In Counter-Strike 2, an entry fragger creates first contact and space, support helps the push with utility and follow-up, a lurker pressures away from the main group, and an AWPer uses the AWP to contest sightlines or seek picks. These are flexible team conventions, not fixed classes or an official Valve role taxonomy: players can take different responsibilities as the round plan and situation change.
What the four roles do
Entry fragger: create first contact and space
The entry player is the first teammate to challenge a contested area or enter a site. ESL’s role guide calls the entry “The first point of contact. The head of the spear.” The goal is to create room for teammates by confronting defenders and revealing where resistance is—not simply to get the first kill.
An entry’s round can be useful even when they die, provided that contact creates information, space, or a chance for teammates to trade the elimination. The value depends on whether the team can act on what the entry reveals.
Support: make the push actionable
Support helps teammates execute and sustain an attack. That can mean throwing flashes or smokes, coordinating a boost, following the entry, or being positioned to trade. ESL’s guide describes support as adapting to the team’s strengths and weaknesses; a historical CS:GO role table also describes utility use to cover and aid an entry push, alongside trading kills.

Support is not synonymous with “the player who gets fewer kills.” Utility has to arrive at the right time: a flash should help a teammate take contact, and follow-up players should be close enough to capitalize or trade. Using utility without a coordinated follow-up may leave the entry isolated.
Lurker: pressure space away from the main group
A lurker operates apart from the main group to gather information, threaten another area, exploit a gap, or catch opponents rotating. The role rewards patience and timing: the lurker needs to recognize when defenders move and when the team’s main action gives them an opportunity. Separation has a cost. If the lurker is too detached for the round’s timing, the main group may lack support when it makes contact. There is no single correct distance or timing for every map and situation; the lurker’s pressure needs to stay connected to the team’s plan.
AWPer: control sightlines with the AWP
An AWPer specializes in using the AWP, a sniper rifle, and chooses positions around sightlines. They might seek an aggressive opening pick or hold an angle passively to make it difficult for opponents to cross. ESL emphasizes positioning and game sense alongside aim, while the Steam Community guide distinguishes aggressive picks from passive angle-holding.

The job is about influencing where opponents can safely move, not just landing shots. A dedicated AWPer is not required in every round; whether the team assigns one depends on its plan and circumstances.
How the roles work together
On one possible coordinated attack, the entry takes first contact, support uses utility and stays ready to follow or trade, the AWPer contests a relevant sightline, and the lurker applies pressure elsewhere or punishes a rotation. This is an example of how the responsibilities can complement one another, not a mandatory sequence or a fixed four-player lineup.

Who does what can change with the side, map, economy, round plan, and opponent behavior. A player can take different jobs in different rounds, and the same player may cover more than one responsibility. ESL recommends practicing a chosen role, communicating plans, and staying flexible.

Before the round, agree on who makes first contact, who supplies the utility and follows, which sightline the AWP should contest, and what the lurker is trying to pressure or learn. That gives each player a purpose without turning a role label into a rigid assignment. During the round, communicate what has changed: a delayed push, an unexpected defender, or a rotation can make the original division of jobs less useful.

There is no evidence in the cited role guides establishing a universal ranking of these jobs. They contribute in different ways: first-contact risk and space creation, utility and trade support, off-pack pressure and timing, and AWP sightline control and pick potential. Judge a role by whether its work helps the team execute the plan, not by a single scoreboard number.
What these role names mean—and do not mean
These labels are common tactical language used to explain team responsibilities, not roles mandated by Valve. The academic role table cited in the discussion concerns Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), so it provides historical background rather than a definitive description of CS2. ESL’s 2023 guide and community guides are explanatory sources, not official game documentation.
