Steam lists Denuvo Anti-tamper for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII on PC, along with a limit of five machine activations within 24 hours. That does not, by itself, establish that the game requires a continuous internet connection. Steam says a 2K account is not required for offline play, while 2K documents specific features that are unavailable or limited offline.
What the PC listing says about Denuvo
Steam’s current Civilization VII store listing names Denuvo Anti-tamper and states that the game has a limit of five machine activations within 24 hours. This is the concrete restriction the listing specifies; it is not the same as saying the game must remain online whenever you play.
The five-activation rule concerns machine activations over a 24-hour period. Steam’s listing does not describe it as a daily play-time allowance, nor does it say that a player must reconnect continuously during a session. The exact-title headline appears to have been associated with Denuvo in a secondary reference, but the original Game Rant article was not available to confirm its full framing.
Can you play Civilization VII offline?
Steam says a 2K account is not required for offline play. 2K’s support article, published and updated February 10, 2025, clarifies that offline play does not include every feature. The distinction is between playing offline and using connected services.

Keep the DRM issue separate from the Ages controversy
The headline’s likely PC controversy is Denuvo, but Civilization VII has also faced a separate debate over its design. At launch, 2K described an Ages system in which players choose a new civilization to represent their empire in each Age. That gameplay change is not the same thing as the game’s PC copy protection.

In a May 6, 2026 report, PC Gamer quoted Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick describing the Ages approach as “a bridge too far, from the consumer’s perspective.” The report said Firaxis was preparing an option to return to a more classic structure. This is a separate design response, not a change to the Denuvo activation terms listed by Steam.

2K announced that Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K, became available worldwide on February 11, 2025. The PC release was available through Steam and the Epic Games Store; 2K’s launch announcement also lists console and Mac/Linux availability via Steam. Its statement that the Civilization franchise had sold more than 73 million copies worldwide refers to the franchise overall, not to Civilization VII sales.
