1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you mean the original System Shock, start with System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster for another hostile-spacecraft FPS/RPG, choose the System Shock remake to revisit Citadel Station with modernized presentation, or pick Mass Effect Legendary Edition for a very different, character-led sci-fi RPG. The best fit depends on whether you want exploration and hacking, flexible problem-solving, survival-horror atmosphere, or a cinematic story shaped by decisions.
Which classic sci-fi game should you play next?
The phrase “like this one” can point to different parts of System Shock, so there is no single closest match for every player. Use this quick guide to choose by the experience you want:
- Another classic FPS/RPG in a dangerous starship: System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster.
- The original game’s station exploration and design, with a modernized presentation: System Shock (remake).
- A sweeping sci-fi RPG focused on characters and decisions carried across games: Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster
Choose this if you want to stay close to the first-person sci-fi horror and RPG side of System Shock. Atari describes the original System Shock 2 as a 1999 PC release; the remaster returns to a starship setting aboard the Von Braun and updates its presentation. It is the most direct choice here for classic first-person sci-fi atmosphere.
Atari lists physical editions for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, and describes cross-play co-op for up to four players. Check the platform and edition at the time you buy, since storefront details and availability can change. Atari’s product page

System Shock (remake)
Pick the remake if what you want is the original’s station-bound exploration, hacking and problem-solving, rather than a different series. Atari describes it as a modernized remake of the 1994 game, with audio logs, nonlinear levels and multiple ways to approach problems. PlayStation’s feature highlights exploring Citadel Station, hacking and its retro-future design. Atari’s remake page · PlayStation’s feature on the remake

Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Choose this when “sci-fi like System Shock” means an engaging science-fiction role-playing game, not a first-person immersive sim. Mass Effect Legendary Edition bundles remastered versions of the single-player base content from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, plus more than 40 DLC. EA says the trilogy is optimized for 4K Ultra HD and that choices carry from one game to the next. Its focus is a galaxy-spanning story and its characters, rather than station exploration and hacking. EA’s Legendary Edition overview

System Shock is often associated with immersive sims: experiences that combine ideas from several genres and let players interact with a world in consequential, flexible ways. In a PlayStation feature, Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick describes the original as a pioneer of the genre. The same feature quotes BioShock creator Ken Levine on the influence of its audio logs, tools and portrayal of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. Those qualities help explain why a follow-up could mean either another first-person systems-driven game or a story-rich sci-fi RPG, even though the two offer different kinds of play.
