cnhi06a.dll is a Canon WIA scanner image-processing filter, so a missing-file error usually means the Canon scanner driver package is damaged, incomplete, removed, or no longer compatible. The safest fix is to identify the Canon device, reinstall its exact scanner or WIA driver package, and avoid downloading the DLL by itself.
What this file actually does
Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, lets scanning applications communicate with scanners and multifunction printers. Microsoft documents that image-processing filters are vendor DLLs installed with scanner drivers and loaded during image transfer.
Public file records identify cnhi06a.dll as “WIA Scanner Driver Image Enhancement dll”, associated with CANON INC. It is a hardware-driver component, not a general Windows library, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or game component.
Older Windows driver inventories place the file in Canon WIA packages such as wiaca00c.inf, wiaca00d.inf, wiaca00e.inf, and wiaca00f.inf, commonly under locations such as:

Those records are historical and do not establish that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 Canon package contains the same filename. Public records also disagree about historical file size and architecture, so do not use an old version number or file size as a universal replacement specification.
The error can appear when a WIA client starts or transfers an image. Possible clients include Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, Paint, Photoshop, Canon ScanGear, MF Toolbox, or other imaging software. The exact program that triggers this filename depends on the installed Canon package and the application using it.
Commonly indexed messages include:
- “The program can’t start because cnhi06a.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting cnhi06a.dll.”
- “Error loading cnhi06a.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnhi06a.dll was not found.”
- “cnhi06a.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon scanner driver
This is the most likely and most reliable repair. The correct package may be called a Canon scanner driver, ScanGear package, MF scanner driver, or ISIS/TWAIN/WIA driver depending on the device.
- Find the model printed on the scanner or multifunction printer. Do not rely only on a shortened Windows device name.
- Open Canon’s official Software & Drivers support page.
- Select the exact product model.
- Select your Windows version and system architecture when Canon presents those choices.
- Download the driver package intended for that model.
- Close scanning applications.
- Run the Canon installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Follow the connection instructions. Some scanners must be connected by USB only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open the scanning application and perform a test scan.
A successful repair normally means the application opens without the cnhi06a.dll message and the scanner completes a preview or scan. If the installer says the operating system is unsupported, do not force an unrelated package. Check whether Canon provides a driver for your Windows version or whether the device is a legacy model.
If the device is still listed but the installation repeatedly fails, remove it before reinstalling:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon device.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific Canon driver.
- Return to Printers & scanners and select Add device if Windows does not detect it automatically.
For a deeper removal:
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers.
- Right-click the Canon device and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers to remove driver software, select that option only when you are deliberately cleaning the old Canon package.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the driver downloaded for the exact Canon model.
Microsoft explains that restarting after uninstalling a device can allow Windows to reinstall a driver. If Windows does not restore the device, use the manufacturer’s driver rather than choosing a random DLL.
Manually comparing dozens of driver packages and guessing which one is stale is time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan to show driver problems, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the exact Canon package remains the safest choice when available.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows blocked the file
If the error appeared after antivirus activity, check whether a trusted Canon driver file was quarantined.

- Review entries matching
cnhi06a.dll, Canon, or the scanner driver. - Open the entry and inspect its path and detection details.
Restore a file only when all of the following are true:
Rank #2
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
- It came from the official Canon installer or a legitimate Windows driver package.
- The path belongs to the installed driver rather than a temporary download or user profile.
- The Canon device and software are expected on this computer.
- A current security scan does not identify the package as unsafe.
If the file came from an unknown download, an email attachment, an AppData folder, or an unfamiliar application directory, do not restore it. Run a full Windows Security scan and reinstall the driver from Canon instead.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless the file is explicitly allowed. Do not create an exclusion merely to suppress a missing-DLL message.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when the Canon driver is legitimate but Windows may have damaged system components, especially after an interrupted update, failed servicing operation, or system cleanup.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not insist on it.
Then repair the component store:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon scanner again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC on supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart and retest. If it finds corruption but cannot repair everything, run DISM again after confirming that Windows Update works, then repeat SFC.
Repeating repair commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported system problems, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the correct Canon driver.
Fix 4: Check architecture and compatibility
A 32-bit Canon filter can be legitimate, but the driver package must match both the scanner and the Windows environment. Historical public records for cnhi06a.dll conflict about architecture and size, so do not copy a file based on an old database entry.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Then return to Canon’s product support page and select the package for that operating system and device. Do not place a 32-bit DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 as an architecture workaround. Do not place a 64-bit file into an application directory either.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Windows says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” the cause may be a wrong-version file, wrong architecture, a corrupt driver package, or a dependency failure. Reinstall the complete package instead of replacing only cnhi06a.dll.
Fix 5: Remove stale Canon software and driver entries
If the message appears during sign-in but you no longer use a Canon scanner, an obsolete startup entry or device registration may be requesting the filter.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Canon scanning software, ScanGear, MF Toolbox, or software belonging to the retired device.
- Select the relevant entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and remove the unused Canon device.
- Check Device Manager for remaining Canon entries under Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers.
If the error affects only one Windows account, sign in with another account and test the scanner. A working second account suggests a per-user configuration problem. Remove obsolete Canon software and reinstall the current package for the affected account. This specific per-user cause is possible, but the filename alone does not prove it.
To inspect third-party driver packages from an elevated Command Prompt, run:
pnputil /enum-drivers | findstr /i "Canon WIA wiaca"
This can reveal Canon-related packages in the driver store. Do not delete a package merely because its name contains Canon. Removing the wrong driver can disable another Canon device. Microsoft documents PnPUtil as the supported tool for enumerating and managing driver-store packages.
Fix 6: Roll back a recent driver change
If the error began immediately after a Canon or Windows driver update:
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers.
- Double-click the Canon device.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Confirm the reason and restart Windows.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, uninstall the device, restart, and install the previous compatible Canon package if Canon provides one. You can also use System Restore when the problem clearly follows a recent system change:
- Press Win + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without changing personal files. It is not a substitute for backing up important work.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
WIA image-processing filters are installed through the scanner driver’s INF configuration, which copies files and creates the required driver and registry settings. They are not automatically repaired by registering a DLL manually.
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnhi06a.dll
unless Canon’s exact installation instructions specifically require it. If regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that does not prove the file is missing or corrupt. Copying the file into an application directory, System32, or SysWOW64 can also create version and architecture conflicts.

Windows Features is not the normal repair location for this file. There is no general Windows feature that should be enabled to replace a Canon WIA filter.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A loose DLL may contain malware, belong to the wrong Canon package, use the wrong architecture, or lack a dependency that the original driver installer would have supplied. Even a file with the right name may not match the scanner, Windows version, or driver registration.
Use the official Canon support page for the exact model, or allow Windows to obtain a compatible device driver through its normal device-installation process. If Windows component corruption is suspected, use Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions rather than replacing a system file manually.
FAQ
Is cnhi06a.dll a Windows system DLL?
Canon supplies the component as part of a WIA scanner driver. Older Windows installations could include it inside inbox WIA driver packages, but it should not be treated as a general-purpose Windows library.
Which Canon model uses this file?
No authoritative public source maps cnhi06a.dll to one specific current Canon scanner model. Identify the device on the computer and install the driver selected for that exact model.
Should I download cnhi06a.dll separately?
No. Repair the complete Canon scanner or WIA driver package. A standalone file often fails because the driver’s INF registration, dependencies, or other files are also missing.
