The Commanders ruled Jayden Daniels out with an elbow injury, and head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Mariota will make his second start of the season.
Why Marcus Mariota is starting
Daniels dislocated his elbow in Washington’s Week 2 loss to Dallas. He was limited in practice during the week before the Colts game, then listed as out on the Commanders’ October 2 game-status report. The team said it would continue evaluating his progress; it did not set a return date or promise he would be back for Week 5. Washington’s announcement confirms Mariota as the starter.
Dan Quinn said of Mariota, “The nice part about Marcus is, man, does he have a real command on things that we need.” That is the coach’s stated confidence in the backup, not a prediction about the game’s result.
What Mariota did in relief against Dallas
When Daniels left the Dallas game, Mariota took over in the second half and completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown to Stefon Diggs, according to the Commanders’ September 23 team report.

In its October 2 preview, NFL.com noted that through two appearances—one start and one relief outing—Mariota had at least four passing touchdowns and no interceptions, a mark shared by four quarterbacks at that point in the 2026 season. This is a snapshot of his season to that date, not a forecast for the Colts game. NFL.com’s preview also reported Indianapolis had allowed 417.3 yards per game and 6.5 yards per play, both 32nd in the league, and 276.0 passing yards per game, 30th, as of October 2.
When and where Washington plays Indianapolis
The Week 4 game is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, with a 9:30 a.m. Eastern kickoff. The Commanders’ official schedule lists the date, venue, and time.

Other Washington injury designations
The Commanders’ official Week 4 injury report also listed wide receiver Terry McLaurin as questionable with a hamstring issue and running back Rachaad White as out with a shoulder issue. These are game-week designations, not guarantees of eventual availability or measures of how the absences might affect the matchup. See the team’s status report for the listed players.

Washington’s August 10 unofficial depth chart listed Daniels first and Mariota second. That was the preseason order; for Week 4, Daniels’ injury and Quinn’s October 2 announcement make Mariota the confirmed starter. The original chart is available in the team’s unofficial depth chart announcement.
