If cuesdk.x64_2015.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the program named in the error rather than downloading the DLL separately.
What the file is
Corsair’s CUE SDK allows third-party software to communicate with iCUE and control compatible Corsair lighting hardware. The DLL is an application component, not a Windows system file and not part of the Visual C++ Redistributable.
The x64 part identifies the 64-bit build. The 2015 portion refers to an older Microsoft compiler and runtime generation used when that SDK build was produced. It does not mean that Windows requires a file with this name.
| Property | Identification |
|---|---|
| File | cuesdk.x64_2015.dll |
| Category | Third-party application component |

Find the application that needs the DLL
The filename alone cannot identify the exact parent application. Start with the program named in the message. It may be a game, launcher, RGB application, overlay, or visualizer.
Check these places:
- Read the full error window and note the executable name.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details and look for the program that failed.
- Right-click it, if it appears, and select Open file location.
- In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs → Application and inspect errors recorded at the time of the failure.
- Check the game launcher’s error log or crash log.
Public file listings have associated this DLL with software such as Wallpaper Engine and Metro Exodus, and crash reports have shown it loaded by Diablo III. Those examples do not prove which program is responsible on your PC. Repair the application shown in your own error or log.
Error messages this guide covers
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because CUESDK.x64_2015.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because CUESDK.x64_2015.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading CUESDK.x64_2015.dll.”
- “There was a problem starting CUESDK.x64_2015.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “CUESDK.x64_2015.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. A missing-file message usually means the DLL was deleted, quarantined, or omitted from the installation. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean Windows found CUESDK but could not find one of its dependencies.
Fix 1: Verify or repair the owning application
This is the most likely solution after an update, failed installation, disk cleanup, or game-file corruption.
First close the affected program and its launcher. Then use the launcher’s repair function.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
Epic Games
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to complete, then start the game again.
Battle.net or another launcher
Look for Scan and Repair, Repair, Verify, or Check for updates in the game’s menu. The exact wording varies by launcher. Allow the launcher to replace missing files rather than copying a DLL from another installation.

- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer.
A successful repair normally recreates the DLL inside the application’s own installation folder. If the error returns immediately, continue with the antivirus and dependency checks below.
Fix 2: Reinstall the parent application
Use this when verification reports unrepaired files, the installation is incomplete, or the error began after an interrupted update.
- Back up saves, profiles, presets, or custom layouts if the application stores them outside the cloud.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application vendor or use the official game launcher.
- Install the correct 64-bit build when the application offers an architecture choice.
- Start the program before restoring custom modifications or third-party add-ons.
Do not install only cuesdk.x64_2015.dll into a newly created folder. The owning application may require other files, registry settings, services, or a matching SDK revision.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or a change in detection rules.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an entry associated with the affected application or
cuesdk.x64_2015.dll. - Expand the entry and review its path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The file was inside the legitimate application directory.
- The application came from its official installer or launcher.
- The quarantine entry clearly refers to that installation.
- You have confirmed the application is not modified or pirated.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected threat can expose the device. If the source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the application from its official source instead.
After restoring a legitimate file, run the application’s verification or repair function. If Windows Security quarantines the replacement again, contact the application vendor rather than repeatedly restoring it.

Fix 4: Repair the Microsoft runtime dependency
The CUE SDK DLL is not the Visual C++ Redistributable. However, it may depend on Microsoft runtime files.
Look at the complete error. A Visual C++ repair is relevant when it also names files such as:

Install or repair the official Microsoft Visual C++ package that matches the application architecture. A 64-bit application requires the x64 package. Install the x86 package only when a separate 32-bit application needs it.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program.
- If the CUE SDK error remains but no Microsoft runtime is mentioned, return to repairing the parent application. Reinstalling Visual C++ will not recreate a missing CUE SDK DLL.
If the program is 32-bit, it uses the separate 32-bit SDK DLL rather than the x64 file. Do not substitute a 32-bit DLL for cuesdk.x64_2015.dll.
Fix 5: Update the application and related device software
An update may have installed a new executable without copying its matching SDK files. Check the application, game launcher, and Corsair software for pending updates.
For a Corsair RGB installation:
- Open iCUE if it starts.
- Check its settings or update section.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair the application that produced the error.
If the error began after a graphics, motherboard, USB, or RGB-device change, open Device Manager:

- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Universal Serial Bus controllers, Human Interface Devices, Display adapters, or Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver downloaded from the device manufacturer.
Do not treat a device driver as a replacement for the CUE SDK DLL. The driver step is relevant only when the application also reports device, USB, RGB, or hardware communication failures.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when manually checking several hardware categories is becoming difficult. Its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix for a missing CUE SDK file.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only as a later step
cuesdk.x64_2015.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when you also have damaged Windows components, servicing errors, or unrelated system files failing.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If these commands report repaired Windows components but the application still reports the same DLL error, repair or reinstall the parent application.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
The file normally belongs beside the executable that loads it, or in that application’s bin or runtime folder. Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and will not repair a damaged installation.
Do not download a random standalone DLL
A download may contain the wrong SDK revision, the wrong architecture, malware, or a damaged binary. Even a genuine DLL may fail because its dependencies are missing or because the application searches only its own installation directory.
Use the application’s official repair or reinstall process. Developers may also distribute SDK packages through their official release channels, but the parent application remains the safest source for the exact build it expects.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary SDK or runtime DLL generally is not repaired by registration. Running commands such as these is not a normal solution:
regsvr32 cuesdk.x64_2015.dll
If registration fails, it does not prove that the file is missing or that Windows is damaged.

If the message says “not designed to run on Windows”
This wording usually indicates corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a replaced or tampered binary.
- Close the application.
- Check whether the DLL is inside the expected application directory.
- Do not overwrite it with a downloaded copy.
- Run the launcher’s verification or repair function.
- If verification fails, uninstall and reinstall the application.
- Run a complete Windows Security scan if the file appeared in an unexpected location.
A 64-bit application needs the x64 build. A 32-bit application needs its separate 32-bit SDK component.
FAQ
Is cuesdk.x64_2015.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Corsair CUE/iCUE SDK component bundled with a third-party application.
Which program owns the file?
The filename alone cannot tell you. Identify the executable in the error, Event Viewer, launcher log, or Task Manager, then repair that application.
Should I install Visual C++ 2015?
Only when the error also names a missing Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP140.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll. Visual C++ does not replace a missing CUE SDK DLL.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
Windows may have found CUESDK but failed to load one of its dependencies. Check the complete error and repair the application and its official Microsoft runtime dependencies.
Recommended Free Tools
Can SFC restore this file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this is a third-party application file.
What if the error started after antivirus removed the file?
Review Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Restore only after validating the application and file path. Otherwise reinstall the application.
What should I provide to support if nothing works?
Record the affected program, full error text, DLL path, Windows version, application version, antivirus action, and whether the file exists in the application folder. Contact the application vendor, because it controls how the SDK is packaged.
