Classic Medieval RPGs Compared: Which One Should You Play First?

Choose your first classic medieval RPG by the experience you want: party-based D&D, dialogue-rich fantasy, an older complete edition, or open-world exploration.

For a first classic medieval RPG, start with Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition if you want a guided, party-based Dungeons & Dragons adventure. Choose Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition if dialogue and unusual fantasy ideas matter more than a conventional quest, or The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall if you want a sprawling first-person world to explore. Ultima VII: The Complete Edition is another older fantasy-RPG entry, but the available official listing offers less detail for judging how it will suit a new player.

Choose by the experience you want

Game Best starting fit What the official source establishes
Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition A guided, party-based D&D fantasy adventure Beamdog describes the original as a classic D&D computer role-playing saga and dates the Enhanced Edition to 2012. Beamdog’s game page.
Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition Dialogue, writing, and fantasy that turns familiar tropes around Beamdog emphasizes the game’s writing and its inversion of familiar RPG and fantasy conventions. Beamdog’s game page.
Ultima VII: The Complete Edition An older fantasy RPG presented as a complete edition EA’s listing identifies it as an RPG and presents it as a complete edition; it does not establish detailed modern compatibility or mechanics. EA’s listing.
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall First-person exploration in a large world Bethesda describes its 1996 release as a massive explorable 3D world; Steam currently lists it as a free-to-play single-player RPG. Bethesda’s game page and Steam listing.

These are different kinds of starting points, not four interchangeable versions of the same adventure. Pick for the play style you want; the official descriptions do not provide a reliable, like-for-like comparison of modern usability or accessibility.

Why start with Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition?

If you want the clearest introduction here to a party-based D&D fantasy saga, this is the most direct match. Beamdog says it released the Enhanced Edition in 2012. The publisher describes its broader approach to Enhanced Editions as bringing classic RPGs into a contemporary era with new functionality, content, and accessibility across platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android; that statement appears on its Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition page.

That is a publisher’s description of its work, not a guarantee that every platform offers the same experience or that the game will feel modern to every player. The available sources do not settle detailed questions about its combat, difficulty, or accessibility options. Choose it for the party-and-D&D framing, rather than assuming it is the easiest of the four.

#1 Best Overall
Lords of the Fallen Standard Edition - Xbox Series X
  • Overhauled Character Creator – Create more lifelike characters with improved facial detail, body shapes, and visual fidelity
  • Shared-Progression Cross-Play Cooperative Play – Both players now save all main story progress as long as they’re on the same “New Game” and have defeated a similar number of main bosses within one. Both players retains all loot, 100 percent vigor, and can revive each other in all online sessions.
  • Free Friend’s Pass – Invite any friend to join your adventure in online co-op even if they don’t own the game. Friends keep loot and character progress, plus get full offline access to the tutorial and character creator
  • Revamped Combat and Movement – V2.0 adds smoother animations, better weapon response, refined lock-on, improved evasions, and new grievous strike prompts

Choose Planescape: Torment for writing and unusual fantasy

Pick Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition when the appeal is dialogue, writing, and a fantasy setting that challenges familiar RPG expectations. Beamdog itself foregrounds those qualities, making this the strongest fit among these options for a reader whose priority is narrative rather than a conventional adventure structure.

The cited official description supports that broad identity, but does not establish a like-for-like measure of how much reading it contains or how its systems compare with the other games. Treat “best for writing” as a match to the publisher’s stated emphasis, not a claim that every player will prefer its story.

Choose Daggerfall for first-person exploration

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is the pick for someone drawn to a large, explorable world viewed in first person. Bethesda describes the game’s 1996 release as a massive 3D world, and Steam currently lists it as free-to-play and single-player. The Steam listing establishes its listed price category, not what a player will find in every region or storefront over time.

The sources confirm the exploration focus but do not compare its interface, accessibility, or present-day ease of use with the Enhanced Editions. If older controls and systems are a concern, the available evidence is not enough to promise a smoother start than the other games.

Where Ultima VII fits

Ultima VII: The Complete Edition is a reasonable candidate if you specifically want an older fantasy RPG and are considering the edition EA presents as complete. The official listing confirms the RPG classification and edition name, but does not provide enough detail here to judge modern compatibility, mechanics, or whether it is a better first game than the others.
