Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutecnbp_280.dll is a Canon printer-driver component, not a normal Windows system file. When Windows reports that cnbp_280.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Canon printer software that originally installed it rather than downloading the DLL separately.
The exact Canon printer model associated with this filename is not publicly verified. Independent file catalogs identify it as part of Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software from CANON INC. One catalogued copy is reported as 32-bit, version 0.3.1536.1, and approximately 57.5 KB, but those details are catalog claims rather than confirmation from a current Canon installer.
Before you start
Write down:
- The exact Canon printer model
- Whether the error appears while printing, opening printer properties, or starting Windows
- Whether the printer was recently removed, updated, or reinstalled
- Whether the message says only that the file is missing or also names another DLL
Do not copy cnbp_280.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The correct location belongs to the Canon driver package, and “specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency is missing even when the named file is present.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution.
1. Find the printer model
Check the label on the printer, its original packaging, or the printer listed in Windows.

- Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10. Select the Canon printer and note its model.
Do not choose a similar model from memory. Canon packages are model-specific.
2. Download the official package
Open the Canon Support website manually and search for the exact printer model. Select your Windows version and download the printer driver or complete setup package.
Choose the package that matches your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but the installer still needs to support the operating system and printer. Do not select a package merely because a catalog describes cnbp_280.dll as 32-bit.
3. Remove damaged Canon software
Before uninstalling, disconnect the printer if the Canon installer asks you to do so.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Remove the Canon printer software associated with the affected model.
- Restart Windows.
If several Canon printers are installed, review each entry carefully. Removing a shared Canon component can affect another printer.
4. Install the replacement package
- Open the downloaded Canon installer.
- If necessary, right-click the setup file and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Allow it to install the driver and supporting software.
- Connect or turn on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
Some Canon packages contain separate 32-bit and 64-bit driver folders and use Setup.exe to begin installation. Use the setup program supplied by Canon rather than manually moving individual files.

5. Check the result
Print a test page:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
The repair worked if the test page prints and the original cnbp_280.dll message no longer appears.
If the error remains, continue with Fix 2. A stale printer entry, an incomplete uninstall, or a missing dependency may still be calling the old driver.
Fix 2: Remove the old printer entry and driver package
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
A partially removed Canon installation can leave Windows trying to load a file that no longer exists.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the current Canon package from the manufacturer.
If Windows continues to show the old driver:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Canon driver package in the Drivers tab.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Restart the computer.
- Run the Canon installer again.
Remove only the package belonging to the affected printer. If another Canon printer uses the same driver, removing it may disrupt that device.

If manually identifying several old drivers is tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the problem, while driver installation and repair are handled by the full version. For this specific DLL, however, the model-specific Canon installer remains the definitive source.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If antivirus software removed the file, reinstalling Canon is safer than restoring a loose DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that mentions
cnbp_280.dllor Canon printer software. - Check the original file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:
- It came from a verified Canon installer.
- The printer model matches the installed package.
- The file was not downloaded from a DLL repository.
- A current security scan does not identify a broader infection.
If the source is unclear, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the Canon driver from Canon Support. A file with the correct name is not automatically genuine.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use DISM and System File Checker when several Windows components are malfunctioning, Windows updates are damaged, or unrelated system files also produce errors. These tools are not the primary way to restore a Canon driver DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the command to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete.
Success means SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, or that it found no integrity violations, and the broader Windows symptoms stop. If cnbp_280.dll is still missing afterward, reinstall the Canon driver again. SFC does not normally supply third-party Canon driver files.
If repeatedly running SFC and DISM is difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing system issues before repair; the free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon package that owns this DLL.
Fix 5: Check the application or startup item calling the file
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The message may appear after the printer was removed because a Canon utility or stale startup entry still launches.

You can also check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the message appeared.
- Record the executable named in the event.
If the event names a Canon executable, repair or remove that Canon installation. If it names an unrelated program, that program may be loading the DLL incorrectly or retaining an obsolete printer integration.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a failed update
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
If the problem began immediately after a Windows update or driver update, and reinstalling Canon did not help, System Restore may return system settings and installed programs to an earlier restore point. It normally does not remove personal files.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
Afterward, install the correct Canon driver again if Windows removed or reverted it.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general command for replacing missing files or repairing printer drivers.
Running this command is usually not appropriate:
regsvr32 cnbp_280.dll
If the DLL does not support registration, Windows will report an error. Even if registration succeeds, it will not restore a missing dependency or repair an incomplete Canon installation. Use the Canon installer instead.

- FAST PRINT SPEEDS: Print approximately 7.7 (black) / 4 (color) images per minute.
- EASY SETUP: Get running in just a few minutes thanks to a streamlined and easy setup process out of the box.
- EASY TO INSTALL INK: Print full color with only 2 (no mess) easy-to-replace ink cartridges.
- 1.5” LCD SCREEN: Get the job done with an intuitive and easy to use 1.5” segment LCD screen.
- Malware disguised as a familiar filename
- A file for the wrong printer package
- A mismatched architecture
- An old or altered version
- A file with missing dependencies
It also leaves the damaged Canon installation unresolved. The safe source is the official Canon support page for the exact printer model. Windows repair tools should come from Microsoft and should be used for Windows corruption, not as a substitute for a Canon driver package.
Likely causes
| Cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Damaged or incomplete Canon driver | Remove and reinstall the model-specific Canon package |
| Stale printer entry | Remove the printer and old driver package, then reinstall |
| Wrong driver architecture or model | Download the package selected for the exact printer and Windows system type |
| Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection history and verify the installer source |
| Missing dependency | Reinstall the complete Canon package instead of copying one DLL |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Recent update problem | Reinstall Canon, then consider System Restore |
A Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package is not normally the answer because cnbp_280.dll is identified as a Canon driver component. Consider VC++ only when the complete error also names files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, and select the architecture required by the application.

FAQ
Is cnbp_280.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software.
Which Canon printer uses this DLL?
The exact model cannot currently be verified from public Canon documentation. Identify the printer installed on the affected computer and use that model’s Canon support page.
Is the file genuine?
The filename has a consistent Canon printer-driver identity across independent catalogs, but that does not prove that every copy is genuine. Check its origin, file path, installer, and security status.
Is cnbp_280.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The catalogued version is reported as 32-bit. That does not establish that every Canon package using the filename has the same architecture. Follow the architecture and model selected by the official installer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I place it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Do not choose a Windows folder based only on the filename. Let the Canon installer place the driver components where they belong.
What if the message says “specified module could not be found”?
The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstall the complete Canon driver package rather than copying only cnbp_280.dll.
What if none of these steps works?
Record the exact error, the printer model, Windows architecture, executable named in Event Viewer, and the Canon installer version. Then contact Canon Support. If multiple unrelated applications fail, investigate Windows corruption or malware separately.
