For one pre-encoded stream sent only to YouTube, an FFmpeg process on a VPS can have the lowest direct monthly bill—if the server has enough compute and its region includes adequate outbound traffic. A hosted service costs more in some cases but may bundle continuous playback, scheduling, storage, production tools, or support. To compare total cost, count bandwidth, extras, backup and maintenance, and your own time—not just the advertised monthly price.
What counts as the total cost?
Set the same job for both options before comparing them: one YouTube destination or several, continuous or scheduled hours, resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, and whether you need recording, playlists, overlays, or production tools. Then compare cash cost and operator time separately. The figures below are reference prices checked October 4, 2026; availability, taxes, billing terms, regions, and features vary.
- Cash: subscription or server charge, bandwidth overage, address charges, storage, backups, redundancy, and applicable taxes.
- Work: setup, updates, monitoring, troubleshooting, and restoring a failed stream.
- Risk: what a missed restart or prolonged outage would cost you, and whether you need a backup system.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
At a constant bitrate, a 30-day month contains 2,592,000 seconds. Using YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates and decimal terabytes, estimated outbound video data is bitrate in Mbps × 2,592,000 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000:
| YouTube H.264 profile | Recommended bitrate | Estimated data sent in 30 uninterrupted days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | About 2.59 TB |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | About 4.54 TB |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | About 5.51 TB |
These are calculations from YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not published usage figures. They assume continuous sending at the stated bitrate; protocol overhead and other traffic are excluded. Add audio if it is not included in the bitrate you use, reconnects, management traffic, and any other outputs. Providers may count TB and TiB differently, so confirm how the exact plan measures traffic.

YouTube’s official encoder settings guidance recommends CBR, RTMP or RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). It lists 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 1080p60; recommended AV1/H.265 values are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps for those profiles. The guidance applies whether a VPS or a hosted encoder sends the stream. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for different viewer devices and networks.
What do the current example prices include?
These are not like-for-like quotes. A VPS, a production-oriented multistreaming plan, a prerecorded-video service, and a managed encoding API do different jobs.

Is an FFmpeg VPS cheaper than a streaming service?
It can be cheaper in direct cash outlay for a single pre-encoded feed, but only after confirming egress, compute, and the work you will take on. For example, the listed Hetzner CPX12’s 20 TB traffic allowance is above the estimated video-only 1080p30 usage of about 4.54 TB in 30 uninterrupted days. That does not establish that the VPS is suitable: source encoding, CPU behavior, traffic terms, region, address charges, storage, taxes, and recovery all matter. The same allowance should not be assumed for other plans or regions.
A hosted subscription may cost more but can include the parts you would otherwise build or buy separately. Restream’s channel counts and production features suit workflows involving multiple destinations or production needs; Gyre’s listed plans explicitly support 24/7 prerecorded playback, with playlist and scheduler availability depending on tier. Compare only features you will use, and check current plan details before purchasing.

What do you need to run a 24/7 YouTube stream on a VPS?
At minimum, you need a Linux server sized for the actual media workflow, a stable source file or feed, enough outbound traffic for the target bitrate, an enabled YouTube live channel, and a way to restart and monitor the streaming process. A pre-encoded source that can be passed through requires less compute than transcoding; do not assume a small VPS can encode any input at the desired resolution and frame rate.
Check YouTube readiness
YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Create or select the event in YouTube Studio, obtain its stream key, and configure the encoder to send to YouTube over RTMPS when supported. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, logs, and shared screenshots. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and test with audio and motion similar to the real stream while monitoring stream health.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says 2160p/4K does not have the low-latency option and is optimized for quality at normal latency. At 4K, account for higher bitrate and egress rather than carrying over a 1080p estimate.
Account for archives and channel access
Restream’s YouTube support page, dated July 9, 2026, says the channel must have live streaming enabled and the connected account must own the channel; manager or editor access is not enough for the connection described there. It also says YouTube has no stream-duration limit but archives only streams shorter than 12 hours. That archive limit is distinct from whether a live transmission continues. See Restream’s YouTube streaming guidance.
Keep the content eligible
Use material you own or are licensed to broadcast, including music and visuals. A valid stream key and stable encoder do not grant content rights or guarantee that YouTube will leave a broadcast available. Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and channel monetization policies for rules relevant to your content and monetization; reused-content eligibility is separate from the technical ability to stream.
How to decide without guessing at a break-even point
- Fix the output profile. Write down destinations, hours, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and whether you need playlists, recording, overlays, or scheduling.
- Calculate egress. Use bitrate × seconds streamed ÷ 8, then convert bytes to the provider’s billing units. Add overhead and any other outputs, and verify the exact region’s included traffic and overage terms.
- Price the whole hosted tier. Check the required number of streams, resolution, storage, duration, billing commitment, and production tools—not just the entry price.
- Price the whole VPS setup. Include compute, address, disk, bandwidth, backup or failover, tax, and any extra services needed for monitoring and recovery.
- Value your operating time. Estimate monthly hours for setup, updates, monitoring, and incident response, then value them at your own rate. No universal break-even exists without those assumptions.
- Choose for the failure you can tolerate. If an outage matters commercially, account for redundancy or a second service rather than comparing a managed service with one unbacked server.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an uploaded-video YouTube stream, StreamNeo’s workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops the upload from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start your free StreamNeo day.
