Cost Comparison: Running a 24/7 YouTube Live Playlist on a Home NAS vs. a Cloud VPS

A fair NAS-versus-VPS comparison includes the same time period, stream quality, uptime, backups, electricity, network traffic, and maintenance—not just hardware or instance rent.

There is no universal cheaper option. A home NAS may cost less over a long period if you already own suitable hardware, have affordable electricity and reliable upload, and can handle maintenance. A cloud VPS avoids a large hardware purchase but adds recurring compute, storage, traffic, and administration costs. Compare both over the same number of months, at the same stream quality and uptime, and include backup and maintenance—not just the NAS sticker price or VPS instance fee.

This comparison is for a prerecorded playlist broadcast continuously as a YouTube Live stream. If you only mean playing an ordinary YouTube playlist, you do not necessarily need a NAS-hosted or VPS-hosted encoder.

What you are comparing

A NAS is storage and computing hardware at home. It can hold the videos and run an encoder or streaming service, but the stream depends on your home power, internet connection, upload capacity, and equipment. A VPS is a rented virtual server in a provider’s data center. It avoids buying a server, but you remain responsible for choosing a plan with adequate compute, storage, and outbound traffic, and for operating the software unless a separate managed service does that work.

Either route can deliver a continuous prerecorded YouTube Live stream. Neither is automatically a complete backup strategy: drive redundancy is not an offsite copy, and VPS snapshots or backups may cost extra.

  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Compare total cost over the same period

Choose a comparison period—such as 12 or 36 months—and use the same storage capacity, stream profile, broadcast hours, backup expectations, and maintenance assumptions for both options. Add one-time and recurring costs instead of comparing a NAS purchase with a single month of VPS rent.

Cost or constraint Home NAS Cloud VPS
Initial hardware Enclosure and disks; usable capacity depends on the selected drive layout and redundancy. Usually no comparable hardware purchase; the instance is billed while provisioned.
Recurring operation Electricity, any incremental internet or data-plan cost, and expected drive replacements. Instance charge, persistent storage, outbound transfer, and any traffic overage.
Backup and recovery Budget for a separate offsite backup and recovery; drive redundancy alone does not replace one. Check whether snapshots or separate backup storage are included or billed separately.
Work and risk Setup, updates, hardware failure, and home power or internet outages. OS and service updates, provider and account dependence, billing limits, and traffic monitoring.
Delivery capacity Home upload capacity and network availability must sustain the stream. Provider bandwidth, included transfer allowance, and route or region must support the stream.

VPS total for N months

Use the provider’s actual billing terms:

N × instance charge + storage + outbound transfer or overage + backups or snapshots + separately billed encoder or management service

Check whether the provider bills by calendar month, hour, or another interval; whether storage is included; and what happens when included traffic is exceeded. An advertised instance price alone does not establish the full cost.

Estimate stream traffic before selecting a VPS

Outbound traffic depends on the stream’s bitrate and actual broadcast uptime. As a rough conversion, a constant bitrate of 1 megabit per second transfers about 10.8 decimal gigabytes in 24 hours, before protocol overhead; multiply by your chosen bitrate and broadcast hours, then compare the result with the provider’s included traffic and overage rules. Providers may use decimal GB or binary GiB, so confirm the unit in the plan terms. This estimate is a planning calculation, not a provider quote.

Use the bitrate for the actual outgoing stream, not the size of the source video. A playlist’s stored-file size and its live-stream traffic are different cost lines.

Check that either connection can sustain the stream

YouTube’s official encoder guidance gives recommended H.264 bitrates of 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for encoder settings, not guarantees that a particular home connection or VPS plan will work. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, but the input stream still needs a stable connection and suitable encoder settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. That matters especially for a NAS using a residential connection, where other devices may compete for upload capacity. A VPS shifts the network path to the provider; it does not remove the need to verify bandwidth, transfer limits, and continuity. Test the selected profile and monitor stream health as YouTube advises in its live streaming tips.

Which option fits your circumstances?

A home NAS may suit you when

  • You already own suitable hardware, or its purchase is justified by other uses as well as streaming.
  • Your home upload service can sustain the encoder bitrate with headroom, and outages are acceptable or covered by a separate recovery plan.
  • You can manage updates, drive replacement, backups, and the streaming software yourself.
  • You want physical control of the equipment and files and have accounted for electricity and backup costs.

A cloud VPS may suit you when

  • You prefer not to buy and maintain a dedicated home server.
  • A provider can supply the required compute, persistent storage, and transfer allowance at a cost that works over your chosen period.
  • You are comfortable administering the server, or have included the cost of a managed service.
  • You want the stream’s network and power dependency to be outside your home, while accepting provider dependence and the need to monitor billing and service health.

These are trade-offs, not a fixed break-even rule. A 2026 SeedboxCompare search result reported a 46-month break-even for its particular 8 TB rented-media-box comparison including electricity; that scenario is not a like-for-like calculation for a YouTube streaming NAS versus a VPS. It should not be used to predict your own break-even.

Calculate your own break-even

  1. Set the period. Pick the same number of months for each option and decide whether you are comparing cash cost only or total cost including your time.
  2. Set equivalent requirements. Specify usable storage, resolution and frame rate, encoder bitrate, expected broadcast uptime, and backup and recovery expectations.
  3. Collect actual prices. For a NAS, price the enclosure, disks, backup, and any required network upgrade. For a VPS, use the chosen provider’s instance, storage, transfer, overage, and backup terms for your region.
  4. Measure or calculate operation. Measure NAS power draw and apply your local electricity rate. Estimate VPS traffic from bitrate and broadcast hours, checking the provider’s GB or GiB units.
  5. Include work and failure costs. Allow for setup and maintenance time, expected replacements, and the consequences or recovery costs of power, internet, drive, server, or provider failures.
  6. Compare like with like. Total each option over the same period. Only then calculate a break-even point; it changes if storage, uptime, backup level, region, or stream quality changes.

Another option: a managed cloud loop

If the goal is simply to keep a prerecorded playlist live on YouTube, StreamNeo is #1 among the options discussed here: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.
