Is CONTROL Resonant a sequel to CONTROL?
Yes. Remedy describes CONTROL Resonant as a full sequel to its 2019 game, while also positioning it as a possible entry point for new players. That makes it a continuation of the series, not a remake or spin-off. Whether its story is easy to follow without playing the first game is not established by that description.
For returning players, the central change is the lead character: the story follows Dylan Faden, while Jesse remains relevant to his story. Dylan is the sole playable character, according to Remedy. That is a notable shift from the original game’s focus on Jesse Faden. Jesse still matters to the story, but players should not expect to switch between the siblings as playable leads based on the studio’s description. Where does the sequel take place?
The story moves beyond the Oldest House into a Manhattan distorted by paranatural forces. Remedy describes impossible architecture, shifting realities and hostile entities in the city. That setting expands the series’ scope, though the studio’s announcement does not establish whether the larger environment preserves the original’s atmosphere in practice.
How does it differ from the first game?
Remedy presents CONTROL Resonant as a more open and dynamic experience, combining action, exploration and player choice while retaining the series’ mystery, atmosphere and tension. Those are design goals from the developer, not independent evidence of combat quality, meaningful choices or how the new scale feels during play. Remedy’s official game page outlines that framing.
A useful comparison with CONTROL therefore depends on what you value: the shift from Jesse to Dylan, the move from the Oldest House to Manhattan, and the promised wider mix of activities. The available official descriptions do not establish which game has better combat, story, pacing or performance.

Remedy’s description of CONTROL Resonant as a new entry point suggests an intention to welcome newcomers, but it does not prove that prior knowledge is unnecessary. If you want the background to Jesse, Dylan and the series’ paranatural setting, playing the 2019 game first is the more context-rich route. If you are new, expect the sequel’s own story to introduce its premise, while recognizing that the degree of continuity remains unclear from the official material.
