CS2 Developer Says Breaking Bhopping Was Unintentional as August 1 Patch Adds Fixes

After players reported impaired bhopping in July 2025, Valve said breaking it was not intentional. The August 1 notes named a penalty bug and a jump-spam clock change.

Valve developer vMcJohn said breaking bhopping in Counter-Strike 2 was not intentional, after players reported impaired bunny hopping following the July 28, 2025 update. Valve’s August 1 patch notes then explicitly addressed two bhopping behaviors: a penalty that could keep accumulating when jump was not pressed, and the timing of the jump-spam clock.

What players reported after the July 28 update

Players reported that bhopping—chaining jumps to retain momentum—was impaired after the July 28, 2025 Counter-Strike 2 update. PC Guide’s July 30 report said the exact cause was not known at the time. “Broken” therefore describes those contemporary player reports, not a verified condition in today’s build.

PC Guide’s July 30, 2025 report covered the complaints and the uncertainty around their cause.

What the developer said about intent

On July 30, HLTV reported Valve developer vMcJohn as saying: “there’s no intent to break bhopping (at this time, or in the foreseeable future).” That statement clarified Valve’s stated intent; it did not identify the technical cause of the reports or explain which change might have affected movement.

HLTV’s July 30 report contains the statement.

How the July 30 hotfixes differed from the August 1 notes

A July 30 follow-up listed fixes for movement-button changes being ignored while players adjusted view angles at very high frame rates, and for air strafing producing higher-than-usual velocities. These are movement-related fixes, but the notes did not label either one a bhopping fix. A connection to the reports is possible, not confirmed.

Valve’s August 1 notes were more explicit: they named bhopping and described two changes. Unlike the July 30 follow-up, these entries directly identify bhopping behavior, though the available notes do not provide controlled tests or a numeric before-and-after result.

What Valve changed on August 1

  1. Bhopping penalty: Valve said it fixed a bug that caused the bhopping penalty to continue accumulating even when jump had not been pressed.
  2. Jump-spam clock: Valve said the clock would start when the jump input was registered, rather than “then end of the subtick where that command was processed.” The quoted phrase preserves the wording in the published notes.

These entries describe the specific issues Valve addressed; they do not quantify how often players encountered them or how much the changes affected movement in play. Read the official Counter-Strike patch notes for August 1, 2025.

What the historical patch record establishes

  • Players reported impaired bhopping after the July 28, 2025 update, while contemporaneous coverage said the cause was unknown.
  • Valve’s developer said breaking bhopping was not intended.
  • The July 30 follow-up addressed other movement behaviors without explicitly calling them bhopping fixes.
  • The August 1 notes explicitly addressed the accumulating penalty and the jump-spam clock’s start time.

These sources document the July–August 2025 changes only. They do not establish how bhopping behaves in the live CS2 build in October 2026.
