“The code execution cannot proceed because comwin.dll was not found” is typical Windows loader wording when an application cannot locate this file. If comwin.dll is missing, the safest repair is usually to restore the application that installed it, not to copy a replacement into a Windows system folder.

Fix 1: Repair the application that owns the file
This is the most likely and safest fix when the error names R-Keeper or a related point-of-sale component.
Identify the executable and installation folder
- Read the complete error dialog and note the program or executable named in it.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.

Fix 3: Rerun a matching R-Keeper update
An incomplete update can leave a new executable alongside older modules, or copy only part of the installation.
- Record the R-Keeper release or update currently approved for the workstation.
- Stop R-Keeper and related services.
- Obtain the same update package from the R-Keeper administrator or supplier.
- Run the updater using Run as administrator.
- Allow it to complete without shutting down the computer.
- Confirm that the application’s
binwin,baseworkmods, and CardServ-related folders belong to the same distribution. - Restart Windows.
- Test the application and any card-reader or COM-port operation.
If the update introduced the error, do not mix individual files from different releases. Use the vendor’s supported rollback procedure instead.
Fix 4: Check whether the file exists but cannot load
A message saying that ComWin.dll exists but cannot be loaded may indicate a dependency failure rather than a missing file. Microsoft explains that DLL failures can result from missing or conflicting dependencies.
Check these points:
- Is the file inside the expected R-Keeper application directory?
- Does the error name the R-Keeper executable, CardServ, or H-Reader?
- Did the problem begin after an update, cleanup, restore, or antivirus event?
- Is the application running under Windows or through Wine?
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does the DLL match the application release supplied by the vendor?
- Does the file have a valid signature or trusted origin?
- Are other DLLs missing from the same installation?
The public documentation does not verify whether this module is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not assume that copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 resolves an architecture mismatch. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is generally used for 64-bit system components and SysWOW64 for 32-bit components, but neither folder is the documented location for this R-Keeper module.

Fix 5: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party R-Keeper DLL, so use them when Windows itself has broader symptoms such as damaged system features, repeated servicing errors, or multiple unrelated applications failing.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:

sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC procedure. If SFC reports repaired files but comwin.dll is still missing, repair R-Keeper instead. If DISM or SFC reports errors it cannot fix, save the result and provide it to the administrator or software supplier.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the symptom points to hardware
A missing comwin.dll is not automatically a driver problem. If R-Keeper starts but the card reader, COM port, or related hardware fails, the cause may be a driver, configuration, permissions, cabling, or the selected input module.
To check the device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers if the reader connects by USB.
- Look for a warning icon or an unrecognized device.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by the device manufacturer or approved by the R-Keeper administrator.
- Restart the computer and test the reader.
Do not remove a working port driver merely because the DLL error mentions COM. If the device is physically present but misidentified, confirm the required COM-port number and R-Keeper configuration with the supplier.

Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Windows Features will not normally install ComWin.dll, but an application may depend on an optional Windows component.
- Open Start.

- Review features specifically required by the R-Keeper supplier.
- Enable only the approved feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
Do not enable random legacy components as a DLL repair. No verified evidence connects this file to a particular .NET, DirectX, or Visual C++ package.
Does regsvr32 fix comwin.dll?
Usually, no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A port-I/O module or missing runtime file may not support registration.
Use it only if the application vendor specifically instructs you to register this exact file:

Why DLL download sites are a bad repair
Random DLL repositories may provide malware, an incompatible architecture, an incorrect release, or a file with no trustworthy publisher information. A replacement can also hide an incomplete R-Keeper installation or create a version mismatch.
The safe sources are:
- The original R-Keeper installation media.
- The exact R-Keeper update package approved for the workstation.
- The R-Keeper administrator, reseller, or software supplier.
- A verified antivirus restoration after the file’s provenance has been confirmed.

- The executable named in the dialog.
- The executable’s complete path.
- The location of any existing
ComWin.dll. - The R-Keeper or CardServ release used by the workstation.
- Whether the system is 32-bit, 64-bit, or using Wine.
- The time the problem began.
- Recent updates, restores, cleanup operations, or antivirus detections.
- Protection History details.
- Event Viewer entries related to the application.
- Whether the file disappears after being restored.
If the error began after a system change and a suitable restore point exists, Windows System Restore may help. It can revert system files, settings, applications, updates, and configuration changes, so use it through an administrator-approved recovery plan.
