“cstart.dll was not found,” “The file cstart.dll is missing or corrupted,” and “Error loading cstart.dll. The specified module could not be found” are common forms of this error. cstart.dll is a Canon component used by printer and imaging-device installation software, so the safest fix is to identify the Canon program requesting it and repair or reinstall that program.
The 60-second answer
Do not download cstart.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. That can introduce a tampered file, place the wrong architecture on the computer, and leave the damaged Canon installation untouched.
Instead:
- Note when the error appears.
- Identify the Canon printer, scanner, camera utility, or old Canon installer involved.
- Repair or uninstall the related Canon software.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the correct package for the exact device from Canon’s official support portal.
- Reinstall it and reconnect the device only when the installer asks.
cstart.dll is identified in public file metadata as the Canon PnP Vendor Installer DLL, published by Canon, Inc. It is not a normal Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ file, DirectX file, or .NET file.
Public metadata commonly describes it as an older 32-bit Windows component, but Canon’s original distribution manifest is not publicly confirmed. Do not assume that a separate 64-bit copy exists or that a particular version is correct for every Canon product.

Why Windows is asking for cstart.dll
The most likely causes are:
- A Canon printer or scanner installation is incomplete or damaged.
- An old Canon device was removed without removing all its software.
- A startup entry, scheduled task, or service still points to an uninstalled Canon installer.
- The wrong Canon package was installed for the device or Windows architecture.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Windows is reporting a missing dependency used by the Canon program.
- A file with the same name is being requested by an unrelated or suspicious executable.
The exact Canon model cannot be identified from cstart.dll alone. The file has been associated with older Canon printer packages, but the filename does not prove which printer, scanner, camera utility, or driver owns it.
The wording also matters. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cstart.dll itself is absent. It can mean that Windows found the DLL but could not load one of its dependencies.
First, identify the program requesting the file
Before repairing anything, determine what launches the error.
If it appears during startup
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Canon entries or an item with an unfamiliar publisher.
- Right-click a likely entry and select Open file location.
- Record the executable’s folder and name.
- If the entry clearly belongs to an obsolete Canon installation, right-click it and choose Disable.
Disabling a startup item prevents the message from appearing while you investigate. It does not repair the Canon software. Do not disable an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar.
Also inspect scheduled tasks:
- Press Windows key, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that mention Canon or point to an old Canon installation folder.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to see which executable it launches.
- Disable or remove it only when its Canon ownership is clear.
If it appears while installing or detecting a device
Write down the device model shown on the printer, scanner, or camera. Do not choose a similar model from Canon’s download selector. The package must match the exact device.
If the message appears after connecting a USB device:
- Disconnect the Canon device.
- Restart Windows.
- Leave it disconnected while removing or repairing the software.
- Reconnect it only when the Canon installer requests it.
If it appears when launching an application
Right-click the application shortcut and select Open file location. Check whether the executable is inside a Canon folder. If it is not, another application may be requesting a file that happens to have a Canon-related name.
You can also check the Windows event record:
- Press Windows key, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Read the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
If no Canon program, device, or installation path appears anywhere, do not restore a loose copy of cstart.dll based on the filename alone.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Canon software
This is the primary fix for cstart.dll.
Repair it from Windows Settings
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Select the Canon printer utility, scanner software, camera utility, or driver package connected with the error.
- Select Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon application or device again.
If Repair is not available, or the message returns, use Uninstall from the same screen.
Remove older software from Control Panel
Older Canon packages may not appear with a useful repair option in Settings.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Canon program related to the device.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove every Canon entry automatically if you still use another Canon printer, scanner, or camera. Remove the package connected to the error, then install the correct replacement.
Install the official Canon package
Use Canon’s official support portal and search by the exact product model. Select the driver or software package for your version of Windows. If Canon lists separate 32-bit and 64-bit packages, choose the one matching Windows, while remembering that an older 32-bit Canon installer may still run on 64-bit Windows.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The usual installation sequence is:
- Download a fresh package from Canon.
- Disconnect the USB device if the installer instructions recommend it.
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose the exact device when prompted.
- Connect the device only when requested.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page or open the Canon scanning utility.
The fix worked if the application opens without the DLL message and Windows can communicate with the device. If the installer reports that the device is unsupported, do not force an older package into Windows. Check whether Canon provides a compatible package for that model and operating system.
If you are manually hunting through several Canon packages and cannot tell which driver matches the device, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or missing drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the correct Canon package remains the definitive fix when that package owns cstart.dll.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined a legitimate Canon file, or it may have flagged a suspicious file that only claims to belong to Canon.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries recorded when the error began.
- Expand a relevant detection.
- Check the original file path and the detected publisher.
- Restore it only if the path is clearly inside the known Canon installation and the publisher is verified.
- If Windows offers Allow on device, use it only after that verification.
Do not restore an item simply because its filename is cstart.dll. A copy in a temporary folder, a user profile folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves further investigation.

Fix 3: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit situation
Older Canon installation software may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. That is not automatically a problem. Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer, but the application still needs the correct 32-bit dependencies.
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
A 64-bit Windows system can use a 32-bit Canon application. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, and do not assume that placing it in SysWOW64 will solve the issue. A DLL supplied by an application normally belongs in that application’s own installation directory.
If the Canon installer explicitly reports a missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, install the runtime package requested by the installer from Microsoft. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit Canon program generally needs the x86 runtime. Installing a runtime will not replace cstart.dll itself.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
cstart.dll appears to be third-party, so System File Checker is not the primary repair method. Use these commands when Windows also has symptoms such as damaged built-in apps, failed updates, unexplained system errors, or corrupted protected files.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon software again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command downloads or reconstructs a missing Canon DLL.
If the commands report that they repaired files, restart before testing. If they report that no integrity violations were found and the Canon error remains, return to the Canon repair or reinstall procedure.
When repeatedly running DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon application that owns cstart.dll.

Fix 5: Install pending updates or use Windows repair reinstall
If the error began after a Windows upgrade or an interrupted installation, first install pending updates.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon program.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. It is a Windows repair option, not a replacement for the Canon driver package.
Fix 6: Use Device Manager to remove a broken device installation
Device Manager can help when Windows retains a damaged printer or imaging-device entry.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Find the Canon device.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the damaged Canon package.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Canon package.
- Reconnect the device when prompted.
Do not uninstall unrelated USB controllers or system devices. If the Canon device is not listed, look under Unknown devices and inspect its properties before removing anything.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore when the timing is clear
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after removing Canon software or installing a driver and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key, type Create a restore point, and open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace the Canon reinstall. After Windows returns, install the correct Canon package if the device is still needed.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
A common suggestion is:
regsvr32 cstart.dll
Do not run this as a general repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that cstart.dll is a COM or ActiveX component that should be registered this way.
If a legitimate Canon installer needs registration, the installer should perform it. A registration error usually means the wrong DLL, wrong architecture, missing dependency, or wrong installation procedure is being used.
What not to do
Avoid these fixes:
- Downloading
cstart.dllfrom an unverified DLL archive. - Copying the file into both
System32andSysWOW64. - Replacing a 32-bit file with a supposed 64-bit version.
- Renaming another DLL to
cstart.dll. - Running
regsvr32repeatedly. - Disabling antivirus permanently.
- Installing a Canon package for a similar but different model.
- Using SFC as a way to restore third-party application files.
These actions can create version conflicts, hide the actual owner of the file, or leave a malicious binary in a trusted directory.

If the Canon device is obsolete
If Canon no longer provides a compatible driver or application, first remove the broken startup entry and old software rather than preserving a recurring boot error.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Check Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Check Task Scheduler for clearly identified Canon leftovers.
- Check the executable path before disabling or removing anything.
- Restart Windows.
If you still need the device, determine whether Canon provides a supported package for the current Windows version. Do not force an unrelated driver or download an unverified DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Is cstart.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a protected Windows file. It is associated with Canon printer and imaging-device installation software.
Is `cstart.dll safe?
A genuine copy installed by a Canon package can be legitimate. Safety depends on the file’s location, publisher, digital signature, and the executable requesting it. The filename alone is not proof.
Which Canon printer installed it?
The filename cannot identify the exact model. Check the erroring executable, installation folder, installed programs, device list, and Event Viewer.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Reinstall the Canon software that owns the file. A loose download may be malicious, incompatible, or unable to fix a missing dependency.
Is it a 32-bit DLL?
Public metadata commonly identifies a Win32 or x86 Canon build, but Canon’s original manifests are not confirmed here. Match the device software and dependencies rather than guessing from the filename.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Only if the Canon installer reports a separate missing Visual C++ dependency. Visual C++ Redistributable is not the normal source of cstart.dll.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found?
The named DLL may be missing, or one of its dependencies may be unavailable. Repairing or reinstalling the owning Canon package is the best first step.
What if the error appears on every boot?
Inspect Startup apps, Task Scheduler, installed Canon programs, and the path of the executable producing the message. Disable or remove only a leftover Canon entry that you can identify confidently.
