But in 2026, its legacy software is the deciding caveat. Corsair lists the M90 firmware update as compatible only with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and there is no verified current iCUE setup path. Consider a used M90 only if you specifically want its shape and can test its advanced features before keeping it.
What the M90 was designed to do
The Vengeance M90 was Corsair’s MMO- and RTS-oriented mouse, built to put a large set of commands under the hand. It was the button-heavy counterpart to the more FPS-focused Vengeance M60; both used a laser sensor rated up to 5,700 DPI, while the M90 emphasized programmable controls. AnandTech’s contemporary overview describes that distinction.
Its 15-button count includes the main clicks and scroll-wheel click, top controls, nine side macro buttons and a thumb-area sniper/sensitivity button. That is a lot of inputs, but the total does not tell you how quickly you can identify and reach them. The side buttons differ in shape and size, which can help with tactile recognition, yet they lack prominent numbering or color coding. Their usefulness depends on your grip, hand size and willingness to build muscle memory. Hardware Secrets and TechwareLabs describe the button arrangement; Hardware Secrets also discusses its practical limitations.
Build, shape and everyday feel
Contemporary reviews describe a rubberized or soft-touch upper shell over an aluminum frame or base, a metal scroll wheel with a rubberized surface, and a braided USB cable. The result is a substantial, rear-weighted wired mouse rather than a light, easy-to-flick design. Reviewers praised its solid construction and comfort for users who prefer a larger, heavier mouse. Bit-tech, TechwareLabs and WSGF cover its materials and feel.

- Comfortable Contoured Shape: Sculpted to fit the contours of your palm, regardless of hand size or grip style, with a right-side finger rest for added support.
The weight is a trade-off, not a universal advantage. It can make the mouse feel planted, but it can be tiring for users who prefer lightweight models and is less convenient for repeated rapid repositioning. Contemporary testing found no user-adjustable weight system. The reviewed sources establish that it is heavy, but do not provide a sufficiently verified exact mass.
Buttons in games: useful, but not effortless
The M90’s side controls suit games with numerous abilities, shortcuts, inventory actions or RTS commands. Having commands close at hand can be useful, and the buttons’ differing shapes provide some tactile cues. But reviewers did not find every button equally easy to locate and press during demanding play. Some require a thumb stretch, and several were criticized as mushy or difficult to press. Expect practice rather than instant access to all nine side buttons. Techgage and WSGF discuss the controls in use.
The thumb-area sniper button temporarily switches to a preset lower sensitivity while held, then returns to the previous setting when released. It is more relevant to aiming in FPS games than to MMO play. The feature adds flexibility, but it does not turn the M90 into a modern competitive-FPS recommendation: its weight and the extra side controls may be a poor match for players prioritizing quick repositioning. Hardware Secrets describes the button’s behavior.

Sensor specifications and gaming performance
The M90 uses a laser sensor with a published maximum of 5,700 DPI. A contemporary review also lists adjustment in 100-DPI increments, up to 30 g acceleration, a maximum speed of 165 inches per second, polling-rate choices of 1,000, 500, 250 and 125 Hz, and five lift-distance settings with surface-quality detection. These are historical published specifications, not modern independent performance measurements. TechwareLabs lists the specifications.
A high DPI figure is a sensitivity ceiling, not a complete measure of tracking quality. For MMO and RTS use, the M90’s ergonomics and buttons are likely more consequential than its maximum DPI. For competitive FPS play, its mass and period laser-sensor design make a current lightweight optical mouse a more sensible starting point. Laser sensors can also behave differently across reflective or unusual surfaces; the published figures alone do not establish how this particular used unit will track on your desk.
Software, macros and profiles
The M90 was configured with Corsair Vengeance Gaming Software, not the current software experience associated with newer Corsair peripherals. The archived Vengeance M90 software guide covers the M90 and M60 mice and K90 keyboard. Contemporary reviewers raised concerns about the software’s beta-era polish, documentation, discoverability, profile saving and reliability. WSGF and Techgage describe some of those issues.

The M90 supports up to 50 computer-stored profiles through its software and up to six active profiles in 48 KB of onboard memory. Those are different things: computer profiles depend on the software and host system, while onboard profiles are stored on the mouse after they have been configured and written. Hardware playback can therefore be more portable and less dependent on a background application; software playback can be more reliant on the installed program. In one contemporary test, Laptop Mag reported macro failures in Borderlands 2 with software playback that were alleviated by switching to hardware playback. That result does not guarantee every profile or game will behave the same way.
The archived workflow is to select the M90 and a profile in Vengeance Gaming Software, choose a button, assign an action or macro, then save the profile. For a recorded macro, the guide’s workflow uses the MR button to begin and end recording after selecting the target button. If you need profiles away from the setup computer, write them to onboard memory and test them on the other machine. These are legacy instructions, not verified Windows 10 or Windows 11 steps. Macro support also does not mean a game permits automation: check the rules for each game before using recorded actions.
Current Windows and support situation
Corsair’s legacy mouse-software page places the M90 in its legacy area and lists its firmware update as compatible only with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The page does not present the M90 as a current iCUE product or provide a current Windows 10/11 configuration path.

- Iconic Aluminum Frame: The M65 RGB ULTRA’s anodized aluminum frame makes for lasting durability with a familiar shape.
- CORSAIR MARKSMAN 26,000 DPI Optical Sensor: With an astonishing native 26,000 DPI and 650 inches per seconds (IPS) tracking, the MARKSMAN sensor captures your every mouse movement.
- Optical Switches: Left and right-click switches deliver hyper-fast and precise responses, while standing up to years of rigorous use.
- CORSAIR AXON Hyper-Processing Technology: Registers and transmits your movements and clicks up to 8x faster than conventional gaming mice thanks to a native 8,000Hz polling rate.
- Sensor Fusion Control: Combines a six-axis gyro and accelerometer to enable ultra-low lift-off distance for more accurate tracking when repositioning your mouse.
That does not establish that every M90 will fail to move a cursor on a newer Windows PC, nor does it prove that every advanced feature will fail. Basic clicks and pointer movement may work as with a generic USB mouse, while remapping, DPI settings, macros, lift-distance options and profile management depend on legacy software or profiles already stored in the mouse. Corsair’s listing is not evidence that unofficial compatibility workarounds will be reliable. If you need to configure a blank or reset M90 on a current system, assume there may be troubleshooting unless you can test that exact unit first.
If the legacy software will not install
- Connect the mouse directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Remove conflicting or failed Vengeance software installations, then reboot before trying again.
- If the installer launches but refuses to run, compatibility settings may be worth testing; they are not a verified fix.
- If possible, test the legacy workflow on a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 machine.
- Do not flash firmware unless the package is clearly intended for the exact M90 and the mouse is stable. Do not disconnect it during an update.
- If configuration remains unusable, treat the mouse as a basic pointer or return it rather than counting on its advanced controls.
Who should consider an M90 now?
- Existing owners: Keep it if you like its weight and shape and your saved profiles still serve you. Test the controls and profile playback you rely on rather than assuming an old setup will transfer cleanly.
- MMO, RTS and shortcut-heavy application users: The many physical inputs may suit you if the layout feels natural and you can make the legacy configuration workflow work. A large button count alone is not a reason to choose it.
- FPS players: The sniper button may be useful, but the weight and side-button emphasis make it a conditional choice, not a default competitive mouse.
- Windows 10 or 11 buyers who need remapping: Prefer a mouse with a documented current configuration path unless the seller lets you test the M90’s software and onboard profiles on your own setup.
- Collectors or people replacing a known favorite: A used M90 can make sense when its particular shape and feel are the point, provided its condition and working features justify the price.
Launch-era prices are not a guide to present value. Contemporary publications cited figures ranging from about $69 to $79.99, including Bit-tech’s $74.99 before-tax review price; these are historical prices, not current used-market valuations. AnandTech, Laptop Mag and Bit-tech reported those figures in their respective review-era coverage. Scarcity or collector interest can push a used listing above what its condition and practical usefulness warrant.

For an old mouse, present condition matters more than the original specification sheet. Test it on a plain, non-reflective mouse pad and, where possible, on the operating system and software you actually plan to use.
Best Value
- 8200 DPI laser sensor - Precise tracking for highly accurate mouse control during demanding gaming sessions
- Dedicated sniper button - Quickly switch resolution for extreme accuracy in FPS games
- Second-generation control panel - Makes setup and customization easier than ever
- Onboard profile storage – Settings and profiles are stored directly on the M65 so you can take them with you
- Aluminum unibody design - Built for low weight, high rigidity, and optimal mass distribution
- Confirm all 15 buttons register, including the side buttons, top controls and thumb-area button.
- Test left- and right-clicks for missed inputs or unintended double-clicking.
- Scroll in both directions and check for skipped, reversed or erratic movement.
- Move the cable gently while connected; inspect the braid for fraying, kinks or signs of intermittent disconnection.
- Inspect the soft-touch surface for tackiness, peeling or other degradation. Check that side buttons are not stuck or unusually loose.
- If macros or remapping matter, verify that the software can configure the mouse and that the intended profile can be saved and played back. Do not rely on a seller’s claim that cursor movement works as proof that all features work.
- Ask about exposure to smoke, pets, moisture or long-term storage, and check what accessories are included.
- Prefer a return option, especially if your system is Windows 10 or 11 and you cannot test the full workflow beforehand. Do not pay a premium solely because the model is old or scarce.
Some owner posts describe side-button sticking or scroll-wheel problems, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a defect rate: one Corsair discussion, another Corsair discussion and a MouseReview discussion.
Modern alternatives by what you need
If the M90 appeals for a particular reason, choose an alternative by that priority rather than by button count alone. These families are comparison starting points, not claims that any one model matches the M90’s shape or feel; check the exact model’s current availability, software support and compatibility before buying.
Quick Recap
| What matters most | Alternative to investigate | Trade-off versus the M90 |
|---|---|---|
| MMO thumb-grid layout within Corsair’s ecosystem | Corsair SCIMITAR-family mice | A more current MMO-oriented option to investigate, but its shape and thumb-grid feel differ from the M90’s aluminum-heavy design. |
| A dedicated MMO thumb grid | Razer Naga family | A category-focused comparison, but button placement, shape, software and weight are different; it is not a direct M90 substitute. |
| Remapping for gaming and productivity | Logitech G gaming mice | Worth comparing for current configuration options, but availability changes and some historically popular models may be difficult to source. |
| Fast competitive FPS play | A current lightweight optical gaming mouse | Typically a better category fit for frequent repositioning, but it will not provide the M90’s many side controls or heavy feel. |
