Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallcnhl9601.dll is a Canon scanner component associated with the CanoScan LiDE 700F, not a normal Windows system DLL. If Windows reports that cnhl9601.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or was not found, the safest fix is to remove the damaged Canon scanner installation and reinstall the correct official driver package.
A third-party file-analysis record identifies the file as a 32-bit PE DLL, version 1.0.2.0, with Canon and CanoScan LiDE 700F metadata. That metadata is useful for identification, but it is not a Canon file manifest. Canon’s own driver package is the important part to restore.

1. Reinstall the Canon LiDE 700F driver
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged cnhl9601.dll. Do not start by copying the DLL into a Windows folder. Reinstalling the complete scanner package restores the file together with its related drivers, dependencies, and registration.
Canon lists separate packages for Windows architecture:
#1 Best Overall
- Stay organized: Easily covert your paper documents into digital formats (searchable PDF, JPG, and more) or scan directly to the cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, QuickBooks Online, Evernote, SharePoint, and more)
- Space saving design: Upright, with top feed and top eject, and a built-in cable organization system
- Reliably handles many different document types: Receipts, photos, business cards, plastic or embossed cards, reports, contracts, long documents, thick or thin documents, and more
- Fast and efficient: Scans both sides of a document at the same time, in color, at up to 25 pages-per-minute, with a 30 sheet automatic feeder, and one-touch operation
- Broad compatibility: Supports Windows and Mac; TWAIN driver also included
- 64-bit Windows:
sd64-win-lide700f-14_0_8a-ea24.exe - 32-bit Windows:
sd86-win-lide700f-14_0_8a-ea24.exe - Driver version:
14.0.8a
Canon lists this driver for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10, with separate 32-bit and 64-bit support. Windows 11 is not listed as officially supported.
Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type under Device specifications.
- Note whether it says 64-bit operating system or 32-bit operating system.
On Windows 10, the path is Settings > System > About.
Use the sd64 package on 64-bit Windows and the sd86 package on 32-bit Windows. Do not choose based only on the DLL name or on the fact that the reported DLL itself is 32-bit. The scanner application can also matter: an older 32-bit TWAIN application may need a 32-bit scanning component even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Remove the existing Canon installation
- Disconnect or power off the scanner.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, select Installed apps. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Search for Canon, CanoScan, or LiDE 700F.
- Select the Canon scanner software and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and remove any remaining CanoScan LiDE 700F or Canon scanner entries.
- Restart Windows.
If the Canon software is not listed, continue with the driver download and installation. A partially removed installation can still leave the application unable to load cnhl9601.dll.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install the correct package
- Go to Canon’s official support area.
- Search for CanoScan LiDE 700F.
- Select the Windows package matching your system architecture.
- Download the appropriate self-extracting EXE.
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.
- Allow the EXE to extract and start the Canon setup program.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Reconnect or power on the scanner.
- Open the application that previously reported the DLL error.
The installation worked if the error no longer appears and the scanner is visible to the scanning application. If the installer refuses to run on Windows 11, right-click it, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, choose a supported older Windows version, and try the installer again. This is a workaround, not a guarantee of Windows 11 compatibility.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through driver packages and checking which device drivers are stale; its free scan identifies issues, while repair and driver installation require the full version. For this file, reinstalling the Canon LiDE 700F package remains the definitive fix.
2. Check the scanner in Device Manager
A failed or incomplete driver installation may leave the scanner with a warning icon.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon scanner or an entry with a yellow warning triangle.
- Double-click the entry.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and check the provider and driver details.
If the scanner has a warning icon, right-click it and select Uninstall device. If Windows offers to remove the driver software, select that option only when you intend to reinstall the Canon package immediately afterward. Restart Windows, then run the official Canon installer again.
If the scanner does not appear at all, check its USB cable, connect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub, and confirm that it is powered on. Then repeat the Canon installation.
3. Confirm the scanning application’s architecture
A 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch can produce errors that look like a missing DLL.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
The Canon LiDE 700F package is a TWAIN-compatible scanner driver. The application using it must be able to communicate with the installed scanner interface. A 32-bit TWAIN application may not see a scanner through a 64-bit-only path, even on 64-bit Windows.
Check the application’s documentation or Help > About screen for its architecture. If the application is an older 32-bit program, test the scanner with another supported scanning application. Do not install a random copy of cnhl9601.dll to resolve an architecture mismatch.
If Windows Scan can use the scanner but an older application cannot:
- Confirm that the Canon driver is installed.
- Check whether the older application expects TWAIN.
- Look for a scanner-source or TWAIN selection menu inside that application.
- Install a current supported scanning application if the old program cannot use the available interface.
- Contact the application vendor if it specifically requires a 32-bit TWAIN source.
Windows does not provide every TWAIN data source as part of the operating system. A scanner working in Windows Scan does not prove that every older TWAIN application is compatible.
4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have quarantined a Canon component, especially after a driver update or incomplete installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cnhl9601.dll, Canon, or the scanner installation. - Review the file location and detection details.
Do not restore the file automatically. If its origin is uncertain, remove it and reinstall the scanner package from Canon instead. Restore or allow a quarantined file only when you can verify that it came from the legitimate Canon installer and is safe.
Afterward, run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If the file is quarantined again after a clean Canon installation, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
5. Repair Windows components only when other system files are failing
cnhl9601.dll is not a Windows-protected system file, so System File Checker is not normally the primary repair. Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader problems, such as several unrelated system errors, damaged built-in applications, failed updates, or general component corruption.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is expected to download a third-party Canon DLL or rebuild the complete LiDE 700F driver.

- Preserve detailed photos and images thanks to 4800 x 4800 dpi resolution, and with image enhancements, such as color restore and dust removal, Your photos will continue to look great.
- Enjoy ease of use with 'EZ' Buttons. With auto scan mode, the Scanner automatically detects what you are scanning; built-in PDF buttons, scan and save multi-page pdf's that are editable and searchable
- Paper size: 8.27 x 11.69, 8.50 x 11.69
Outbyte PC Repair can make broader Windows repair easier by showing detected problems instead of requiring repeated SFC and DISM runs without knowing what changed; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon software.

Do not assume that an SFC result proves the Canon installation is fixed.
6. Check Windows Update and compatibility
Canon’s published LiDE 700F support does not include Windows 11. The driver may work on some Windows 11 systems, but operation is not guaranteed and can depend on driver signing, the application architecture, and whether the application uses TWAIN or WIA.
To check for current Windows updates:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
For an older scanning application:
- Right-click its shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Follow the recommended tests.
- Test the application after each change.
If the Canon installer still will not work on Windows 11, use the last Canon package available for the LiDE 700F, try compatibility settings, or use a supported scanning application. A newer computer may require a newer scanner or a vendor-supported driver when the old package cannot operate reliably.
7. Use Windows’ scanner setup
Windows can sometimes detect the scanner after the Canon package is installed.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Follow the prompts.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner.
- Wait for detection and follow the prompts.
This does not replace the Canon TWAIN package. It only helps Windows discover and expose the device. If the scanner appears in Windows but the original application still reports cnhl9601.dll, investigate the application’s TWAIN compatibility and architecture.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL separately
Avoid random DLL download sites. A replacement may be malware-modified, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or a different build that does not match the rest of the Canon installation. It may also leave missing dependencies untouched.
The safe source is Canon’s official CanoScan LiDE 700F driver package. The installer is designed to restore the related files together.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely because the filename matches. Those folders serve different purposes on 64-bit Windows, and manual copying can make troubleshooting harder.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the self-registration functions used by certain OLE or ActiveX components. Canon documents the LiDE 700F download as a scanner driver, not as a DLL that users should manually register.

- STAY ORGANIZED – Easily convert your paper documents into digital formats like searchable PDF files, JPEGs, and more.Power Consumption : 2.5W or less (Energy Saving Mode: 0.7W). Suggested Daily Volume : 500 scans..Does it contain liquid: no
- CONVENIENT AND PORTABLE –lightweight and small in size, you can take the scanner anywhere from home offices, classrooms, remote offices, and anywhere in between
- HANDLES VARIOUS MEDIA TYPES – Digitize receipts, business cards, plastic or embossed cards, reports, legal documents, and more
- FAST AND EFFICIENT – No technical hurdles or complicated setups here; easily scan both sides of a document at the same time, in color or black-and-white, at up to 12 pages-per-minute, and with a 20 sheet automatic feeder
- BROAD COMPATIBILITY – Works with both Windows and Mac devices, be it laptop or computer
Running this command is therefore not a normal fix:
regsvr32 cnhl9601.dll
If Windows says the module cannot be found even though the file exists, the message may refer to a missing dependency, an architecture mismatch, or an incomplete driver installation. Reinstall the package and investigate the application rather than repeatedly registering the file.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without evidence
There is no verified evidence that cnhl9601.dll belongs to any of those Microsoft runtimes. Installing them will not normally restore a Canon scanner component.

Is cnhl9601.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F software and driver. It is not normally a Windows system DLL.
Is it a Microsoft Visual C++ file?
There is no evidence that it belongs to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Reinstall the Canon scanner package first.
Why did the error appear after upgrading Windows?
Canon warns that a scanner driver may need to be reinstalled after a Windows upgrade. The upgrade can leave an older driver incomplete or unusable.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean the named DLL is absent, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. The error does not prove that replacing only cnhl9601.dll will solve the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould I use the 32-bit package on 64-bit Windows?
Normally, use the 64-bit Canon package on 64-bit Windows. However, an older 32-bit scanning application may require a 32-bit TWAIN component. Check both the Windows architecture and the application’s architecture.
What if the scanner works in Windows Scan but not in my old program?
The old program may require TWAIN while Windows is using another scanner interface. Confirm the application’s TWAIN support and architecture, then test with a supported scanning application.
When should I use System Restore?
Use System Restore if the scanner worked recently, a suitable restore point exists, and reinstalling the Canon package did not help. Press Windows + R, type rstrui.exe, press Enter, choose a restore point, and review affected programs before confirming.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and build, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, the scanning application’s architecture, the Canon package used, the Device Manager status, and whether the error appears at startup or only when scanning.
