Before changing anything, record:
- Which program shows the message: Canon scanning software, ScanGear, MP Navigator, Photoshop, Windows Scan, or another TWAIN/WIA application.
- When it appears: at Windows sign-in, when launching software, or only after clicking Scan.
- Your scanner model: the strongest known association is the Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F.
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings → System → About and check System type.
- Whether the file was quarantined: inspect Windows Security protection history or your installed antivirus.
- Whether the scanner appears in Device Manager: its presence does not prove that the scanning driver is working.
Do not begin by downloading cnhlx700.dll from a DLL archive. The correct repair is to restore the complete Canon driver and application package that originally installed the file.
What cnhlx700.dll is
cnhlx700.dll is an application DLL associated in public file metadata with Canon software named LLD. Its exact internal function is not documented in an authoritative Canon file manifest, and it is not established as a normal Windows component.
The most credible product connection is Canon scanner software, particularly software used with the CanoScan LiDE 700F. Canon’s product documentation identifies that device as a USB flatbed scanner, while its support material treats the model as retired. This means a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation may not have a current driver designed for the scanner.

The file should therefore be treated as belonging to the program that installed it. It should not be copied into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another application directory just because an error message names it.
Public file records disagree about the file’s architecture, size, version, hash, and location. Do not rely on those records to decide whether your copy should be 32-bit or 64-bit. Verify the architecture of the Canon software and use the installer intended for your exact scanner model.
Fix 1: Identify the owning Canon software
First determine which application is requesting the DLL.
Check the error source
- Reproduce the error.
- Write down the complete message.
- Note the program title in the error dialog.
- If the error appears after clicking Scan, identify the application you used for scanning.
- If it appears when launching Photoshop or another editor, check whether that program is loading a Canon TWAIN source.
- If it appears during Windows sign-in, inspect recently installed Canon software and startup entries.
A message saying that cnhlx700.dll is missing does not prove that the DLL itself is the only problem. A dependent Canon DLL may be missing, or the installed copy may be incompatible with the program calling it.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Canon, ScanGear, CanoScan, MP Navigator, or software matching your scanner.
- Open the program’s three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options if available.
- Try Repair, then Reset if Repair does not help.
- Restart Windows and test the scanner.
Not every older Canon program provides Repair or Reset. If those choices are absent, continue with a complete removal and reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete Canon scanner package
This is the most likely working fix when the message appears during scanning or when Canon software starts.
For the CanoScan LiDE 700F, Canon’s regional support material identifies a Windows package named sd64-win-lide700f-14_0_8a-ea24.exe. Canon describes it as a self-extracting Windows installer. Because the product is retired, do not assume that its older driver is guaranteed to work on every current Windows release.
Remove the damaged installation
- Disconnect the scanner’s USB cable.
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall the relevant Canon scanner software.
- Restart Windows.
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon scanner or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it.
- Confirm the removal and restart Windows again.
Only remove the device and driver that belong to the affected scanner. Do not uninstall unrelated cameras, printers, or USB controllers.

Install from Canon
- Go to Canon’s official support site.
- Search for your exact scanner model.
- Select your Windows version and architecture when Canon provides those choices.
- Download the complete driver package, not an individual DLL.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the extraction and installation prompts.
- Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup finishes.
- Test with Windows Scan, Canon’s application, or the original TWAIN/WIA program.
If the installer refuses to run, right-click it, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and test a suitable older Windows compatibility mode. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee of support.

When manually locating an exact driver, the difficult part is matching the scanner model, Windows architecture, and legacy package without mixing files from another Canon device. Check whether the reinstall worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The original application opens without the DLL error.
- The scanner appears without a warning icon in Device Manager.
- Windows Scan can detect the device.
- A test scan completes.
- The Canon application no longer asks for
cnhlx700.dll.
If the file returns after reinstalling but is immediately removed again, continue to the antivirus section instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed the DLL, particularly if the Canon installation was already incomplete or the file was restored from an old backup.

Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the Canon installation directory or
cnhlx700.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its path.
- Restore the file only if it is inside a legitimate Canon installation and the installer came from Canon.
- Run a full security scan.
- Reinstall the complete Canon package afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to accept a DLL downloaded from an untrusted source. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, keep it quarantined until you verify the installer and investigate the security product’s detection.
If the error began after installing unrelated software, review Settings → Apps → Installed apps and Task Manager → Startup apps, then run a malware scan. A new application may have altered a scanner path or removed an old Canon component.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit in-process components. A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL into its own process. This remains true even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Check the application architecture where the vendor documents it. For many older scanning workflows, the important combination is:

- A Canon driver or scanning utility installed for the correct Windows architecture.
- A scanner package that matches the exact hardware model.
Do not infer the architecture of cnhlx700.dll from its filename or from a third-party file page. Public records conflict on that detail.
If Photoshop or another editor fails but Windows Scan works, the scanner hardware and basic Windows layer may be functional. The problem may be the editor’s TWAIN plug-in, its bitness, or the Canon component it loads. Test the scanner in a separate application and reinstall the Canon software required by the failing application.
If the scanner does not work anywhere, focus on the Canon driver and Device Manager rather than on the editor.

Fix 5: Check Device Manager and Windows scanning services
A scanner can appear in Device Manager while its TWAIN or WIA layer is broken.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the Canon device and choose Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- If the device has a warning icon, uninstall it and reinstall the matching Canon package.
- Try a different USB port and reconnect the scanner directly, without a hub.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners and check whether Windows lists the scanner.
You can also verify the Windows Image Acquisition service:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic if it is disabled.
- Select Start if the service is stopped.
- Select Apply → OK and test again.
Do not expect enabling an unrelated Windows Feature to recreate a Canon DLL. Windows Fax and Scan or Windows Scan can help test the WIA layer, but neither replaces a missing Canon driver.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are secondary repairs for Windows corruption. They are appropriate when multiple Windows features are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or protected system files are reporting errors. They are not the primary fix for a missing Canon application DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the scanner again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither command downloads cnhlx700.dll, and neither substitutes for reinstalling the Canon package.
Repeating these commands without knowing what changed makes the repair process harder to track. For this file, reinstalling the Canon scanner software remains the definitive fix.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, do not manually replace files in protected Windows folders. Review the CBS log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Do not use regsvr32 as a default fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A driver-support or application DLL may not provide that entry point.
Running a command such as:
regsvr32 cnhlx700.dll
may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found. That does not prove the DLL is missing, and registering it will not repair a damaged Canon installation.
Use regsvr32 only when Canon or the application vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact file. There is no verified basis for treating cnhlx700.dll as a self-registering Windows component.

When System Restore is appropriate
System Restore is reasonable when:
- The scanner worked before a clearly identifiable driver or software change.
- A restore point from before that change exists.
- Reinstalling the Canon package did not restore operation.
To check:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Choose a different restore point if offered.
- Select a point created before the scanner stopped working.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore only after confirming the point is appropriate.
System Restore is not a substitute for identifying the scanner model. A clean Windows reinstall is disproportionate until you have confirmed the Canon driver, application dependency, and Windows compatibility.
If the Canon scanner is retired
Canon marks the CanoScan LiDE 700F as retired, so a current Windows 11 driver may not be available or guaranteed. If the official package installs but scanning still fails:
- Confirm that the device appears in Device Manager.
- Test Windows Scan and the Canon application separately.
- Try the driver on a supported older Windows environment if one is available.
- Test with an alternate scanning application that supports the scanner’s WIA or TWAIN interface.
- Consider replacement hardware if the scanner cannot operate reliably on the current Windows version.
Do not mix a driver from another Canon model into the installation. A similar product name does not mean that its DLLs, TWAIN source, or USB driver are interchangeable.

Is cnhlx700.dll a Windows system file?
There is no reliable evidence that it ships as a general Windows component. It is associated with Canon application or scanner software and should be repaired through the program that installed it.
Should I download cnhlx700.dll by itself?
No. A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible version. It can also hide the actual problem, such as a missing dependent DLL or broken TWAIN/WIA installation.
Does the file belong to the CanoScan LiDE 700F?
That is the strongest public product association, but Canon’s public pages do not explicitly publish a file manifest proving that this exact DLL belongs to the LiDE 700F package. Use Canon’s model-specific installer rather than copying the file manually.
Why does Photoshop show the error when Windows Scan works?
Photoshop may be loading a separate TWAIN component or a 32-bit scanner plug-in. Check the editor’s architecture and reinstall the Canon software required by that scanning interface.
Should I copy the DLL to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The correct location is determined by the Canon installer and the application that loads it. Manual copying can create version conflicts and does not repair the driver registration or TWAIN/WIA layer.
What if reinstalling Canon does not help?
Check antivirus quarantine, Device Manager, WIA, application architecture, and the scanner’s retired-product compatibility. If the error began after a specific driver change, try System Restore. If only one Windows profile is affected, test a new user profile before reinstalling Windows.
