IGN’s “The Final Preview,” published March 3, 2025, is an enthusiastic but provisional look at Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, based on Will Borger’s two playthroughs of a three-and-a-half-hour demo. It highlights a grim countdown premise, exploration that mixes linear routes with optional discoveries, and turn-based combat built around timed reactions. The finished game later launched on April 24, 2025.
What is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 about?
The story begins with a recurring catastrophe: the Paintress paints a number, and people of that age die. The people of Lumière send expeditions to the Continent in an effort to stop her. The official game overview frames the goal as destroying the Paintress so she can never paint death again. The preview presents this hook without revealing later plot developments.

Sandfall Interactive describes the game as its first title: a single-player, narrative-driven, turn-based RPG that blends fantasy with Belle Époque influences. Its publisher announced an April 24, 2025 release.
What did IGN’s final preview cover?
Will Borger’s IGN preview was published March 3, 2025, before release. He says he played the demo twice, for three and a half hours in total. Its observations are hands-on impressions of that demo, not a verdict on every part of the finished game.

Borger’s response was strongly positive: he came away eager to continue, while leaving open whether the full game would “stick the landing.” That makes the piece useful as a snapshot of the game’s promise before launch, rather than a substitute for a review of the released game.
How does exploration work?
In the demo, Borger found the environments fairly linear, but not devoid of detours. He describes branching paths, hidden grapple points, platforming, secrets, and optional fights, alongside a world map that connects destinations. Together, those details suggest a guided route with opportunities to look around and take on extra challenges—not proof that every area in the complete game follows the same layout.

How does combat work?
Combat is turn-based, but the preview emphasizes that enemy attacks can demand real-time responses. Players can dodge, parry, or jump when attacks come in, adding timing and reaction to the usual turn-by-turn planning.
Reacting to enemy attacks
Borger describes parrying as more demanding than dodging, with the potential payoff of counterattacks and AP. The need to read an attack and time a response gives defensive turns an active role rather than leaving the player to wait after choosing a command.

- Immersive World: Explore a visually stunning alien planet with breathtaking details and treacherous terrain.
Planning your own turns
On offense, the preview calls attention to managing AP, choosing skills and items, using character-specific abilities, and considering turn order. Those decisions combine resource management with the timing required during enemy turns; the piece does not reduce combat to simply selecting a menu option and watching the result.
Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 open world?
The preview does not establish that the game is open world. Its account of the demo describes fairly linear environments, branching routes and secrets, plus a world map linking destinations. That is the extent of what this hands-on session supports; it should not be generalized into a claim about every location in the full game.
