Start with the symptom and your PC’s compatibility
Note whether the problem began after a game update, occurs only with one save, or happens before the game opens. That timing helps narrow down which steps to try first. Compare your PC’s actual processor, graphics card, memory, Windows version, DirectX support, and free storage with the official Civilization VII PC requirements, updated May 26, 2026.
The listed Windows tiers describe performance targets, not a guarantee that the game will launch or run reliably on every PC that meets them. The figures below apply to Windows 10/11 64-bit; they do not cover the separately listed Mac and Linux requirements.

If you are unsure whether your hardware meets the requirements, the official PC compatibility checker accepts a DxDiag file and says it processes the file locally in your browser. Its results are educational suggestions based on minimum requirements and public benchmark data; exceptions are possible. In a February 2025 support response about launch reports, 2K said the CPU was the most common minimum-spec issue among the reports it had received at that time. That historical observation is not a diagnosis of a current PC or a measure of today’s cases.

If the problem started after an update, restart and remove mods
A patch can make previously working mods incompatible. Civilization Support’s troubleshooting guide, updated May 26, 2026, recommends restarting Steam fully—not simply minimizing it—and restarting the PC if needed. Check for current graphics drivers as well.
- Exit Civilization VII and choose Steam’s exit option so the client is fully closed.
- Restart Steam, then try launching the game. If it still fails, reboot the PC and try again.
- Disable or remove mods and test the game again. For Steam Workshop subscriptions, use Unsubscribe from All to remove subscribed mods fully.
- If the game opens but a particular save appears to trigger the issue, try starting a new game as a diagnostic comparison.
Verify the Civilization VII installation in Steam
File verification checks the installed game files and replaces errors Steam finds. Use this when a crash or launch failure persists after restarting, or when you suspect an update or installation did not complete correctly.

- Right-click Sid Meier’s Civilization VII and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, then try launching the game again.
These menu labels follow 2K’s Steam troubleshooting instructions. If your Steam interface labels differ, look for the game’s installed-file verification option in its Properties.
Try the game-specific cache steps for a crash or failure to load
Civilization Support recommends deleting LegalDocument.cache from the game’s Local AppData folder, then relaunching and verifying the files. This is a support-recommended workaround, not a promise that every crash will be fixed.

LegalDocument.cache. - Relaunch Civilization VII. If the issue remains, verify the game files in Steam using the steps above.
If the issue appears related to lingering mod or cache data, the same official guide recommends trying Mods.sqlite in that folder next. If that does not help, close the game and clear the entire local Civilization VII folder. The guide says this removes background cache and lingering mod data without deleting save data. Follow the official instructions carefully and avoid removing other similarly named folders.
Isolate driver, software, and controller conflicts
Outdated graphics drivers can affect stability, compatibility, or launch. Check the current driver source for your GPU maker—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Do not rely on old driver version thresholds in support articles as though they were still the latest releases.

2K’s PC troubleshooting guidance also identifies overlays, VPNs, security software, and connected controllers as possible complications. Change one thing at a time and retry the game so you can tell whether it affects the symptom.
- Temporarily close overlays, VPNs, and nonessential background programs, then retry.
- If antivirus or firewall software may have blocked the game, check its alerts and follow the vendor’s or game support’s guidance. Do not leave security protection disabled; add an exception only when the relevant support guidance indicates the game was blocked.
- Unplug controllers and try launching. If that changes the result, reconnect devices one at a time or test another controller.
- If the launcher offers a DirectX/Vulkan choice, test the alternative as a diagnostic step for launch, graphics, or performance problems.
Use the Code of Conduct redirect workaround only for that specific symptom
A separate 2K notice, published February 10 and updated February 11, 2025, addressed players whose game crashed at launch or after a few minutes and redirected them to the 2K Code of Conduct. For that reported issue, the notice advises updating drivers and restarting the PC. It also names memory editors, cheat tools or trainers, network traffic analyzers, debuggers, and Steam emulators as possible causes. If none of those tools are present, it records ending NahimicSvc64 in Task Manager as one discovered workaround. This old, symptom-specific suggestion is not a routine first step for every crash.

Contact support if the problem continues
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, send Civilization Support a ticket with your PC’s system information and a record of what you tried. 2K’s PC troubleshooting guidance identifies DxDiag and MSinfo as useful diagnostic information for investigating the hardware and software environment. Include when the failure began, whether it followed a patch, and whether it affects every save or only one; those details help describe the problem without assuming its cause.
