Crunch is not an unavoidable law of making games. Developers have long reported extended hours, and survey respondents most often point to choices and conditions around scheduling, changing scope, expectations, staffing, and management. That does not mean every overtime period can be prevented—or that one fix works at every studio. It does mean crunch deserves scrutiny as an organizational practice, not a natural cost of creativity.
What crunch means—and why the distinction matters
“Crunch” usually means a period of unusually long hours tied to a project deadline. But not everyone who works extended hours uses that label. The IGDA’s 2023 Developer Satisfaction Survey (DSS) reported these as separate responses: 28% of respondents said their job involved crunch, while another 25% said they experienced extended or long hours they did not call crunch. Those are respondent reports, not a count of all game workers worldwide.
Keeping the categories separate matters. If a studio tracks only hours workers call crunch, it may miss sustained overtime that has become routine enough to seem normal. Conversely, combining survey categories without noting the question wording can make different experiences look interchangeable.
How common is crunch in game development?
The latest directly reviewed prevalence figures here come from the IGDA’s 2023 DSS, published in 2024. The survey found that 28% of respondents reported a job involving crunch and a further 25% reported extended or long hours they did not describe as crunch. Among respondents in crunch or long-hours periods, 30% reported working more than 60 hours per week.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These figures describe the survey sample, not the global game workforce. The survey was open from May 17 to October 20, 2023, and had 777 valid responses. It was self-reported and self-selected; the report warns that its results may not represent game workers worldwide and says respondents in the United States and Canada were likely overrepresented. The percentages should be read with those limits attached.
Earlier results are not a clean trend line. In 2014, the IGDA asked different questions and found that 54% of respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed that crunch was necessary. That result is useful evidence of developers’ views at the time, but it cannot be directly compared with the 2023 prevalence categories as if both surveys measured the same thing.

Why do game developers crunch?
In the IGDA’s 2014 survey, developers most often attributed crunch or extended overtime to poor or unrealistic scheduling. Other frequently selected explanations included feature creep, unclear expectations, insufficient staffing, and inexperienced management.
| Reported explanation | Share of 2014 respondents selecting it |
|---|---|
| Poor or unrealistic scheduling | 53% |
| Feature creep | 36% |
| Unclear expectations | 35% |
| Insufficient staffing | 31% |
| Inexperienced management | 25% |
These are developers’ reported explanations, not measured shares of overtime causally assigned to each factor. The survey does not show that scheduling caused exactly 53% of crunch, or isolate what caused overtime on any particular project. Nor are these percentages a current breakdown: they come from a 2014 survey with different questions and a different sample from the 2023 DSS.

Is crunch necessary in game development?
The evidence here does not establish that every instance of overtime is avoidable. A project can encounter unexpected problems, and the reviewed sources do not compare studios in a controlled test or quantify a universal effect of crunch on productivity, health, or game quality.
But “not always avoidable” is different from “necessary by nature.” In 2014, a majority of IGDA survey respondents—54%—disagreed or strongly disagreed that crunch was necessary. The 2014 explanations also point toward decisions that can be examined: whether the schedule was realistic, how scope changed, whether expectations were clear, whether staffing matched delivery promises, and whether management had the experience to plan production.

Crunch is an old industry concern, not a new production rule
The IGDA’s 2004 quality-of-life report described long hours as “endemic” in the game industry and warned that experienced developers fed up with repeated crunch cycles could leave, taking valuable experience with them. That report documents an industry concern; it is not a peer-reviewed causal study. Its significance is historical: the debate over long hours and retention was already explicit more than two decades ago.
A 2020 analysis of 200 game-development postmortems published from 1997 to 2019 identified 927 development problems. It found management and production problems in similar proportions, with root causes more often related to people than technology. This provides broader context for organizational difficulties in game development; it does not measure crunch prevalence or prove a single cause of overtime.

What a studio can examine instead of treating overtime as inevitable
The survey findings suggest practical questions for evaluating production, not guaranteed remedies. The reviewed evidence does not prove that any one process change will eliminate crunch.
- Scheduling: Were delivery dates based on realistic estimates, and were they revisited when production changed?
- Scope: Could features be deferred or cut when the remaining work no longer fit the schedule?
- Expectations: Did workers understand priorities, responsibilities, and what was expected of them?
- Staffing and management: Did staffing match promised delivery, and did the people planning the work have relevant production experience?
- Hours and compensation: Were extra hours exceptional or routine, and were they compensated with pay, time off, another stated arrangement, or not at all?
- Measurement: Did reporting distinguish crunch from other extended hours, so routine overtime could not disappear behind a label?
Compensation is part of the working-conditions picture
The IGDA’s 2023 DSS reported that one-third of employee respondents received no additional compensation for overtime or crunch. That finding applies to employee respondents in that survey; it should not be generalized across freelancers, self-employed developers, countries, or legal employment categories.
In the 2014 survey, 38% of respondents said they received no compensation for extra time. Because the survey years, samples, and wording differ, the two figures should not be treated as a direct measure of change.
