The anime service in the headline is Crunchyroll. Its app launched on the original Nintendo Switch on February 17, 2022, with docked, handheld and tabletop viewing. The important 2026 distinction: Crunchyroll works on the original Switch family, but it is not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2.
Which anime service came to Switch?
It was Crunchyroll, a dedicated anime service and a strong choice for viewers who prioritize anime breadth and seasonal releases. “Best” is a judgment, not a technical designation: Crunchyroll may not suit someone looking for general entertainment, a particular exclusive, or a native app on Switch 2.
Funimation arrived on Switch earlier, in December 2020. Crunchyroll’s app followed on February 17, 2022, and Crunchyroll later announced that Funimation content would begin moving to its platform. The services’ histories are easy to conflate, but the Switch app relevant to viewers today is Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll’s device guide, published August 26, 2024, described its catalog as more than 50,000 episodes and over 25,000 hours of anime series, music and movies. When did Crunchyroll launch on Nintendo Switch?
Crunchyroll announced the Nintendo Switch app on February 17, 2022, and said it was available immediately through the Nintendo eShop. This is a 2022 launch, not a new release for 2026. Which Switch models can run it?
Crunchyroll is supported on the original Nintendo Switch software environment, including the standard console, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED Model, provided the console meets the current software requirements. The app can be used in docked, handheld or tabletop mode where the hardware supports that mode. Check Crunchyroll’s supported-device list for its current requirements; a specific firmware number is not stated here because requirements can change.

Nintendo Switch 2 is not supported
Crunchyroll says it is not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2, and there is no current announcement of support. If a Crunchyroll icon transfers from an original Switch, that does not mean the app is compatible: Crunchyroll says the transferred app will not launch. Switch 2 owners should use another supported device, such as a phone, tablet, computer, smart TV, PlayStation, Xbox, Roku or Fire TV, rather than treating the console as a Crunchyroll player. - Connect the console to the internet and open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Search for Crunchyroll and select the official application.
- Choose the download or free-download option shown in your eShop, then wait for installation.
- Launch Crunchyroll from the HOME Menu, sign in to an existing account or create one, and select a show to start watching.
The app is free to download; a Premium subscription is not required just to install it. Search results and eShop labels may differ by software version or region, and app availability can depend on the country or region attached to your Nintendo Account. Crunchyroll’s catalog is also subject to territorial licensing.

What can you watch and do in the app?
- Stream in three Switch modes: watch on a TV with the console docked, in handheld mode, or in tabletop mode.
- Use your Crunchyroll account across devices: sign in on another supported device to continue using the same account.
- Download eligible episodes: offline viewing was part of the Switch launch, with Crunchyroll identifying Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan subscribers as eligible. Downloads depend on the plan and title, and require available console storage. Crunchyroll’s launch announcement.
Offline downloads are not permanent ownership. Availability can be subject to licensing, account authentication, subscription status and other service restrictions; the launch announcement does not establish that every title can be downloaded or that a download remains playable indefinitely. A microSD card can provide extra storage, but download sizes and requirements vary.

Is Crunchyroll the best anime service for you?
Crunchyroll is a good fit if you want a dedicated anime service and own an original Switch, or if you will watch on another supported device. Its appeal is anime breadth, seasonal releases and a catalog that includes series, films, music, subtitles and dubs. Licensing differs by country, and not every series has every audio or subtitle option.

- Consider a service you already pay for if you want mixed entertainment: Netflix or, in the U.S., Hulu may make more sense for a household that also wants general TV and films. Their anime lineups and licensing differ, and neither should be assumed to have a Switch app.
- Check the service with the specific title you want: Netflix, Hulu, HIDIVE or Prime Video may have a particular exclusive or licensed series that Crunchyroll does not. Their catalogs and availability change.
- If you own only Switch 2: a Crunchyroll subscription will not provide native Switch 2 playback. Use a different supported device instead.
Nintendo Switch has a limited selection of mainstream streaming apps, so availability on a phone or television does not imply that the same service has a Switch app. Check each provider’s supported-device information before subscribing for console use.

Troubleshooting common Switch problems
Crunchyroll is missing from the eShop
- Confirm you are using an original Switch, not Switch 2.
- Check that the console software is up to date and restart the console.
- Search the eShop for “Crunchyroll” while signed in to the intended Nintendo Account.
- Check the country or region on that account; eShop availability can vary.
- If the app was installed before, check the HOME Menu and software library in case its icon is no longer on the visible HOME screen.
A video will not play
Test another title to distinguish a title-specific restriction from a broader playback issue. Check the internet connection, restart the app and console, sign out and back in, and install available app or system updates. A title may be unavailable in your territory, excluded by your account access, or temporarily affected by a service or network problem. If it still fails, check Crunchyroll’s current help information or try another supported device.
An offline download will not work
Confirm that your plan qualifies, the particular title permits downloads, and the console has enough storage. Downloads can be subject to account or service validation, licensing and subscription status, so offline access should not be treated as indefinite. If the title is not available for download, try streaming it while connected.
