You generally can’t connect a Nintendo Switch directly to a Chromebook with an HDMI cable. The practical way to view or record Switch gameplay on a Chromebook is to dock a TV-mode Switch, connect the dock’s HDMI output to a USB video-capture device, then connect that device to the Chromebook. It may appear as an external camera in ChromeOS, but compatibility varies by capture device, Chromebook, and app.

For playing while you capture, choose a device with HDMI passthrough and play on a connected TV or monitor. A Chromebook’s software preview can be delayed. If you want a full streaming setup with OBS, overlays, and audio mixing, a Windows or Mac computer is generally the safer choice.

What works—and what doesn’t

Goal Practical option Important limitation
Plug the Switch into the Chromebook’s HDMI port Usually not possible A Chromebook HDMI port is normally an output, not an input.
Play on a larger screen Connect the Switch dock directly to a TV or monitor No Chromebook is needed.
See Switch video on a Chromebook Dock → USB capture device → Chromebook The capture device must work with ChromeOS and the app you use.
Play and capture at once Use a capture device with HDMI passthrough and connect a TV or monitor Requires a second HDMI cable and display.
Save existing screenshots and clips Transfer them from the Switch by USB or microSD This does not provide live gameplay video.

The original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED use the dock for TV-style HDMI output; the handheld console itself does not provide conventional video output. Elgato’s setup guidance likewise says to connect the Switch through its dock, not directly to a capture device (Elgato’s Switch setup instructions).

Switch Lite is different: it does not support TV mode, so the standard dock-and-HDMI capture method does not apply. A capture card cannot add video output the console does not provide.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Switch 2 is a separate case. Do not assume that instructions or hardware compatibility for the original Switch and OLED automatically apply to Switch 2; check Nintendo’s current dock and video-output guidance and the capture device’s specifications for that model.

What you need

For a basic setup, gather:

  • A TV-mode Nintendo Switch (original or OLED), its compatible dock, and dock power adapter.
  • An HDMI cable from the dock to the capture device.
  • A USB video-capture device that may work as a standard UVC camera on ChromeOS.
  • A USB cable and a compatible Chromebook USB port. You may need a USB-C adapter or hub.
  • A ChromeOS app or browser service that can select an external camera.

To play comfortably while capturing, add a second HDMI cable and a TV or monitor. The connection is:

Switch in dock → dock HDMI OUT → capture HDMI IN
Capture HDMI OUT → TV or monitor
Capture USB → Chromebook

HDMI passthrough sends the picture directly to the TV or monitor while USB sends a capture feed to the Chromebook. Elgato describes passthrough on the HD60 X as real-time, while software previews can have latency (HD60 X Switch setup). Without passthrough, you may still see video in an app on the Chromebook, but playing from that preview can feel delayed—especially in rhythm, fighting, or racing games.

Choose a capture device carefully

Look for a USB capture device that identifies itself as a USB Video Class (UVC) camera and does not require a Windows-only driver. UVC makes a device more promising for a Chromebook, but it is not a guarantee: ChromeOS, the particular app, supported resolution, frame rate, audio handling, and USB connection all matter.

  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

If you want to play while recording, prioritize HDMI passthrough. A basic USB capture device may be less expensive and may work for viewing or simple recording, but performance and audio support vary. Check the exact model’s documentation for ChromeOS support rather than relying only on phrases such as “plug and play.”

Be especially cautious with capture hardware designed around a Windows or Mac utility. For example, Elgato lists Windows, macOS, and iPad for the HD60 X, but not ChromeOS (HD60 X product specifications). It can be capable hardware for supported computers, but that does not make it a dependable Chromebook purchase. Verify the operating-system list and required software before buying.

Also check the USB requirements. A USB-C connector does not by itself mean a port or cable supports video capture, and some cables are charging-only or too slow. Prefer a direct Chromebook connection while testing; an unpowered or overloaded hub can cause dropouts. Google notes that USB-C cables and external-device compatibility can affect performance (Chromebook external-device guidance).

Connect the Switch and Chromebook

  1. Dock the Switch and connect power. Seat the console in its dock and connect the dock’s power adapter. The console should switch to TV output.
  2. Connect HDMI in the correct direction. Run a cable from the dock’s HDMI OUT to the capture device’s HDMI IN. Do not connect the handheld console directly to the capture device.
  3. Add passthrough if available. Connect the capture device’s HDMI OUT to a TV or monitor, then select that display’s matching HDMI input. You should be able to play on that display independently of the Chromebook preview.
  4. Connect USB to the Chromebook. Attach the capture device’s USB output directly to the Chromebook if possible. Use a data-capable adapter if the device and Chromebook use different connector types.
  5. Check the picture in ChromeOS. Open the Camera app, select Video, and use the camera-switching control to choose the external capture device. Google documents switching cameras when an external camera is connected (Chromebook Camera help). If video appears, the basic capture path is working.

ChromeOS labels and controls can change by version. If the Camera app does not show a camera selector, look for its camera-switching icon or test the device in a browser-based app that lets you choose a camera.

Allow camera access in ChromeOS and websites

A capture device can be detected by ChromeOS but blocked from an app or website. Check the Chromebook’s camera privacy control under Settings → Privacy and security → Privacy controls, and turn on camera access if it is off. Then allow the relevant app or website to use the camera. In Chrome, also check the site’s camera permission and choose the capture device from its camera list. Google explains how camera permissions apply to ChromeOS apps, browser sites, and Android apps in its camera and microphone settings guidance.

School or work administrators may restrict camera access. Some apps may not handle high-resolution or high-frame-rate feeds, and a device visible in the Camera app may not work in every Android app or website. If another app is using the capture device, close it and try again.

Recording and streaming from a Chromebook

Basic recording

If ChromeOS exposes the capture device as a camera, the Camera app may be able to record its feed. Whether it captures the expected resolution, frame rate, and audio depends on the Chromebook, capture device, and app; confirm the result with a short test recording before making a longer one.

ChromeOS screen recording

ChromeOS screen recording records the Chromebook display, not the Switch’s HDMI signal directly. First show the capture feed in an app or browser window, then use the Screen Capture controls to record the screen. Google says recordings are saved to the Downloads folder by default (Chromebook screen recording help).

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Red Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • 6.2” LCD screen.
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers

This route may include the Camera or browser interface, may not retain the capture device’s full quality, and can tax a lower-end Chromebook because it has to display and record the video. Audio routing can also differ from one app to another.

Streaming and OBS

Live streaming usually requires more than displaying video: you may need camera and microphone permissions, a streaming service, and a way to combine gameplay, voice, overlays, and chat. Do not assume that Windows OBS instructions apply to ChromeOS. Google’s current Linux environment documentation says cameras are not supported inside the Linux environment (Linux on Chromebook limitations), so installing OBS in that container is not a dependable capture-card workflow. For advanced OBS production or reliable audio mixing, use a supported Windows or macOS computer.

Understand the audio path

Switch game audio can travel over HDMI, but a capture device and app must expose and handle that audio correctly. Seeing video does not prove that audio is being captured. A headset connected to the Switch may change whether sound goes to HDMI, so test with and without it. Some capture devices have a 3.5 mm jack, but it may be a line-in rather than a microphone input; Elgato identifies the HD60 X analog connection as line-in, not a mic port (HD60 X setup details).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test each part separately:

  1. Listen to Switch audio through the TV or monitor connected to passthrough.
  2. Check whether the Camera app or browser app receives game audio along with video.
  3. Test the Chromebook microphone as a separate input.
  4. Repeat with a Switch headset disconnected if HDMI audio is missing.

Do not assume game sound and microphone audio will automatically be mixed into one recording. If audio is essential, check the capture device’s audio documentation and test the exact app you plan to use.

Troubleshoot by symptom

No picture on the TV or monitor

  1. Confirm the Switch is fully seated in the dock and the dock’s power adapter is connected.
  2. Check that the cable runs from dock HDMI OUT to capture HDMI IN.
  3. Check that the TV or monitor is connected to capture HDMI OUT, and select the correct display input.
  4. Try a different HDMI cable, then restart the dock and capture device.
  5. If needed, set the Switch’s TV resolution to 720p or 1080p and TV sound to Stereo. For HD60 X specifically, Elgato also recommends disabling Match TV Power State; these are vendor-specific troubleshooting suggestions, not universal requirements.

The Chromebook does not list the capture device

  1. Unplug and reconnect USB, then try another Chromebook port.
  2. Temporarily remove any hub or adapter and connect directly. If an adapter is necessary, verify that it supports data.
  3. Try a different USB cable; a charging-only or low-speed cable may not work as expected.
  4. Open the Camera app and use its camera selector; check camera privacy controls and app permissions.
  5. Restart the Chromebook. If possible, test the capture device on another computer and check whether the manufacturer requires a driver or utility unavailable on ChromeOS.

The capture device appears, but the picture is black

Check the HDMI direction and dock output first. Then try a conservative Switch TV resolution, close other apps that may be using the camera, and reconnect the USB cable directly. A black screen can also result from unsupported formats, USB power or bandwidth limits, an HDMI handshake issue, or a faulty cable or capture device.

HDCP is a protection mechanism that can prevent capture of protected HDMI video. Elgato says HDCP is off by default on Nintendo Switch, so it is less likely than a dock, cable, format, or app issue during ordinary Switch gameplay (Elgato’s HDCP guidance).

Picture works, but gameplay feels delayed

That is expected with a software preview. Use the TV or monitor connected to HDMI passthrough as your gaming display, and treat the Chromebook feed as the recording or streaming source.

Picture works, but there is no sound

Set TV sound to Stereo, test without a headset connected to the Switch, and check the app’s selected audio source. Try the Camera app and a browser app separately. Confirm that the capture device passes HDMI audio and exposes it to the app; a device’s audio jack may not be a microphone input.

Linux or OBS cannot see the capture device

This is not necessarily a fault with the capture card. ChromeOS’s Linux environment is separate from its camera system, and Google documents camera support as unavailable there. Use a ChromeOS or browser workflow if it meets your needs; for a conventional OBS capture setup, use a supported Windows or Mac computer.

Alternatives if a Chromebook is not the right fit

  • Just want a bigger screen? Connect the dock to a TV or monitor directly. This is simpler and avoids playing from a delayed software preview.
  • Only need clips or screenshots? Transfer existing captures from the Switch by USB or microSD using Nintendo’s transfer instructions. This does not capture live gameplay.
  • Want overlays, audio mixing, and dependable streaming? A Windows or macOS computer with capture hardware listed as supported by its manufacturer is generally the more reliable choice.

Quick buying checklist

  • Confirm the device’s operating-system support; do not infer ChromeOS support from Windows compatibility.
  • Prefer UVC camera-class operation without a proprietary driver, while recognizing it is not a guarantee.
  • Choose HDMI passthrough if you want to play on a TV or monitor while capturing.
  • Check HDMI audio support if game sound matters, and distinguish line-in from microphone input.
  • Match the USB cable, adapter, and Chromebook port to the device’s data-rate and power requirements. Test direct rather than through a hub first.
  • Check the Switch model: Switch Lite does not support the standard docked capture method.
