CSGO/CS2 Crashing on Startup or Showing a Black Screen? How to Fix It

If “CSGO” closes before the menu, stops at the Valve logo, or opens to a black screen, the current Steam game is Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), app ID 730. Start with the least destructive fixes: restart Steam and Windows, remove launch options, verify the installation, recover a safe display mode, then isolate graphics drivers and overlay software. Do not delete your settings or reinstall the game until those checks are complete.

First, identify the failure

The symptom determines whether you should troubleshoot CS2, the display driver, or Windows itself.

CSGO or CS2? Use the right instructions

Valve’s current Steam product is Counter-Strike 2, not the original Counter-Strike: Global Offensive branch. The steps below target CS2. Old CS:GO commands and folders may not apply. In particular, do not add -dxlevel 90 because an old support page mentions it: Valve’s D3D guidance is tied to older Source games and legacy CS:GO advice.

1. Restart cleanly and remove every launch option

1. Exit CS2.
2. Choose Steam → Exit, rather than only closing the window.
3. Restart Windows, open Steam, and let it finish any update.
4. In Library, right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Properties.
5. On General, clear the entire Launch Options box.
6. Launch CS2 with the box empty.

Remove old or copied commands such as -vulkan, -dx11, -high, -threads, -freq, and undocumented “FPS” tweaks before testing. Steam’s general launch guidance recommends a fresh restart, current Windows and drivers, file verification, disabled non-essential software, and a requirements check: Valve launch troubleshooting.

2. Verify CS2’s installed files

1. Open Steam → Library.
2. Right-click Counter-Strike 2 → Properties.
3. Select Installed Files.
4. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
5. Wait for the scan, restart Steam, and test again.

Steam says verification can replace missing or damaged content and may take several minutes: Steam file-verification instructions. A few files may fail validation because they are local configuration files; that result alone does not prove the repair failed. Verification will not fix a bad GPU driver, overlay conflict, or invalid monitor mode, and you should not run several verification jobs alongside heavy disk activity.

3. Recover from a bad resolution or fullscreen mode

If the problem began after changing resolution, refresh rate, HDR, monitor arrangement, or display mode, use a temporary diagnostic option.

1. Open CS2 Properties → General.
2. Enter -windowed in Launch Options and launch.
3. If that does not help, test -safe instead.
4. Once the game opens, choose a supported resolution and refresh rate, close CS2 normally, then remove the temporary option.

Valve maintains a display-focused launch-settings page at Steam video and display launch settings. Source 2 options can change between builds, so treat -windowed and -safe as tests, not permanent performance settings. You can also try Alt + Enter while the game has focus to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode.

4. Reset the display driver and test the signal path

When Windows remains responsive, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B and wait for the display to refresh. Then try Alt + Tab and Alt + Enter. Close CS2 from Task Manager if necessary.

If the monitor still loses signal, reconnect the cable and test another cable, port, or monitor. On a desktop, connect the monitor to the discrete GPU rather than the motherboard output. Temporarily use one monitor, a standard refresh rate, and HDR off. If the blank screen affects Windows outside CS2, use Windows Recovery or Safe Mode as described by Microsoft.

5. Update, clean-install, or roll back the GPU driver

When the driver is old

Install the current driver for the actual NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU from its manufacturer and restart. A generic Windows driver may not provide the required game components. Valve identifies outdated graphics drivers as a common cause of launch and D3D initialization failures.

When the problem started after an update

Try the previous stable driver or the installer’s clean/factory-reset option. A newer driver can introduce a regression in one game even when other games work.

When installation looks corrupted

Use the manufacturer’s supported cleanup process, not a third-party “driver updater.” Laptop owners should also check the laptop maker’s package if switching between integrated and discrete graphics is involved. 6. Isolate overlays and background software

Disable one non-essential hook at a time, reboot when it installs a low-level service, and test CS2:

• Steam Overlay
• Discord Overlay
• NVIDIA or AMD overlay features
• Xbox Game Bar
• OBS and other capture tools
• MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner statistics overlays
• RGB and motherboard-control utilities
• Third-party FPS counters
• Overclocking, undervolting, and GPU-tuning tools

Valve specifically recommends disabling non-essential software that can interfere with Steam or a game. If security software is suspected, use its supported exclusion for the CS2 executable; do not leave antivirus protection permanently disabled.

7. Reset configuration and shader data carefully

Only do this after verification, display recovery, driver testing, and overlay isolation. Damaged video settings, local configuration, or shader caches can prevent startup, particularly after an update.

• Back up autoexec, keybind, crosshair, and video-setting files.
• Rename suspected CS2 configuration or Steam userdata folders instead of deleting them.
• Change one folder or cache at a time, then test.
• Expect settings to reset and shader rebuilding to cause longer loading or temporary stutter.

Community guides describe possible locations, including Steam userdata for app ID 730, but those paths are not guaranteed for every build or installation. One example is this Steam Community guide. Do not delete the entire Steam installation or all CS2 data as a first-line fix.

8. Check requirements and system stability

Valve lists these current CS2 minimums for Windows:

See the current Counter-Strike 2 technical-support page. Minimums are not a guarantee of reliable startup or performance. Check that the drive is healthy and has free space, the GPU appears correctly in Device Manager and the vendor panel, a laptop is using its intended discrete GPU, temperatures are normal, the power supply and PCIe cables are adequate, and any overclock or undervolt is returned to stock. If the issue began after a Windows Insider update, test a supported stable build.

9. Repair Steam or reinstall only as a late step

1. Exit Steam completely and restart Windows.
2. Update Steam.
3. Verify CS2 again and check that its folders are not read-only.
4. Retest before changing the installation.
5. If Steam itself is damaged, use Valve’s repair guidance, preserving the steamapps folder where instructed.
6. Reinstall CS2 only after the preceding checks.

Valve’s “game unavailable” guidance is at Steam support. Reinstallation replaces game files but cannot repair a failing GPU, display cable, driver regression, or overlay conflict.

Linux and SteamOS

Windows paths and driver steps do not directly apply to SteamOS or Linux. Confirm current Vulkan drivers, use the Linux branch of Valve’s troubleshooting, and avoid copying Windows configuration instructions. When CS2 is not the real problem

Escalate to Windows, GPU, power, thermal, or hardware diagnosis if the computer reboots, blue-screens, loses signal in other 3D applications, shows artifacts, drops the GPU from Device Manager, remains unstable after CS2 closes, or multiple games crash.
