Colony management games put you in charge of a settlement, but usually not by controlling every inhabitant directly. You shape the base, set priorities, and manage resources while the game’s systems and characters determine how events unfold. The exact mix varies by title: some emphasize individual lives and unpredictable stories, while others focus on survival, exploration, or relations with rival groups.
What is a colony management game?
It is a strategy or simulation game about building and sustaining a settlement and managing the people who live there. Play is often indirect: you plan spaces, assign work, and respond to changing needs rather than issuing a direct command for every action. A genre glossary identifies base planning, resource pressure, and systems that can produce unscripted stories as recurring traits, not universal requirements (Game Developer).
“Colony management” is a broad label, not a formal taxonomy with a single required checklist. A game may model food, heat, water, shelter, disease, personal needs, or disasters, but no one should assume every title simulates all of them. The useful question is which pressures the particular game makes central.
What do you manage?
People and labor
Residents may have individual skills, health, needs, or work preferences, making labor allocation a key part of play. In RimWorld, for example, the unofficial community Basics guide discusses health, skills, work priorities, and construction (RimWorld Wiki: Basics). These details illustrate that game; they are not a universal manual for colony sims, and community guidance can reflect specific versions or play styles.

Resources and survival
Settlements need inputs and infrastructure to keep functioning. Depending on the game, a shortage can affect shelter, food, heat, water, health, or other needs. Resource pressure gives construction a purpose: a building or production chain is valuable because it helps the colony meet a need or withstand a threat.
Environment and hazards
The map can be more than a backdrop. RimWorld’s official site says a location’s biome and terrain affect animals, plants, diseases, temperature, rainfall, and mineral resources (RimWorld). That means the same settlement plan may not work everywhere: local conditions shape what is available and what residents must endure.

- COLONY SURVIVAL: Plan and strategize as you attempt to have the most survivors on the Moon while events that kill your people keep happening.
- LIFE & DEATH: During the game you will be drawing cards, some bad and some good that will determine the fate of your colony. Some will give you an advantage to surviving, while others will kill off some of your colony.
- OUT TO SPACE: Take the trek out to the newly colonized moon, try to outlast the other colonies and control the moon yourselves.
- BE HUMANITIES CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT: Humanity is venturing into the stars, leaving Earth behind to colonize new planets. Be the greatest city of humanities history as you survive the treacherous moon.
- PLAY TIME: Moon Colony Bloodbath is perfect for 1-5 Players, takes 45-90 minutes, and for ages 14+.
Events and stories
Some colony sims use interacting systems to create events and character outcomes the player did not script. Ludeon describes RimWorld as a colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller, and its Steam page calls it a story generator (Ludeon Studios; Steam). This storytelling emphasis is a defining feature of that game, not a promise about every title in the category.
How examples differ
Comparing a game’s stated emphasis is more useful than trying to rank every colony sim against one universal standard.

| Game | Emphasis described by its publisher or store | What that suggests |
|---|---|---|
| RimWorld | Ludeon highlights an AI storyteller and location-dependent planetary conditions; Steam describes it as a story generator and lists store categories including colony sim, base building, survival, strategy, management, sandbox, and simulation (Ludeon Studios; Steam). | Character stories, changing conditions, and settlement systems are prominent. Steam categories are retailer classifications, not an official genre standard. |
| Surviving the Aftermath | Paradox describes gathering resources in wastelands, using specialists, encountering rival colonies, and exploring the world (Paradox Interactive). | Its published description gives particular weight to expeditions and the world beyond the settlement. |
These descriptions show different possible centers of gravity; they do not establish an exhaustive list of games or a definitive ranking. A historical Australian government document also describes RimWorld’s colony premise and objectives, but it is descriptive rather than an official game specification (Australian Classification: RimWorld public report).

- You enjoy planning: The appeal may be arranging a base, assigning work, and balancing competing needs over time.
- You like systems-driven surprises: Look for games that foreground story generation or events emerging from interactions among characters and the world.
- You prefer exploration: Check whether expeditions, specialists, or contact with other settlements are core features, as in Paradox’s description of Surviving the Aftermath.
- You want direct character control: Check how much the game relies on priorities and simulated behavior rather than moment-to-moment commands; indirect management is common, but not every game handles it identically.
In a 2017 PC Gamer feature, Dwarf Fortress co-creator Tarn Adams described the appeal of watching named non-player characters interact over time and seeing how they respond to situations. In the same feature, RimWorld creator Tynan Sylvester said story generation was central to that game’s design. These are attributed perspectives from interviews, not a genre-wide consensus (PC Gamer; PC Gamer).
