This guide covers the safest way to begin in Pywel, how to build reliable combat habits, where exploration fits into progression, and how to choose a story-first or exploration-first route. Button prompts and graphics options differ by platform, so use the on-screen controls for your version rather than a platform-specific mapping from another player.
How to start Crimson Desert
Begin by treating the opening hours as a movement and combat tutorial rather than a race to the next objective. Before taking on a difficult encounter, practice the actions you will use constantly: guarding, dodging, grappling, ranged attacks and environmental movement.
Opening checklist
- Confirm the control prompts and performance or display mode for your platform.
- Test guard and dodge timing against ordinary enemies before attempting an elite fight.
- Try a grapple and a ranged attack so you know their reach and recovery animations.
- Climb nearby surfaces and look for gliding routes; traversal is part of how Pywel is designed to be read.
- Open every newly available path on the way to a story objective instead of assuming it is decorative.
If an encounter feels overwhelming, leave it, explore nearby terrain and return after finding an ability, item or alternate approach. The game ties exploration to character growth, so retreating can be progression rather than failure.
Which version should you play?
| Platform | Best fit | Ownership and setup notes |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Players who prefer a console controller and the PlayStation ecosystem | Physical and digital releases are available; display and performance choices depend on the installed version and console settings. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Players already using Xbox accounts, controllers and console features | Use the in-game prompts and graphics options for your specific Series console. |
| Steam or Epic Games Store (PC) | Players who want adjustable PC display and input options | Keyboard, mouse and controller prompts can differ; check the active input device before following a combat tutorial. |
| Apple Mac | Players in the supported Mac ecosystem | Performance and input options depend on the Mac configuration and game build. |
| ROG Xbox Ally | Players who want a handheld PC-style Xbox experience | Expect handheld-specific input and performance choices; verify the current build’s recommended settings. |
Is there a PS5 disc version?
Yes. The PlayStation release includes both physical and digital editions. If you need a disc, look specifically for the Crimson Desert PS5 physical game and confirm the region, edition and current stock before buying.

Crimson Desert combat fundamentals
Combat is designed around changing tools, not staying on one weapon. Pearl Abyss describes it as letting players “chain combos using swords, axes, spears, ranged weapons, and hand-to-hand combat, kicks, and grapples.” In practice, use movement and utility attacks to create openings, then commit to a weapon string while the enemy is vulnerable.
Build a basic combat loop
- Read the approach: keep enough space to see an enemy’s wind-up and identify whether the attack can be guarded or should be dodged.
- Defend first: guard when the timing is safe; dodge when an attack, position or group size makes guarding risky.
- Create an opening: use a kick, grapple, ranged hit or repositioning move when a foe is exposed.
- Chain a weapon combo: switch between sword, axe, spear or another available weapon according to distance and target behavior.
- Disengage: stop attacking before you are surrounded. A short retreat is often safer than forcing the final hit.
Use every attack category
- Swords: practical for close-range strings and quick punish windows.
- Axes: useful when a heavier hit is worth the slower commitment.
- Spears: help maintain spacing and reach against threats that punish standing directly beside them.
- Ranged weapons: let you start an encounter, pressure a distant target or exploit a brief opening.
- Hand-to-hand attacks and kicks: interrupt your normal rhythm and can help when a weapon string is unsafe.
- Grapples: provide another way to control an opening or alter your position; learn their range before relying on them in a crowd.
Do not assume the strongest-looking attack is always the best choice. A short chain that ends safely is more dependable than a long animation that leaves you exposed to a second enemy.
Exploration and traversal in Pywel
Pywel is an open world containing wilderness, cities and ruins. Climbing and gliding are not merely scenic movement: exploration can unlock abilities that are usable in combat, so routes often double as progression paths.
Rank #2
- A VAST, SEAMLESS WORLD — Explore the continent of Pywel as a fully seamless open world, where countless destinies unfold across uncharted lands filled with danger, beauty, and discovery.
- RELENTLESS ACTION, BRUTAL COMBAT — Fight for survival in fast‑paced, visceral battles using swords, spears, bows, elemental abilities, and powerful skills, where a single moment can determine victory or defeat.
- DAWNING FATE — Witness the fragile balance between rival factions shatter as Kliff and the Greymanes are drawn into a brutal conflict that reshapes the fate of the continent.
- THOSE WHO PROTECT AND THOSE WHO TORMENT — Confront the Black Bears and their ruthless leader Myurdin as allies fall, loyalties fracture, and Pywel descends further into chaos.
- THE BEGINNING OF A NEW JOURNEY — Set out to rebuild the Greymanes, reclaim a lost homeland, and pursue vengeance along a path that reveals deeper truths about power, war, and destiny.
How to read a route
- Check climbable surfaces around blocked roads, cliffs and ruined structures.
- Look from high ground for gliding opportunities and alternate approaches to settlements or objectives.
- Enter ruins and side paths when they become reachable; a newly acquired movement skill may make previously impossible routes viable.
- Mark difficult areas mentally, then return after gaining a new ability instead of repeatedly forcing the same encounter.
- Speak with relevant NPCs and inspect rewards before leaving an area.
When you reach a dead end, ask whether it is a combat problem or a traversal problem. If enemies are manageable but the route remains inaccessible, continue the story or search nearby for the ability that changes your movement options.
Progression: what to upgrade or acquire first
The most reliable early priority is not a single named upgrade; it is anything that expands movement, survivability or the number of ways you can start an encounter. Exact ability names and unlock conditions can change with updates, and the live game may tie them to items or NPC encounters.
Exploration-first progression checklist
- Inspect every newly opened path after a major story or ability gain.
- Talk to NPCs connected to the area and check whether an encounter offers a skill, item or equipment reward.
- Collect rewards before moving on; an unopened reward can be mistaken for a missing upgrade.
- Test the new ability immediately in traversal and in a low-risk fight.
- Revisit previously blocked ruins, climbs and gliding routes.
This loop compounds: a movement ability can reveal a reward, the reward can improve combat options, and those options can make a previously dangerous route practical.
Rank #3
- Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game set in the beautiful yet brutal continent of Pywel. Take on the role of the Greymane Kliff and embark on a journey across the continent to reclaim everything youve lost. Explore uncharted lands, encounter mysterious factions, and experience firsthand a world that is as breathtaking as it is merciless.
Story-first or exploration-first?
| Approach | How to play | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Story-first | Follow the marked objective, stop for essential tutorials and return to optional routes later. | You reach major objectives sooner but may postpone abilities, items and alternate paths. |
| Exploration-first | Detour through climbable terrain, ruins, settlements and NPC encounters before advancing the main route. | You discover more progression opportunities early, but the next story objective takes longer to reach. |
Choose story-first if you want a clean narrative route or are learning the controls. Choose exploration-first if an area feels underpowered, if you enjoy environmental puzzles or if you want to uncover abilities before a difficult mission.
Optional activities and changing mechanics
Keep optional content separate from the critical path until you know what the current build supports. Side activities, horseback combat, quest order and ability names may change through patches. If a guide, video or menu description does not match your game, trust the current in-game objective, control prompt and patch notes rather than forcing an older route.
Recommended Free Tools
When to postpone an optional encounter
- The area contains enemies far beyond the threat level of nearby story objectives.
- You can see a climb, glide or grapple route but do not yet have the required movement option.
- The reward is unclear and the detour would leave you without supplies for a main mission.
- An update has changed the objective text or encounter behavior.
Quick troubleshooting guide
“I cannot reach the objective.”
Search vertically. Check climbable walls, rooftops, ledges and gliding launch points before circling the same ground route. If the path is still inaccessible, continue the nearest story objective and return after unlocking another ability.
Rank #4
- A boundless connected, wide world - countless destinies await you on the seamlessly designed open world continent Pywel
- Versatile action, merciless battles - There is no predetermined solution on the battlefield of Crimson Desert
- The beginning of fate - In Pailune on the continent of Pywel there is a fragile balance between different powers
- Contents: the game, "deluxe package", "Khaled Shield" DLC, Steelbook, character cards, patches, etc.
“I keep losing close-range fights.”
Shorten your combos, guard or dodge the first attack, then use a kick, grapple or ranged hit to create space. Fighting one target at a time is safer than committing to a long chain in the middle of a group.
“A guide’s controls do not match mine.”
Use the prompts shown by your platform and active input device. PlayStation, Xbox, PC and handheld layouts can present different button labels, and patches can revise mappings or options.
“An ability or side activity is missing.”
Check the current quest text, speak with nearby relevant NPCs and verify that the game is updated. Do not assume a preview, older video or another platform’s route represents your current build.
