Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute“cnhw830.dll was not found.” “The program can’t start because CNHW830.DLL was not found.” cnhw830.dll errors usually point to a damaged, removed, or incomplete Canon printer or scanner driver rather than a missing Windows component.
The 60-second answer
cnhw830.dll is associated with the Canon Inkjet WIA Driver, a Canon component used by Windows imaging software for compatible printers and multifunction devices. WIA, or Windows Image Acquisition, is the Windows driver model that lets applications communicate with scanners and related imaging hardware.
The safest repair is:
- Identify the Canon printer or scanner that installed the file.
- Uninstall its existing Canon software if it is damaged.
- Download the exact driver package from Canon’s official support page.
- Reinstall it, restart Windows, and test printing or scanning.
Do not download cnhw830.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it into System32. A loose file can have the wrong architecture, version, dependencies, or malicious contents, and it may not repair the underlying Canon installation.
What cnhw830.dll is and is not
Public file records identify CNHW830.DLL as part of the Canon Inkjet WIA Driver, developed by CANON INC. It is a hardware-driver component for Canon imaging software, not a standard Windows DLL.
#1 Best Overall
- Stay organized: Easily covert your paper documents into digital formats (searchable PDF, JPG, and more) or scan directly to the cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, QuickBooks Online, Evernote, SharePoint, and more)
- Space saving design: Upright, with top feed and top eject, and a built-in cable organization system
- Reliably handles many different document types: Receipts, photos, business cards, plastic or embossed cards, reports, contracts, long documents, thick or thin documents, and more
- Fast and efficient: Scans both sides of a document at the same time, in color, at up to 25 pages-per-minute, with a 30 sheet automatic feeder, and one-touch operation
- Broad compatibility: Supports Windows and Mac; TWAIN driver also included
It is also not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. The exact version, size, architecture, and supported Canon model should be taken from the installed driver package or Canon’s model-specific installer rather than from a DLL catalog.
The file may be loaded when you:
- Open a Canon scanning utility.
- Start a print or scan operation.
- Sign in to Windows while Canon software launches.
- Use an application that accesses the scanner through WIA.
- Run a Canon background service or scheduled task.
An error can therefore appear even when the printer itself seems to work. A stale Canon startup entry may still be trying to load a file that was removed during cleanup.
What the exact error means
The wording gives useful clues:
- “The program can’t start because cnhw830.dll was not found” usually means the application cannot locate the DLL in its expected driver folder.
- “Error loading cnhw830.dll. The specified module could not be found” may mean the DLL exists, but another library it needs is missing.
- “cnhw830.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” can indicate corruption, an incompatible binary, or an architecture mismatch.
- “The procedure entry point could not be located” generally means the application found a DLL but it is the wrong version.
The full path shown in the error is important. A file under a Canon installation directory is more consistent with the expected use than a file launched from %AppData%, a temporary folder, or an unfamiliar user-profile directory. A suspicious location does not prove malware, but it deserves a security check before restoration.
Why the error appears
The most common causes are:
- A Canon driver installation was interrupted or damaged.
- Canon software was uninstalled incompletely.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion removed part of the driver.
- A Windows upgrade or migration left an older Canon startup entry behind.
- The Canon package does not match the device or Windows architecture.
- A required dependency is missing.
- A recent driver change caused a broader Windows component problem.
The correct fix depends on whether you still use the Canon device.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon driver
This is the primary fix when you still own and use the printer or scanner.
Identify the device
First check which Canon product is involved:
- Open Settings with Win + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Look for Canon printers or multifunction devices.
- Open Apps > Installed apps and search for Canon, IJ, MP, ScanGear, or similar Canon software.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps and look for Canon entries.
- In the error dialog, record the complete path and the name of the program that reports the failure.
If the device is not listed, open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues, Imaging devices, and Printers.
- Look for a Canon device with a warning icon.
- Right-click it, select Properties, and review the General and Driver tabs.
Remove the damaged package
Before reinstalling, close Canon utilities and disconnect the USB cable if the installer previously instructed you to do so.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the Canon application associated with the device.
- If several Canon entries exist, remove only the entries belonging to the affected printer or scanner.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and remove an obsolete Canon device if it remains listed.
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device and select Uninstall device if it is clearly an old or damaged entry.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
Do not remove an unrelated Canon device simply because its name contains Canon.
Install the replacement
- Go to Canon’s official support site.
- Select the exact printer or scanner model.
- Choose your installed Windows version and system architecture when Canon presents those choices.
- Download the model-specific printer, scanner, or MP Driver package.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Connect or power on the Canon device only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page and open the Canon scanning application or Windows Scan.
A successful repair normally removes the startup message and restores the device in Printers & scanners or the scanning application. If the installer reports that the operating system is unsupported, do not substitute a random DLL. Check whether Canon provides a compatible package for that model.

When you are manually hunting through model pages and comparing old driver packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while the repair or driver installation requires the full version. Reinstalling the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix for this Canon-specific file.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a driver component after detecting it as suspicious or corrupted.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection associated with
cnhw830.dll. - Expand it and review the detected path, threat name, and source.
- Compare the path with the Canon installation directory and the driver package you installed.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches. A matching filename is not proof that the file is genuine. If the file was in an unfamiliar profile or temporary directory, run a full Windows Security scan instead.
The safer approach is to reinstall the driver from Canon after confirming the device and package. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again, while allowing an unsafe file can expose the computer to risk. If Canon’s freshly downloaded installer is blocked, use the detection details and Canon support rather than downloading an isolated replacement DLL.

If you no longer use the Canon device, restoring the DLL is usually unnecessary. The better repair is to remove the software or disable the orphaned process that requests it.
Disable a startup application
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Find the Canon entry associated with the error.
- Right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears and you do not need the Canon device, uninstall the related Canon application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Check scheduled tasks
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks with Canon in the name or description.
- Open a task’s Actions tab before changing it.
- Disable only a task that clearly launches the obsolete Canon program.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random DLLs, disable regsvr32.exe globally, or remove tasks whose purpose you cannot identify. If the path points to an unfamiliar folder, scan the file and review its digital signature before deciding whether it is a leftover or an unwanted program.
Fix 4: Check architecture and missing dependencies
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL in the same way. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is generally used for native 64-bit components, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility. These names are confusing, which is another reason not to copy a DLL manually.
Use the Canon installer intended for the exact device and Windows version. Do not select a file based on a catalog’s “32-bit” or “64-bit” label, file size, or filename alone.

If Windows says “The specified module could not be found” while cnhw830.dll is visibly present, the missing item may be a dependency. Reinstalling the complete Canon package is more reliable than trying to identify and copy individual supporting DLLs.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are useful when a Windows update or system corruption is also involved, but they should not be expected to recreate a missing Canon driver file.
- Install pending Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the Canon software again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest the device. If it reports no integrity violations, the Canon installation still needs separate attention. If the commands fail, copy the exact result and continue with Canon driver repair rather than repeatedly running them.
For readers who prefer a guided repair instead of manually comparing SFC and DISM results, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. It is not required, and it cannot replace reinstalling the correct Canon package when the missing file belongs to that driver.
Why regsvr32 usually will not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
Do not use this as the default fix:
regsvr32 cnhw830.dll
There is no verified evidence that cnhw830.dll should be manually registered. A missing or damaged Canon WIA component should normally be repaired through the Canon installer. Running regsvr32 may produce an entry-point error and cannot restore missing dependencies, repair an incorrect architecture, or replace a quarantined file.
Do not copy the DLL into System32
Copying a downloaded DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 can create several problems:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The file may be malicious.
- It may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build.
- It may have incompatible dependencies.
- It may interfere with DLL search order.
- It can conceal a damaged Canon installation instead of repairing it.
Windows loads DLLs according to defined search rules. Placing an arbitrary file in a system directory can also create security and maintenance problems. Use the complete Canon driver package instead.
If System Restore is needed
Use System Restore only after a recent driver or software change and after checking the easier fixes.

- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore can revert drivers, registry settings, system files, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. If the Canon model is no longer supported by the current Windows version, contact Canon support or consider retiring the device instead of repeatedly restoring an old driver.
Frequently asked questions
Is cnhw830.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with the Canon Inkjet WIA Driver and is installed by Canon software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs cnhw830.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. Check its location, digital signature, installer source, and Windows Security result. A file in an unexpected user-profile or temporary directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Can I download cnhw830.dll separately?
You should not. A loose DLL may be unsafe, incompatible, or unable to work because the rest of the Canon driver package is missing.
Will SFC restore cnhw830.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while cnhw830.dll is associated with third-party Canon software. Reinstall the exact Canon driver package.
Why does the error appear only when Windows starts?
A Canon startup application or scheduled task may still reference the file after the driver was removed or quarantined. If you no longer use the device, disable the responsible entry and uninstall the leftover Canon software.

What if reinstalling Canon’s package still fails?
Confirm the exact model, remove the old Canon package, restart, check Device Manager for leftover printer or imaging entries, and retry the model-specific installer. If the model has no compatible driver for your Windows version, use Canon’s compatibility information or support channel rather than a third-party DLL.
