Yes, CrossOver 25 could let some gamers stop installing Windows 11, but it cannot replace Windows for everyone. CodeWeavers’ compatibility layer runs many Windows games and launchers on macOS and Linux without a separate Windows installation. Whether it works for you depends on the exact game, launcher, graphics backend, hardware and operating-system version.
What CrossOver 25 actually changed
CodeWeavers launched CrossOver 25 on March 11, 2025. The release updated its Windows-compatibility stack with Wine 10.0, Wine Mono 9.4.0, vkd3d 1.14, MoltenVK 1.2.10 and D3DMetal 2.1. CodeWeavers described Wine 10.0 as containing more than 5,000 changes; that is a change count for Wine, not a count of newly playable games or a measured performance increase.
On macOS, CrossOver 25 also added DXMT, a Metal-based Direct3D 11 implementation. CrossOver Product Manager and QA Manager Meredith Johnson described DXMT as another option alongside wined3d, DXVK and D3DMetal. CodeWeavers said its QA team saw particularly good performance benefits on lower-spec Macs, but that is a vendor assessment rather than an independent benchmark.
The release also expanded storefront support. CodeWeavers reported improvements for Steam and support for GOG Galaxy and the Epic Games Store on macOS.

These are release claims, not guarantees for every Mac, Linux distribution, game patch, launcher version or graphics setting. Compatibility can change when a game, storefront, driver layer or operating system is updated.

Why compatibility is still a game-by-game question
Check the Compatibility Database first
CodeWeavers maintains a searchable Compatibility Database containing reports for Windows games and applications in CrossOver. Search for the exact title and read the current notes before buying a game or abandoning Windows. A game’s rating or report is evidence for a particular configuration, not a universal promise.
Steam may require extra steps
CodeWeavers’ Steam guidance explicitly notes that some titles need additional help. Installation instructions, launch options, bottle settings, graphics backends or workarounds may be required. A game appearing in the CrossOver 25 announcement does not remove the need to check its current Steam entry.

Anti-cheat and launchers can be decisive
The available evidence does not establish universal support for anti-cheat systems, multiplayer services or every third-party launcher. For an online game, confirm that its current launcher and anti-cheat configuration are supported before switching platforms.

That means CrossOver can remove Windows 11 from a compatible gaming setup, but the evidence does not support claiming equivalent frame rates, universal compatibility or a measured Windows-replacement rate.

Hardware and operating-system requirements
Mac
CodeWeavers’ official Mac requirements list Intel Macs and Apple Silicon Macs beginning with M1, running macOS 10.15 or later. The product documentation includes a version-specific compatibility table, so check your exact macOS release rather than relying on the broad minimum.
CrossOver 25 is also no longer the newest major release: CodeWeavers’ changelog lists CrossOver 26.0.0 in February 2026. For macOS 26 Tahoe, the current product page specifies CrossOver 25.1.1 or later; an original 25.0 installation should not be assumed to support Tahoe.

Linux
The Linux guide lists x86-compatible PC hardware and separate software and graphics requirements. It cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed for Linux distributions released after the CrossOver version you are using. Confirm both your distribution and graphics stack before migrating.

- Your main games have current, favorable CrossOver reports.
- You use a Mac or Linux system you already prefer for work or everyday use.
- Your games do not depend on unsupported anti-cheat, launchers or Windows-only utilities.
- You are comfortable following title-specific setup instructions and troubleshooting updates.
- You value avoiding a separate Windows installation more than having guaranteed native compatibility.
When keeping Windows 11 is safer
- A must-play game is absent from the Compatibility Database or has unresolved issues.
- You rely on competitive multiplayer, anti-cheat or a launcher whose support is uncertain.
- You need predictable support for a large library rather than a small set of verified titles.
- You require Windows-only creative, productivity or modding tools alongside games.
- You cannot accept troubleshooting after game or operating-system updates.
A practical migration checklist
- List the games you actually play, including their launchers and multiplayer requirements.
- Search each exact title in CodeWeavers’ current Compatibility Database.
- Read recent notes for your Mac model or Linux distribution, graphics hardware and game version.
- Install CrossOver and test one representative game before moving your whole library.
- Record any required bottle, launcher, graphics-backend or launch-option settings.
- Recheck compatibility after major game, storefront, macOS, Linux or CrossOver updates.
- Keep access to Windows for titles that remain unsupported instead of treating CrossOver as a universal replacement.
So, could it help gamers ditch Windows 11?
For a curated library, often yes. CrossOver 25’s updated Wine and graphics components, DXMT option on macOS, broader launcher support and vendor-reported game improvements make it a stronger alternative than earlier releases for some players. But it remains a compatibility layer, not a promise that every Windows game will run. The decisive test is your own title list and the current per-game reports—not the CrossOver 25 version number alone.
