Counter-Strike 2’s October 2025 Trade Up Contract change opened a route from five Covert skins to a knife or gloves. The change helped drive a sharp repricing across the skin market, with trackers estimating a market-cap decline approaching $2 billion in the initial shock. That figure describes estimated item value—not $2 billion in completed sales or cash losses.
What changed in the October 2025 CS2 update?
Valve expanded Trade Up Contracts in its Counter-Strike 2 update notes dated October 16, 2025. Before this change, the contract system did not offer the new Covert-to-knife-or-gloves route. Valve’s notes specified two outcomes:
- Five regular Covert items can be exchanged for one regular knife or one regular pair of gloves from a collection represented by an input item.
- Five StatTrak Covert items can be exchanged for one StatTrak knife from one of the input collections.
The distinction matters: the regular-item route included gloves, while the StatTrak route described by Valve produced a knife.
Why did the change move skin prices?
Covert skins gained a new use
Covert skins—often called “reds”—became inputs for a contract that could yield a knife or gloves. That added a new reason to buy or hold eligible Covert items, putting upward pressure on demand for those inputs.

Knives and gloves faced a new supply route
Knives and gloves had benefited from constrained availability. The new contract route made them obtainable through a different mechanism, challenging the scarcity premium buyers had attached to them. Contemporary coverage described Covert prices rising while knife and glove prices fell, although individual item movements should not be mistaken for category-wide averages.
Ars Technica reported one illustrative shift: the P90 Asimov’s median sale price on the Steam Marketplace rose from $10 to more than $100 in the immediate period. That is an example for one item and time window, not a measure of the average Covert skin price.

How much value did the CS2 skin market lose?
There was no single audited valuation. Market trackers produced different snapshots as prices moved, and news outlets reported those estimates at different times.
| Reported snapshot | Estimate and context |
|---|---|
| Pricempire estimate reported by Ars Technica, October 2025 | Market capitalization fell from just over $6 billion to just under $4.3 billion overnight; Ars also reported a decline of more than 30% overnight and a drop of more than 50% in one rare knife’s minimum price. |
| Price Empire estimate reported by Tom’s Hardware, October 2025 | The market-cap estimate moved from over $6.08 billion to a low of $3.08 billion within 38 hours. |
| Esports.net report, October 23, 2025 | The loss was described as approaching $2 billion at the time of publication. |
The differing totals reflect distinct tracker snapshots and time windows, not necessarily contradictory accounts of completed transactions. The “$2 billion” headline figure is a rounded description of an estimated market-cap decline, not an official valuation.

Does a $2 billion market-cap drop mean players lost that much cash?
No. Market capitalization estimates the aggregate value of items using market prices. It is not the amount of cash owners collectively received, and a falling estimate does not show that every holder sold at the lower price. The cited figures were tracker-derived; the reports do not provide an official audited market valuation or evidence of $2 billion in completed sales.
Was the crash permanent?
The October 2025 reports documented the immediate shock, not a settled long-term outcome. Ars Technica reported an early forecast from SAC, owner of an Irish esports team, that the market might settle 5–10% lower over the following few months. That was a prediction at the time, not a confirmed result. The contemporary reporting also described more bullish and bearish possibilities tied to demand and liquidity.

The update changed the rules governing how some high-tier items could be obtained. That affected both sides of the market: demand for eligible Covert inputs and expectations about the scarcity of knives and gloves. The resulting price response was fast, but tracker-based market-cap figures remain estimates rather than a tally of owners’ realized gains or losses.
