CS:GO Crashing, Freezing, or Showing a Black Screen on Windows 10/11? Fix CS2 Safely

Troubleshoot the “CS:GO” crashing, freezing, and black-screen symptoms that usually affect Counter-Strike 2. Identify whether Windows is still responsive, then test files, display mode, drivers, overlays, caches, temperatures, and hardware stability in the safest order.

If “CS:GO” crashes, freezes, or turns the display black on Windows 10 or 11, you are almost certainly troubleshooting Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), Valve’s current free successor to CS:GO. The right fix depends on whether Windows remains usable: a game-only crash points first to files, settings, drivers, or overlays; a total lockup, reboot, or blue screen requires Windows and hardware stability checks.

Start with these low-risk tests, in order: restart Windows, verify CS2’s files, disable overlays, update or roll back the graphics driver, and return display settings to windowed or borderless mode. Do not treat obsolete CS:GO launch commands as universal CS2 fixes.

First, identify the game and the exact failure

Valve’s current Steam listing is Counter-Strike 2, described as the Source 2 successor and a free upgrade from CS:GO. Steam may still show an installation folder named Counter-Strike Global Offensive; that legacy folder name does not mean the old live client is installed.

Classify what happens immediately before the failure. This determines which checks are useful:

Keyboard shortcuts do nothing and a forced shutdown is needed Remove overclocks and XMP/EXPO, check temperatures, power, RAM, and Windows hardware events.
Windows restarts or shows a stop code Follow Windows stability diagnostics; this is not an ordinary application crash.

Check requirements and perform safe first actions

Valve lists these minimum CS2 requirements on Steam:

  • Windows 10
  • A CPU with four hardware threads
  • 8 GB RAM
  • A 1 GB-or-better DirectX 11-compatible graphics card with Shader Model 5.0 support
  • DirectX 11
  • 85 GB available storage

These are not a guarantee of stable performance; Valve warns that systems at or near minimum specifications may have launch or gameplay problems. Check the complete listing at Steam’s Counter-Strike 2 page.

  1. Restart Windows, then exit Steam completely from the Steam menu and Task Manager.
  2. Finish pending Windows updates and record your Windows version, GPU model and driver version, RAM amount, and whether the system is overclocked or undervolted.
  3. Note whether other demanding 3D games also fail. That comparison is one of the quickest ways to separate a CS2-specific problem from system instability.

Valve’s Windows launch checklist prioritizes updating Windows and drivers, verifying files, disabling non-essential software, and checking requirements: Steam Support troubleshooting guidance.

Verify CS2’s installation before reinstalling

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files.

Steam replaces or reacquires files that do not match its manifest. Verification cannot repair a faulty GPU driver, unstable RAM, overheating, corrupted Windows components, or an overlay conflict. It may also leave a bad graphics configuration or shader cache untouched.

If the same files repeatedly fail validation, stop clicking Verify repeatedly. Check SSD health and free space, antivirus quarantine or controlled-folder protection, library permissions, and the storage drive itself.

Recover a black screen and reset display settings

When audio continues or Windows responds, the game display—not necessarily the entire PC—has failed.

  • Press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. Windows resets the graphics driver; the screen may blink and play a notification sound. This is a recovery shortcut, not a permanent repair.
  • Try Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, or Ctrl+Shift+Esc to establish whether the desktop is alive.
  • If you can reach the menu, use borderless or windowed mode while testing, the monitor’s native resolution, and a standard refresh rate.
  • Test one monitor, disconnect extra displays, and temporarily disable HDR.

If the issue appears only in exclusive fullscreen, remain in borderless/windowed mode until the driver and display path are stable. A second cable, port, or monitor can help distinguish a display connection fault.

Use launch options only as temporary experiments, one at a time, and remove them after testing. -windowed and -autoconfig can test display or configuration problems. Do not use -dxlevel 90 as a CS2 remedy: Valve’s D3D guidance associates it with older titles, including CS:GO, at Steam’s D3D troubleshooting page.

Update, roll back, or clean-install the graphics driver

When the problem began after a driver update

Open Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, if available. Alternatively install a known-stable package from the GPU manufacturer. “Latest” is not automatically best for every game and driver combination.

When the driver is old or generic

Use the official vendor download pages:

Laptop owners should check the laptop manufacturer’s support page as well; hybrid-graphics switching and power-management packages can be customized.

When corruption is suspected

Download the intended driver first, create a restore point or confirm recovery options, then use the vendor installer’s clean-install option where offered. A third-party removal utility can be an advanced fallback, not a mandatory first step. Avoid changing BIOS or registry timeout values such as TdrDelay as a routine fix; they can hide the underlying fault.

Disable overlays and software that hooks into CS2

Temporarily disable one category at a time, reproduce the failure, then re-enable software in groups to identify the conflict:

Valve maintains a list of programs that may interfere with Steam in its Windows troubleshooting guidance. Do not leave security software disabled indefinitely; isolate the conflict, then restore protection.

Clear shader cache and reset configuration cautiously

After a game or driver update, a stale shader cache can contribute to stutter, freezes, or crashes. In Windows, use Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files and select DirectX Shader Cache, or use Disk Cleanup. The first launch afterward may take longer while shaders rebuild.

Back up CS2 settings before deleting game-specific configuration files. Removing configuration can erase keybinds, video options, and custom data; do not delete the entire Steam userdata folder as a generic fix. Cache deletion is a targeted test, not a performance ritual. If the crash returns immediately, investigate the driver, hardware stability, or a game regression.

When a crash is really a Windows or hardware problem

For a persistent blank screen outside CS2, follow Microsoft’s Windows 10/11 blank-screen guidance at Microsoft Support. Check Device Manager → Display adapters for warnings, and inspect Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System for display-driver resets, WHEA hardware errors, and unexpected shutdowns. eventvwr.msc opens Event Viewer; dxdiag records Windows and display-driver details.

If Windows restarts or shows a blue screen, use Microsoft’s unexpected restart and stop-code guidance. Save the stop code and dump information instead of treating it as a CS2 setting.

Remove instability before stress-testing

  • Return CPU and GPU overclocks and undervolts to stock.
  • Temporarily disable XMP or EXPO if there are full freezes, reboots, or memory-related errors.
  • Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while reproducing the issue.
  • Confirm desktop GPU power cables are fully seated; on laptops, use the correct AC adapter and a high-performance power profile.
  • Try another display cable, port, or monitor on a desktop.
  • Run a memory test such as mdsched.exe when crashes are random or show access violations.
  • Check SSD health and free space when Steam files repeatedly fail validation.

CS2 failing alone makes files, configuration, driver interaction, overlays, or a CS2 regression more plausible. If several games fail, or the display cuts out across Windows, prioritize driver, temperature, power, RAM, GPU, and Windows diagnostics. A black screen by itself does not prove that the GPU is dying.

Windows 10 versus Windows 11

The diagnostic sequence is broadly the same. Windows 10 is explicitly listed in Valve’s minimum requirements; Windows 11 is a modern supported environment, but behavior can vary with the specific Windows build, GPU driver, HDR, hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, overlays, and laptop graphics switching. Insider or preview builds deserve separate suspicion: reproduce on a stable public build before blaming CS2.

Settings labels can differ by release, so Device Manager and Event Viewer remain useful on both versions. Do not change registry graphics-timeout values merely because the system is on Windows 10 or 11.

When to reinstall or seek repair

Reinstall CS2 only after file verification, display reset, overlay isolation, and driver testing. Reinstalling cannot repair overheating, unstable RAM, a failing GPU, or damaged Windows components.

Stop applying random tweaks and seek hardware or qualified technician help when multiple games fail, the display goes black outside CS2, the PC repeatedly reboots or shows stop codes, WHEA or memory errors appear, or there are clear power, thermal, cable, or physical symptoms. Record your CPU and GPU, RAM and XMP/EXPO state, Windows build, driver version, exact launch point, whether audio continues, other affected games, and Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor errors.

A compact decision path

  1. Does Windows still respond? If yes, press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B, disable overlays, verify CS2 files, and reset display settings.
  2. If Windows does not respond: wait briefly, then force a shutdown only as a last resort. On reboot, remove overclocks and memory profiles, check temperatures and power, and inspect Windows errors.
  3. If several games or Windows itself fail: stop treating the issue as a CS2-only problem and continue with driver, RAM, GPU, storage, and system-stability diagnostics.
