Contabo snapshots and Auto Backup can help you recover a VPS, but neither keeps a YouTube stream live during a failure or restore. Use snapshots as short-lived rollback points, enable Auto Backup on an eligible plan if its limits fit your needs, and keep critical files and configuration in a separate copy. Then test the actual stream workload: backup features do not prove that a VPS can encode and deliver it continuously.
What snapshots and backups protect—and what they do not
A snapshot saves the current state of a supported VPS so you can roll back after a system or software change. Contabo explicitly says a snapshot is not a backup. It expires after 30 days, cannot be downloaded, and uses snapshot storage separate from the VPS disk. The number of available snapshot slots depends on the plan. Auto Backup is a separate, daily off-server copy for eligible VPS families. It can help if the VPS host fails, but it remains within Contabo and is not a customer-selected location. It is short-retention and supports whole-VPS restores only. Neither feature preserves the live ingest connection during a VPS failure or restore.

These are the features listed in Contabo’s VPS documentation and Storage VPS documentation, accessed 3 October 2026. Plan offerings can change, so check the relevant plan in the Control Panel before deployment. Contabo describes Storage VPS as prioritizing capacity over peak I/O throughput, using SSD rather than NVMe storage, and recommends Cloud VPS with NVMe when extreme I/O throughput is needed. That does not make a Storage VPS a required companion server.

How Contabo Auto Backup works
Contabo documents Auto Backup as an add-on for Core VPS and Performance VPS, available at deployment or later. The first backup is full; subsequent backups are incremental. Runs are scheduled daily, with at least eight hours between them. You cannot choose the time within Contabo’s standard backup window or select the backup location.
- Up to 10 backups are retained, each for a maximum of 10 days; the oldest is deleted first when the cap is reached.
- Copies are stored in a Contabo data center separate from the VPS host, but not outside Contabo or in a region you select.
- A restore is performed to the original VPS through the Control Panel, overwrites current data, and makes the VPS unavailable until the restore completes.
- Restores cover the whole VPS; individual-file recovery is not offered.
- Contabo says it ensures backup performance and accessibility, but does not guarantee recoverability or perform recovery for you. Verify that backups exist and rehearse your recovery procedure.

A practical backup and recovery workflow
- Before a major change, create a named snapshot if your plan supports it. Use it as a rollback point, not your only copy: it expires and cannot be downloaded. Check the snapshot’s deletion date and your plan’s slot count in the Control Panel.
- Enable Auto Backup if its plan eligibility and restore model fit. After enabling it, confirm in the Control Panel that a backup has completed. Do not assume the feature is active just because it was available at checkout.
- Keep another copy of important files and configuration. Maintain an independently managed copy of stream assets and the configuration needed to rebuild the service. Protect credentials and stream keys; do not put secrets in public notes or an unprotected archive.
- Rehearse recovery outside a critical live period. A restore overwrites current VPS data and takes the VPS offline. Test a restore on a maintenance window or a separate test instance, and document the rebuild steps.
- Test the livestream at its intended settings. Confirm that the encoder, VPS resources, and sustained outbound connection can handle the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup for continuous operation.
Check streaming capacity separately from backup coverage
YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS ingest, recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest, and advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health. For H.264, its published bitrate recommendations include these ranges, in guidance accessed 3 October 2026:

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS port or route can sustain the stream. Choose the output quality, codec, bitrate, and encoding method first, then test CPU or hardware-encoding feasibility and sustained outbound throughput on the actual VPS. Common recovery and streaming problems
- No snapshot option: Check the VPS family and plan. The current documentation does not list snapshots for Storage VPS; snapshot slots vary by Core VPS plan.
- No Auto Backup option: Check plan eligibility. Auto Backup is documented for Core VPS and Performance VPS, not Storage VPS.
- A snapshot is too old or unavailable: Snapshots expire after 30 days and cannot be downloaded. Use a separate copy for files you need to retain independently.
- One file needs recovery: Auto Backup restores the whole VPS rather than individual files. Retrieve important files from your independently managed copy, or plan a whole-VPS restore when appropriate.
- The stream stops during restore: The VPS is unavailable until the restore completes, and a VPS failure or restore interrupts its ingest connection. Schedule recovery outside critical streaming hours and have a rebuild or restart plan.
- The VPS restores but cannot sustain the stream: Backup success does not measure encoding capacity or egress. Test the actual stream configuration and monitor YouTube stream health and VPS resource/network behavior.
