooting steps.

5. Disable every mod for a clean test
Disable or unsubscribe from Workshop and third-party mods, then restart the storefront and start a new single-player game without mods. If that works, re-enable mods one at a time to find a conflict. A game update or newly available DLC can expose a compatibility problem even if the mod appeared to work before. Disabling a visible mod is a useful test, but it does not prove that leftover files or a damaged mod database are gone. 2K notes that user-created mods are not tested for compatibility and may break after patches in its Steam troubleshooting guidance.
6. Reset the mod/DLC detection cache when appropriate
For the Epic version, Epic documents deleting Mods.sqlite as a fix for DLC that does not appear after upgrading to certain editions. This is a cache-reset procedure for a particular DLC-visibility problem, not a universal crash cure. Back up the user-data folder first.
- Close Civilization VI.
- Open
C:Users<username>DocumentsMy GamesSid Meier's Civilization VI (Epic). - Delete only
Mods.sqlite, not the entire folder or save files. - Start the game and check Additional Content.
See Epic’s instructions for missing Civilization VI DLC. This path is for Epic on Windows; do not use it as a Windows instruction for Mac or console players.
7. Try DirectX 11 on Steam for Windows
On Steam, select the DirectX 11 launch option when prompted and, if offered, choose to always use that option. This is a compatibility test, not a guarantee or a claim that DirectX 11 is better on every PC. If DirectX 11 works while DirectX 12 does not, investigate graphics-driver, overlay, or configuration compatibility. This advice is for PC only; DirectX settings do not apply to Mac or consoles.

The old advice to repair or bypass the 2K Launcher is out of date for the normal Steam launch flow: 2K says it removed that launcher from Civilization VI on Steam and describes the current launch choices in its launcher sunset announcement. That announcement also states that the Epic version launches the DirectX 11 version.
8. Update the graphics driver and restart Windows
On a Windows PC, install a current graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—and restart the computer before testing. Do not rely only on Device Manager’s message that a driver is up to date. A driver or graphics-API problem is one possible cause, not proof that the Pass is faulty. 2K’s PC troubleshooting guidance covers driver updates and restarting as crash checks.
9. Temporarily disable overlays and conflicting background tools
As a controlled test, turn off Steam, Epic, Discord, and GPU overlays, along with recording or streaming utilities, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, RGB or hardware-monitoring tools, and other programs that hook into games. Trainers, memory editors, debuggers, or similar utilities can also interfere. If you temporarily test whether security software’s game-protection feature is involved, restore normal protection afterward; do not leave antivirus disabled. Civilization Support discusses third-party tools and background-process conflicts in this PC crash guidance.
10. Disconnect controllers and nonessential USB devices
On PC, unplug controllers and unnecessary USB peripherals, then try launching the game. If it launches, reconnect devices one at a time to identify a conflict. This is a targeted test, not a reason to replace working hardware; 2K lists controller testing in its Steam troubleshooting steps.

- DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game.

11. Check Windows folder permissions
If the game cannot write configuration or save files, permissions may be involved. Make sure the Documents folder is writable and check whether Windows Security’s Controlled Folder Access is blocking the game. Try launching the storefront normally first; only test running the launcher or game as administrator if there is reason to suspect a permissions problem. Do not make permanent administrator launches a default fix. Civilization Support explains how Documents-folder permissions can prevent save creation in this Windows save-creation troubleshooting post.
12. Test a new game separately from the affected save
With mods disabled, start a new single-player game. If it loads, try an earlier autosave or backup of the affected game without overwriting your only copy. If new games also crash, focus on the installation, DLC detection, drivers, configuration, or hardware. If only one save fails, the problem may be specific to that save or to mods it used; the purchase may simply have happened around the same time.
13. Check storage, hardware, and platform support
Confirm that the device has free storage for the game, updates, and temporary files, and that it meets the requirements for your platform and storefront. Published requirements are not interchangeable across platforms or storefronts: the 2K Store’s New Frontier Pass page lists PC requirements, while the Steam listing provides its own storefront information and requirements. Check the current page for the edition and device you use rather than treating one PC specification as universal. Steam’s client-support notices are also separate from Civilization VI’s game requirements; the Steam listing notes changes to supported operating systems, so check its current client information if you use an older OS.
14. Reinstall the DLC or game only after the safer checks
A reinstall can replace incomplete or corrupted files, but it is not guaranteed to resolve every crash. Before uninstalling, back up local saves, confirm cloud saves have synchronized, and preserve custom maps or important configuration files. Then uninstall through the storefront, restart the device, reinstall the base game and Pass content, and test an unmodded game before restoring custom content. 2K includes reinstalling among later PC troubleshooting options in its general PC guide. On consoles, use the platform’s cache and content-management procedures where available; do not delete saves as a routine part of reinstalling.

Platform-specific checks
Steam on Windows
Check Library → right-click Civilization VI → Properties → DLC for installed Pass items, then verify files under Installed Files. Test without mods and try DirectX 11 if the game offers the launch choice. The normal Steam launch flow no longer uses the 2K Launcher, according to 2K’s launcher announcement.
Epic Games Store on Windows
Check the game’s add-on management and verify the installation. If DLC is missing in-game, Epic’s documented Mods.sqlite procedure above may help with the specific detection issue it addresses. Epic states that Civilization VI launches its DirectX 11 version in 2K’s launcher announcement.
Steam on macOS
Check Steam’s DLC list and download status, disable mods, verify the game files, and check that the installed Mac build and operating-system version are supported by the current storefront. Do not use Windows file paths or DirectX instructions on a Mac.
PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch
Use the console’s own game-content manager to confirm that the Pass packs are installed on the account that owns them. Restart the console, check for game updates and adequate storage, then follow the platform’s cache procedure if needed. 2K’s console troubleshooting guide covers DLC installation, updates, storage, and cache checks. Menu names and license controls differ by console and may change with system updates.
For a PlayStation black screen, follow the less destructive recovery checks first. Civilization Support warns that deleting local and cloud saves permanently removes current progress and should be a last resort in its PlayStation black-screen guidance. Do not apply that save-deletion step to other platforms or use it as a routine fix.
When the Pass is missing rather than causing a crash
If the game remains playable but expected leaders, civilizations, scenarios, or modes are absent, check ownership and installation before pursuing crash fixes. Open Additional Content and confirm the relevant items appear. A bundle or edition may grant individual DLC entitlements rather than displaying a single bundle name, and the New Frontier Pass is distinct from the Leader Pass. For Epic, consult the official guidance on Leader Pass ownership combinations before concluding that a separate entitlement is missing. If the purchase is not recognized by the storefront account, contact that storefront; if it is recognized but the game does not detect the content after installation and cache checks, contact Civilization Support.
If the crash continues, prepare a useful support request
Record the platform and storefront, operating-system version, GPU and driver version for PC, the exact point of failure, whether a new game works, and whether the game was tested without mods. Include a screenshot of the DLC or add-on status and the exact error message, if any. On PC, Civilization VI’s file-location guide identifies logs and AppOptions files that can help support diagnose the issue; 2K’s PC troubleshooting guide also references DxDiag and MSInfo for escalation. Avoid sending save files or account details unless support requests them through its official channel. Submit a ticket at Civilization Support.
