Core Keeper’s basic loop is simple: mine resources, craft stronger gear, explore new biomes, and prepare for boss encounters. The early ore tiers offer a useful progression route, but boss order and the way you contribute to a world are flexible. You can focus on combat, exploration, base building, farming, or automation rather than optimizing every system at once.
How to get started in Core Keeper
Core Keeper is an underground mining sandbox centered on the Core. Its official Steam description presents it as an adventure for 1–8 players built around mining, building, fighting, crafting, and farming: Core Keeper on Steam. Think of those activities as connected parts of a loop: gathering opens up crafting, better equipment makes exploration and combat more manageable, and exploration supplies materials for the next round of upgrades.
You do not need to master every system before exploring. A practical start is to make a small base near the Core, gather nearby resources, and add the stations that let you craft, cook, repair, and store what you find.
Set up a working base
The community progression guide recommends prioritizing a workbench, furnace, repair station, cooking pot, anvil, and bed as you develop your early base. Chests placed next to workbenches can supply materials to those stations, according to the guide. Keep storage near the crafting area so that returning from a mining trip does not turn every upgrade into a search for ingredients. See the Core Keeper progression guide for its station and storage recommendations.

How to progress through the early ore tiers
A useful early route is to craft copper tools, then head into the Clay Caves to find tin, followed by the Forgotten Ruins for iron-tier crafting. The beginner guide describes this sequence as a way to advance equipment, not a requirement to follow one exact route. Exploring, gathering, and improving your base along the way can all support progression. The community beginner guide outlines the copper-to-tin-to-iron path.
- Copper: Make the early tools and equipment that help you gather and explore.
- Tin: Look for it in the Clay Caves and use it to move into the next equipment tier.
- Iron: The Forgotten Ruins are the next resource area in this route and provide iron-tier crafting materials.
Treat each new biome as an opportunity to gather materials and assess risk. If a trip becomes costly or you are carrying valuable supplies, return to the base or Core, store what you have, and prepare before pushing farther.

Which bosses should you fight first?
Glurch, Ghorm, and the Hive Mother are the first three bosses featured in the beginner guide’s progression sequence. Their order is not mandatory: the progression guide says you can attempt them in any order once you find them. Their drops provide the items used to activate their statues and power up the Core, so defeating them is part of opening up further progression.
Before a fight, bring equipment appropriate to your current tier, food or other consumables you rely on, and a clear route back to your base. Mark or otherwise remember the route to the encounter so that a return trip is easier if you need to restock. After collecting a boss drop, return to the Core to use it at the corresponding statue. The guides do not establish one universally best build or strategy, so choose preparation that suits your equipment and comfort with the encounter.

What changes in multiplayer?
The community beginner guide reports that boss health and characteristics scale with the number of connected players. It also says ordinary enemy health does not scale in the same way, while additional enemies appear around players over time. These are community-guide descriptions of mechanics, not a verified platform or cross-play comparison.
Coordinate before an encounter: agree on who will engage the boss, who will support with supplies or ranged attacks, and where the group will regroup if separated. Outside combat, multiplayer can make specialization practical: one person can explore or gather while another tends the base, crafts equipment, or handles food production. The official Steam description lists the game for 1–8 players, but the guide details above should not be taken as a complete account of every current multiplayer setting.

Choose a playstyle that fits your world
Core Keeper gives players several ways to contribute. You do not need to farm every skill or chase an optimized build to make progress; focus on the activities you enjoy and use the others when they solve a specific need.
- Combat: Improve equipment and prepare food or consumables before challenging bosses or exploring dangerous areas.
- Gathering and exploration: Search new biomes for ore and other resources that unlock crafting options.
- Crafting and base building: Keep useful stations and storage organized so that upgrades and repairs are convenient.
- Farming: Grow food if you want a steady supply for exploration and encounters.
- Automation: Develop systems that reduce repetitive work when that suits your goals; it is an option, not a prerequisite for progression.
When deciding whether to explore now or prepare more, weigh what you are carrying, how far you are from safety, and whether your current equipment feels adequate. A short return to craft or restock can make sense, but the game does not require a single prescribed route through its early bosses.

Normal or hard mode?
The community beginner guide reports that hard mode doubles base enemy and boss health and damage, while boss chests offer 50% more loot slots; it reports no unique hard-mode items. These are guide-reported mechanics, and the guide may not reflect later balance changes. Check current patch notes before choosing a world based on those details. If you want a less demanding first run, normal mode avoids the guide-described hard-mode increases; choose hard mode if its added challenge is part of the appeal.
Useful keyboard controls
The beginner guide lists a few keyboard conveniences: Shift equips a torch, Q deposits matching items into an open chest, and R sorts inventory. These are keyboard-specific instructions from the guide and should not be assumed to apply to controller or console layouts. Check your in-game bindings if a key differs on your setup.
What is new in the 1.3 era?
As of October 8, 2026, the latest version listed by the community-maintained wiki is 1.3.0.4, with hotfixes noted in late September: Core Keeper version history. Pugstorm’s September 2026 update announced Riders of the Underground (1.3), launched September 21, 2026. The update adds a Moss sub-biome in the Forgotten Ruins, Orex cattle, and saddle items that allow cattle to be mounted. Read the dated September 2026 community update for the announcement and details.
The same update describes Trials of the Depths (1.4) and Beyond the Breach (1.5) as future roadmap entries, not released features. Treat roadmap plans as planned content unless a later official announcement confirms their release.
Is the Explorer’s Guide current?
Pugstorm and Fireshine Games announced a digital Explorer’s Guide on March 5, 2026, describing it as containing more than 100 hand-drawn illustrations. The announcement’s stated coverage reached Void & Voltage; it does not establish that the guide covers later content such as Riders of the Underground. Check the official guide announcement and any newer edition information before relying on it as a complete reference for current content.
