Valve revealed Counter-Strike 2 in March 2023 and later released it as a free upgrade to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). The “big reveal” is no longer upcoming: Counter-Strike 2 is the current chapter in the series, built on Valve’s Source 2 engine and still receiving updates.
When was Counter-Strike 2 revealed and released?
Valve announced the game in March 2023 under the title The Next Era of Counter-Strike. The announcement established Counter-Strike 2 as the series’ next era. Valve’s Steam product page describes it as a free upgrade to CS:GO. The page retains the original app’s 21 August 2012 release date; that is not the launch date of Counter-Strike 2.
What did Valve say was changing?
Valve describes Counter-Strike 2 as built on Source 2 and highlights a broad set of technical and gameplay updates. These are the publisher’s feature descriptions, not independent benchmark results or a guarantee that every player will see a performance improvement.
- Rendering and tools: Valve cites physically based rendering and upgraded Workshop tools.
- Networking and feel: Valve says gameplay is tick-rate-independent and points to updated networking.
- Maps and effects: The product page lists overhauled maps, redesigned visual effects and audio, and dynamic smoke grenades.
- Competitive features: CS Ratings, Premier mode, and global and regional leaderboards are listed as part of the game.
Those points distinguish the announced successor from a simple name change, but Valve’s listing does not provide a like-for-like performance test against CS:GO.

How do you play Counter-Strike 2?
Valve lists Counter-Strike 2 as free to play on Steam. The listing also offers Prime Status as a paid digital account upgrade; it is not a separate physical edition of the game.
