A 24/7 ambient rain stream can cost about $7.47 to $24.91 a month in electricity on a continuously running PC drawing 60–200 watts, using the 2025 U.S. residential average electricity price. That is an illustration, not a typical-PC measurement. A cloud service may charge a fixed hosting fee or usage-based video fees, and those models do different jobs. For a rain loop sent to YouTube, compare your PC with a managed YouTube looping service—not with a cloud platform that also delivers video directly to viewers.
How to compare the real costs
First decide what “cloud” means for your setup. A fair comparison uses the same stream hours, resolution, frame rate, number of streams, storage needs, and reliability expectations on both sides.
- Managed YouTube loop host: hosts prerecorded videos or playlists and sends a continuous stream to YouTube, often with a fixed plan price.
- Cloud virtual machine (VM): a rented server runs encoder software and sends an ingest stream to YouTube. Its bill depends on the VM and any other services you use.
- Video platform with viewer delivery: processes and delivers video to viewers itself. This is a different workload from sending a source stream to YouTube, which handles viewer playback.
Unless you explicitly want to build and operate your own video delivery system, do not add a separate content delivery network (CDN) charge to a PC-to-YouTube comparison. Also decide whether to count setup time, home internet service, hardware wear, taxes, backup power, and the cost of equipment bought solely for streaming. An already-owned PC that would otherwise be on has a different incremental cost from a computer running only for the stream.
Calculate your PC’s electricity cost
Use average power measured at the wall for the whole computer, not the wattage printed on its power supply. Multiply that draw by your local electricity rate:

Monthly electricity cost = monthly kWh × local price per kWh

For a 30-day month running continuously, the calculation simplifies to watts × 0.72 × your tariff in dollars per kWh. A plug-in electricity monitor can help measure wall draw; use the average while the computer is doing its actual streaming workload.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports a 2025 annual average residential electricity price of 17.30¢ per kWh. At that rate, these are calculated scenarios—not measurements of particular PCs:

The EIA’s 2025 average across all customer types was 13.63¢/kWh; residential prices varied by state from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii. Use the rate on your current bill for a personal estimate: electricity prices vary by location and change over time.
What cloud services charge for
Managed YouTube looping
A managed service is the closest cloud comparison when the goal is to keep prerecorded rain videos looping on YouTube without leaving a home PC on. As an example, Streamstead’s product page, accessed October 3, 2026, listed its Core plan at $29/month for one livestream and 100 GB storage, Pro at $69/month for three livestreams and 300 GB, and Studio at $149/month for ten livestreams and 1 TB. Those are vendor-advertised prices accessed on that date; taxes may apply, and check current plan terms and limits before deciding. Its FAQ describes a service for uploaded video and playlists, rather than live webcams, production switching, or interactive events. YouTube’s verified encoder list includes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos; inclusion establishes the product category, not current pricing.

VM running an encoder
A VM can run encoder software and send a stream to YouTube, just as an encoder can run on a local computer. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers. Compare the VM’s actual compute, storage, and any required network charges with your PC’s measured electricity; do not assume that renting a VM also means paying for a separate viewer-facing CDN when YouTube is delivering playback.
Video delivery platforms
A platform that processes and delivers playback directly to viewers has a different cost model. Cloudflare Stream says live and on-demand video are billed by minutes stored and minutes delivered; ingest and encoding are free, and bandwidth is included in delivery pricing. Its pricing page, last updated September 8, 2026, lists delivery at $1 per 1,000 minutes and storage capacity in $5/month increments per 1,000 minutes. For example, it says two people watching 30 minutes each produce 60 delivered minutes, or $0.06. A live broadcast with no viewers has no delivery-minute charge, though retaining a recording uses storage. Confirm that this model fits your intended YouTube workflow before comparing it with a dedicated YouTube loop host.

AWS’s live-stream deployment guide illustrates why operating your own delivery stack can be a different—and potentially much larger—expense. In one AWS example, about 1,000 viewers watching a one-hour 540p event were estimated at $69.74 total: $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution. Its separate example for 100 viewers watching 200 hours in a month estimated $3,838.69 under its specified 1080p service and traffic assumptions. AWS cautions that the first example depends on assumptions and may cost more than actual usage. Neither estimate is a quote for a rain stream; they show that viewer delivery can outweigh encoding costs when you operate the distribution service yourself.

- Your PC may be cheaper on the bill if it is already owned, draws little power, and your electricity tariff is low. Count only the power that is additional to what the machine would otherwise use.
- A fixed-fee host may be worth the premium if avoiding a continuously running home computer, monitoring, or manual recovery matters more than minimizing the electricity line item. Compare its included stream count, storage, supported workflow, and recovery behavior with your needs.
- A viewer-billed platform needs an audience estimate if it delivers playback itself. Calculate delivered minutes as viewers × viewing minutes, and account separately for stored recordings where applicable.
- Buying a PC only for the stream changes the calculation. Add purchase and replacement costs rather than comparing a cloud plan only with electricity.
Reliability is also part of the trade-off: a local stream depends on the PC, home power, and internet connection staying available. A cloud option moves the running workload away from home, but its plan scope and recovery behavior still need checking.

Costs that can change the answer
- Electricity tariff: the U.S. examples above are not a substitute for your own bill rate.
- Power draw: use measured wall draw under stream load, not the PSU rating or a guess based on PC components.
- Storage and number of streams: cloud plan limits can change the relevant price even when a headline monthly fee looks attractive.
- Reliability and labor: interruptions, monitoring, setup, and the time needed to recover a stream have value even when they do not appear on an electricity bill.
- Copyright and YouTube rules: only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. YouTube’s live-stream settings and policies apply regardless of whether the encoder is local or cloud-hosted. A 24/7 loop is not a substitute for permission to use music, sound recordings, or visuals.
