Possibly: an ESPN preview projected Washington receiver Stefon Diggs to reach at least 85 receiving yards against Indianapolis in London. That was a pregame forecast, not a guaranteed outcome—and it was notably higher than his 55-yard season high at the time.
What was the 85-yard projection based on?
In an October 2, 2026 preview of Colts at Commanders, ESPN analyst Seth Walder projected Diggs to record at least 85 receiving yards. The preview put his season high at 55 yards, so the forecast called for a substantially bigger outing than he had yet produced that season. The ABC7 New York page republishing the ESPN preview reported the figures.
The case for a larger game leaned on Diggs’ reported involvement in Washington’s passing offense: he was targeted on 33% of his routes and averaged 1.8 yards per route run in the preview’s snapshot. Those measures indicate involvement and production per route, but do not guarantee a particular number of targets or yards in one game.
Why did Indianapolis look like a favorable matchup?
The preview cited Indianapolis as allowing 417.3 total yards per game, then the highest figure in the NFL, according to ESPN Research. It also suggested Diggs could exploit slot coverage. That offered a plausible matchup rationale for the projection, but a team’s total yards allowed is not the same as yards allowed specifically to slot receivers, and the preview did not establish that the coverage would produce a Diggs advantage.

How did the London game and quarterback situation factor in?
The matchup was scheduled as Colts at Commanders in London, with kickoff listed for 9:30 a.m. ET on NFL Network. The preview’s projection was tied to that particular game, not a general expectation for Diggs’ role throughout the season.
An October 2 podcast-directory listing said Jayden Daniels was out and Marcus Mariota would make his second straight start. Because that listing is not an official team or league injury report, it should be treated as secondary availability context rather than definitive confirmation. Quarterback availability matters to any passing-game outlook, but the available preview details do not quantify how a Daniels absence or Mariota start would change Diggs’ expected production.

What can—and can’t—be concluded?
Before the game, the route-target rate, yards per route run, and Indianapolis’ reported defensive yardage average gave Walder a basis for expecting a stronger receiving performance than Diggs’ season high to date. They support a conditional case for a bigger role, not certainty that he would reach 85 yards. The cited preview sources do not establish Diggs’ actual receiving result in the London game, so the forecast should not be presented as an outcome.
Washington also faced a threat on the ground: defensive coordinator Daronte Jones described Colts running back Jonathan Taylor as having “game-breaking speed” and being physical. That is relevant to the broader matchup, but it is not evidence about Diggs’ receiving role.
