You can use ChatGPT to generate a small playable game quickly, but “under five minutes” is a best-case demo—not a promise that a finished game will appear instantly. In a December 2024 demonstration, a writer used GPT-4o to create a basic Breakout game with Python and Pygame, then asked for a score display and replay function. GPT-4o was retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, so use a current ChatGPT coding model for the same workflow; OpenAI says GPT-4o remains available through its API. OpenAI’s retirement notice explains the change.
What the five-minute claim really means
A simple Breakout prototype is a good first AI-assisted game because it can fit in one Python file and demonstrates keyboard input, a game loop, movement, collisions, scoring, and restart behavior. The original author reported getting a playable version in under five minutes, then improving it with follow-up prompts. That timing does not necessarily include installing Python and Pygame, copying and saving the code, or resolving setup errors. It also does not describe a polished game with custom art, sound, levels, or distribution packaging. The original demonstration is a report of one workflow, not a guaranteed result.
What you need
- ChatGPT: generates and revises code. You do not need GPT-4o specifically; it is no longer selectable in ChatGPT.
- Python: runs the program locally. Download it from python.org.
- Pygame: provides the game window, drawing, input, and timing functions. See the Pygame documentation.
- A text editor: use Visual Studio Code or, on Windows, Notepad++.
- A terminal: Command Prompt on Windows, or a terminal application on macOS or Linux, to install Pygame and launch the game.
ChatGPT supplies source code; Python and Pygame run it on your computer. The editor saves the file, and the terminal makes errors visible if the program fails. ChatGPT’s interactive code blocks and previews for some diagrams and mini-apps do not mean every desktop Pygame program will run inside the chat. Ask for a complete Breakout game
Start a ChatGPT conversation and provide a specific request. Defining controls, restart behavior, and dependency limits up front is more useful than asking only for “a game.”

Create a complete, single-file Breakout game in Python using Pygame.
Requirements:
- Use only Pygame and Python’s standard library.
- Create the game window and draw the paddle, ball, bricks, score, and lives.
- Move the paddle with the left and right arrow keys.
- Make the ball bounce off the walls, paddle, and bricks.
- Remove a brick when the ball hits it.
- Display the score.
- Show a game-over screen with the final score.
- Press R to restart the game after game over.
- Press Escape to quit.
- Keep the code beginner-friendly and include short comments.
- Return only the complete code in one code block, followed by concise instructions for saving and running it.The first result may need correction or adjustment. Ask for the entire updated file whenever you request a change, rather than a code fragment whose location may be unclear.
Install Pygame and run the file
- Install Python. Download it from the official Python downloads page. On Windows, enable the option to add Python to PATH if the installer offers it.
- Open a terminal and install Pygame. Run
python -m pip install pygame. This ties the installation to the Python interpreter invoked withpython. If that command is not recognized on Windows, trypy -m pip install pygame. - Create a project folder. For example, use
DocumentsChatGPT-GamesBreakouton Windows. Keep your project out of Python’s installation directory. - Save the generated code. In your editor, create a file named
Breakout.pyin the project folder. Check that it ends in.py, not.py.txt. - Open a terminal in that folder and launch the game. Run
python Breakout.py; on Windows,py Breakout.pymay work instead. A successful basic version should open a game window with a paddle, ball, bricks, and score. Use the controls specified in your prompt.
Improve the prototype one change at a time
Once the game launches, request one feature at a time so it is easier to spot what caused a new bug. For example:
Add a visible score counter in the upper-left corner. Return the complete Breakout.py file.When all bricks are destroyed, show a victory screen and allow R to restart. Return the complete file.Add three lives. Reset the ball after losing a life and end the game when all lives are gone. Return the complete file.Add a pause function toggled by the P key. Return the complete file.
After each change, run the game again. The first successful launch is a baseline, not evidence that the score, collisions, restart state, or difficulty are all working as intended.

Fix common setup and code problems
Pygame is missing
If you see ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pygame', Pygame may have been installed for a different Python interpreter. Use the same launcher for installation and execution, then verify the import:

Python is not recognized
On Windows, try py --version, then use py -m pip install pygame and py Breakout.py. If the launcher is also unavailable, install or repair Python and enable its PATH option if offered.

The window closes or no error is visible
Launch the program from a terminal instead of double-clicking Breakout.py. This keeps error output visible. A game that exits as soon as it ends may also need a persistent game-over screen and an R restart handler; include those requirements in the prompt.
The ball passes through bricks or movement behaves strangely
Fast movement can expose flaws in simple collision checks. Give ChatGPT the symptom and request rectangle-based collision checks, a correction to the ball’s position after impact, and logic that prevents the same brick from being handled repeatedly in one frame. If the paddle or ball does not move, ask it to inspect the event loop, input handling, coordinate updates, and whether a position is being reset each frame.

Ask: Return the entire corrected Breakout.py file, including every import, function, and the main game loop. Do not use placeholders or ellipses. Then replace the old file contents with the complete version.

Use an error message to get a targeted fix
Copy the full traceback from the terminal and include the relevant current code. Do not paraphrase an error if you can paste it exactly.

Identify the cause, explain it briefly, and return the complete corrected file. Do not omit any unchanged code.Keep the first version simple and review the code
To improve the odds of a clean first run, ask for a game drawn with Pygame rectangles and circles, with no downloaded images, external fonts, audio files, or packages other than Pygame. Inspect the generated code before running it. Be especially cautious about code that deletes or changes files, runs shell commands, downloads and executes unknown files, or requests administrator privileges; none of those actions is needed for this Breakout prototype.
Expect a simple window and geometric shapes rather than a finished commercial game. Generated code may need debugging, and the first draft may have awkward controls, unbalanced speed, or a restart that fails to reset every value. Custom art, sound, multiple levels, mobile controls, multiplayer, and distribution are separate work.

Want a game that opens in a browser?
Python and Pygame are a good fit for a small desktop prototype. If you want to avoid a Python installation or share one file that opens in a browser, ask for an HTML and JavaScript version instead:
Create a complete single-file Breakout game using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript.
Requirements:
- Put all HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in one file.
- Use a canvas element.
- Support keyboard controls and touch controls.
- Display score and lives.
- Add a restart button.
- Do not use external libraries.
- Return a complete, runnable HTML document.A browser version has its own event-handling and compatibility details, but it avoids the separate Python and Pygame installation steps.
Can the same method make other games?
Yes. Once you can describe the rules and controls, you can ask ChatGPT for a small Pong, Snake, maze, quiz, card, or space-shooter prototype. As the number of systems grows—levels, enemies, inventory, saving, or multiplayer—the project needs more design, testing, and iteration, so the five-minute framing becomes less realistic.
For a first Breakout prototype, the useful result is a quick way to turn a clear specification into something you can run and inspect. The original workflow used GPT-4o in 2024; ChatGPT model availability has since changed, but the local Python/Pygame steps remain the same in broad outline.
