Square Enix describes it as the massive blade famously wielded by Cloud in Final Fantasy VII, and it points readers to Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion for the sword’s origins. The name and its link to Cloud are firmly documented. The official material does not give a full ownership timeline, so this article does not reconstruct one.
What the Buster Sword is
The Buster Sword is the oversized weapon that has become the visual signature of Cloud Strife. Square Enix’s own article on the sword calls it “famously wielded by Cloud Strife in FINAL FANTASY VII” (Square Enix, December 13, 2022). Because the blade is so large relative to Cloud’s frame, it is also the item Square Enix most often shows him carrying in its merchandise, which is covered below.
Where the sword comes from: the Crisis Core connection
Square Enix says Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion answers questions about the sword’s origins and how it came into Cloud’s possession. The same official article describes Crisis Core as a prequel starring Zack Fair, a young SOLDIER operative (Square Enix, December 13, 2022). That is enough to tell a reader where the backstory is told. It is not enough to narrate it.
What the official sources support
- The sword’s origins and its arrival in Cloud’s possession are covered in Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion, according to Square Enix.
- Crisis Core is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII centered on Zack Fair.
What the sources do not establish
- Who held the blade before Cloud, and in what order the ownership changed hands.
- When exactly Cloud received it.
- Any narrative detail beyond the pointer to the game itself.
Product descriptions do not fill these gaps. For the specifics, the game’s own story is the primary source, and readers should treat any chronology that comes from a product page or a secondhand summary with caution.

Why the oversized design stands out
The reading below is editorial interpretation, not a statement from Square Enix or any designer. The sword’s broad blade, strong silhouette, and size relative to Cloud’s body make it easy to identify at a glance, even in a crowded scene or a small thumbnail. Those features also explain why it works so well on collectibles: the shape reads clearly at any scale.
The official sources do not include a named designer explaining why the original weapon was made so large, or what its size is meant to symbolize. Any account of intent would be speculation. The sources also contain no sales figures, polls, or rankings, so this article does not claim the sword’s popularity rank or cultural impact.

The one sculptor quotation in the Square Enix feature is about something else. Sculptor Simon O’Rourke, describing his own tree sculpture rather than the in-game weapon, said the blade patterning has an “almost ‘circuit board’ feel” with diagonal lines curving into uprights (Square Enix, December 13, 2022). It is useful as a comparison of how the sword’s surface has been interpreted artistically, but it is not a design explanation.

Choosing between them
- Build-and-display: the Structure Arts kit suits a buyer who wants to assemble the figure. Square Enix’s listing says, “The included Buster Sword can be stowed on Cloud’s back, or held in his hands.”
- Finished miniature: the Static Arts figure is the option with no assembly and a height stated with its base.
- Large display piece: the Masterline statue is a premium item. The product page warns against glass shelves or display cases because of its weight and notes that specifications may change.
None of these is a full-size sword replica. The Structure Arts kit is a compact build, and the Masterline statue is a display figure, not a weapon.
