It could—but that is a pre-release possibility, not a verdict. Previews describe Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s returning DMZ as a substantial extraction mode built around persistent progression, curated story missions, changing operations, and threats from both AI and other players. Those plans give it a credible route to challenge ARC Raiders. Whether they make it the best extraction shooter of all time depends on how the systems work in play, and that cannot be established before launch.
Why MW4 DMZ has a plausible shot
The ambition is larger than a simple return of the earlier DMZ beta. In a developer briefing reported by GamesBeat, Infinity Ward framed the mode as a game within Modern Warfare, connected to the campaign. Players enter the Hajin exclusion zone to secure, capture, or neutralize abandoned military technology. Studio multiplayer creative director Geoff Smith described the ambition this way: “It’s really more than just a third mode. It’s a full-featured game inside Modern Warfare.” That is the developer’s characterization, not proof of how complete or compelling the finished mode will be.
Preview reporting describes a loop with more structure and persistence than a match-based scavenging run alone: players can pursue missions, collect gear, develop an operator, and decide whether to keep exploring or extract. The promise is a mode where each deployment can matter to a longer campaign of progression, while other squads and AI make staying in the zone risky.
What previews say the mode will include
Destructoid’s June 2026 preview, based on a developer presentation and interviews rather than play of the newest version, describes three planned playlist types. GamesBeat’s briefing report also describes story missions, dynamic operations, free runs, environmental exploration, escalating AI, and changing weather. These are announced or previewed systems, not independently verified launch features.

Its account describes Hajin as a zone with other players, AI combatants, convoys, air activity, proximity chat, and a stealth system that may let players avoid detection. Weather can worsen during a match, and threats are reported to escalate with player activity. On death, players may lose gear; an M.I.A. system is described as allowing recovery of a lost operator for in-game currency. The exact rules and balance of these systems have not been confirmed in hands-on coverage of the newest build.
The design changes address an old DMZ limitation
In an interview with GamingTrend, studio multiplayer creative director Joe Cecot said the previous mode left desired persistence and deeper systems unrealized. He described the new approach as putting more emphasis on purposeful looting and curated story missions. That distinction matters: an extraction mode can have a compelling risk-and-reward loop, but long-term goals and useful loot can give players reasons to return beyond winning a fight or escaping with equipment.

The reported bounty system is intended as a possible check on aggressive player hunting. Its effect is uncertain. A bounty could give hunted squads a way to turn pressure into an objective, but whether it discourages repeated attacks or simply rewards them will depend on how the incentives work in actual matches. GamingTrend presents the deterrent as an intended possibility, not a demonstrated outcome.
What would decide the comparison with ARC Raiders
The available reporting makes ARC Raiders a comparison point, but it does not provide a reliable side-by-side evaluation. A meaningful claim that MW4 DMZ has surpassed it—or any other extraction shooter—needs evidence from the released mode, not a feature list. These are the tests that matter:

- Moment-to-moment play: Gunplay, onboarding, performance, and the experience for solo players versus squads need direct play to judge. The cited previews do not establish a fair comparison on these points.
Until those questions can be answered through release coverage and comparative play, “could dethrone” is the accurate framing. The feature set makes the challenge conceivable; it does not establish a winner, player migration, or a change in ARC Raiders’ standing.

PC Gamer reported on May 28, 2026, that DMZ was returning with an October launch window; reporting at the time of the June previews gave October 23, 2026, as the planned Modern Warfare 4 launch date. That date is still in the future as of October 7, 2026. The date and mode details therefore describe plans, not a released product. A post-launch comparison should check the final feature set, how the systems behave across repeated runs, and whether the experience holds up for players with different levels of skill and time.
