Which abilities should you unlock first?
Choose abilities according to the job you want them to do in a fight—such as controlling enemies, supporting direct weapon pressure, or enabling a tactical approach. Remedy describes combat builds that can emphasize close-range fighting or use tactics such as summons, but its developer material does not rank early abilities or establish one optimal unlock order. Check the current in-game descriptions and prerequisites before spending on a specific node.
Build around the combat loop you use most
Remedy describes a momentum-based interaction: melee hits restore Combat Ability resource, abilities can stun enemies and create opportunities for executions, and executions temporarily boost melee damage. These mechanics make a power-focused setup and a weapon-focused setup support one another rather than operate as completely separate paths. Remedy’s combat overview explains the loop.
If you rely on abilities
Favor choices that help you use abilities regularly and capitalize on the openings they create. In practical terms, consider how an ability fits into a sequence of control, stun, and follow-up damage, and whether your weapon pressure helps sustain that sequence by restoring resource. This is a playstyle-based recommendation, not a tested ranking of particular upgrade nodes.

If you favor close-range weapon pressure
Prioritize Aberrant forms and talent choices that complement the ranges and attacks you actually use. Remedy’s published material describes separate form upgrade trees, but it does not establish current node values or prove that one form is best. If you want a mixed or tactical build
Use abilities to shape the encounter, then choose a weapon form and talents that make your preferred follow-up effective. Compare options by their combat role—direct damage, crowd control, defense, or tactical support—and by how naturally they fit the resource loop. There is no published comparative damage data to settle those choices for every player.

Do not overlook artifacts
Artifacts provide passive modifiers that can affect survivability, combat performance, exploration, or resource economy. Compare an artifact’s specific effect with any condition or trade-off it imposes; a bonus is useful only if its cost and activation conditions suit your build. Remedy discusses artifacts and other progression systems in its New Game Plus and progression overview.
Plan for first-run limits and New Game Plus
You cannot unlock everything during one playthrough, so treat early spending as specialization: invest in a coherent combat approach instead of assuming every branch will be available at once. Remedy says New Game Plus carries over Aberrant upgrades, health and Combat Ability resource improvements, unlocked supernatural combat abilities, talents, and artifacts. It also adds talent nodes and lets players equip multiple different combat abilities from the same boss. Traversal abilities remain tied to story progression and do not carry over. Remedy Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov describes NG+ as offering more room to experiment with combinations unavailable during the first run.

Keep story unlocks separate from combat-build decisions. A traversal ability is tied to progression through the story; it is not the same kind of investment as an upgrade intended to shape how you fight.

Epic’s guide, published in September 2026, reports that Command unlocks after the Unknown Resonant encounter and that Resonant Tokens can unlock an ability in the Gap; Ignite and Inferno are given as an example.
