Possibly—but former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered possibilities, not a prediction that a specific game will match Grand Theft Auto VI. He floated Rockstar’s eventual GTA 7 and unnamed Chinese companies as potential routes to a successor or competitor, while leaving “success” undefined.
What did Shuhei Yoshida say about GTA 6’s future competition?
In a recent episode of The Vergecast, Yoshida was asked whether another game could match GTA VI’s success. GamingBolt reports his answer: “After 15 years, maybe GTA 7, we’ll see,” followed by the possibility that Chinese companies might “try to emulate or compete” after what he described as a 15-year gap. He added, “no one should underestimate the power of these Chinese companies.” GamingBolt’s report characterized the comments as joking.
The conditional wording matters. Yoshida did not say a challenger is certain to emerge, identify a Chinese studio or game, or define what “match” means. It could refer to commercial performance, public attention, cultural reach or some combination; his reported remarks do not settle that question.
What are the two possibilities he raised?
Rockstar makes a GTA 7
Yoshida’s first possibility was another Grand Theft Auto from Rockstar, perhaps after roughly 15 years. That is a speculative timeline, not a confirmed release window or announcement about GTA 7.

A Chinese company competes or emulates
His second possibility was that a Chinese company might try to emulate GTA VI or compete with it. He named no company, project or approach, so there is no specific rival to compare with Rockstar or GTA VI.
What does the evidence say about GTA VI’s reach?
Promotional attention has been substantial, but the reported figures measure a showcase and its associated audience activity—not game sales or a future competitor’s prospects.

- GamingBolt reported that Ampere Analysis estimated more than 100,000 new US Netflix sign-ups when the GTA VI Extended Look went live in the United States. The report described a six-hour exclusive window and said this was Netflix’s third-highest subscriber acquisition in the US that year. These are attributed estimates about sign-ups, not purchases of GTA VI. GamingBolt’s coverage of the estimate.
- Netflix, as reported by GamingBolt, said the Extended Look received 31.1 million views in its first week and topped its English film charts in 87 of the 93 countries tracked. Those are showcase-viewing figures, not a measure of game sales. GamingBolt’s report on the showcase and marketing plan.
Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut has also described the project’s ambition in comments GamingBolt attributed to a Game Informer cover story. Garbut said the team sought to increase detail, scope, interaction and density rather than trade one off against another. That speaks to the scale Rockstar is aiming for, but it does not establish how GTA VI will perform or whether another studio can reproduce its impact. GamingBolt’s report on Garbut’s comments.
