For most compact desks, multi-monitor setups, and work that depends on straight lines, a flat 27-inch monitor is the practical choice. Choose a curved one if you sit centered, have room for its stand, and prefer a more enveloping view for racing, flight, or open-world games. Neither shape is inherently faster for gaming; fit and the monitor’s actual specifications matter more than curvature alone.
Start with desk depth and where you sit
A monitor’s shape affects how it fits your space and how its screen sits in front of you. LG’s comparison notes that curved monitors may need more desk depth and offer less placement flexibility, while flat models are generally easier to position in compact spaces and conventional multi-monitor layouts. Check the dimensions of the complete monitor, especially the stand, rather than relying on the 27-inch diagonal alone.
Also consider your usual seating position. A curved screen is designed to be viewed from in front of it, so its wraparound effect is most relevant when you sit centered. If you move around often, share the screen, or need to arrange displays in different orientations, a flat screen is typically easier to position. These are practical fit considerations, not guarantees about comfort or performance.
Which shape fits your gaming and desk setup?
| Your priority | Lean toward | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small or shallow desk | Flat | Placement is generally more predictable; check the particular stand depth and your viewing distance. (LG) |
| Two or more screens, including mixed portrait and landscape | Flat | Flat screens are generally easier to arrange and align in modular setups. (LG) |
| Racing, flight simulation, or open-world games | Curved, if you prefer the feel | The wraparound impression may make these games feel more enveloping, but that is a subjective preference, not evidence of faster play. (LG) |
| Competitive shooter aiming | Either | Choose based on preference and the monitor’s tested gaming qualities. Available display-size research does not establish an aiming advantage for curved screens. (2023 FPS aiming preprint) |
| CAD, architecture, print layout, or other straight-line work | Flat | Predictable straight geometry can be useful for precision-oriented work. (LG) |
| Eye comfort | Neither by default | Viewing distance and individual preference matter; shape alone does not guarantee less eye strain. (LG) |
Curvature is not a gaming performance tier
There is no universal evidence here that a curved or flat screen improves gaming performance. LG describes immersion as a potential appeal of curved monitors and predictable geometry as a practical advantage of flat ones. A Samsung executive made a similar viewing-distance argument about the specific S27D590C in the company’s 2014 release, saying its curve provided “nearly uniform viewing distances” from the center to the edges. That was a manufacturer statement about one product, not an independent finding that applies to every 27-inch monitor.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
A 2023 preprint on FPS aiming reports two experiments and a small statistically significant improvement associated with a larger display in one comparison. The authors suggest display size, resolution, and natural viewing distance likely contributed. It did not test curved versus flat monitors, so it cannot establish a curvature advantage.
What does 1500R mean?
The R value describes the nominal radius of a screen’s curve in millimeters. A lower number indicates a tighter curve. For example, MSI’s 27-inch MAG 274CQF and ASUS’s 27-inch VA27VQSE both list 1500R. That shared specification does not make the monitors equivalent or prove that 1500R is ideal for every desk.

- Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
- Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
- New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.
Fit depends on more than the R rating: consider the screen’s physical width, where you sit, available desk depth, and whether you like the curved view. The available evidence does not establish one optimum radius for all 27-inch setups.

| Model | Listed specifications | What the example shows |
|---|---|---|
| MSI MAG 274CQF (MSI US Store) | QHD (2560 × 1440), Rapid VA, 1500R, 180 Hz, Adaptive Sync, tilt adjustment. (MSI) | A curved model can combine a 27-inch screen with a high refresh-rate listing and QHD resolution. |
| ASUS VA27VQSE (ASUS USA) | Full HD, 1500R, up to 75 Hz, Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync, VESA wall mountable, with tilt, swivel, and height adjustment listed. (ASUS) | The same listed curvature rating can appear on a monitor with substantially different resolution and refresh-rate specifications. |
When comparing candidates, check resolution, panel technology, refresh rate, response behavior, adaptive sync, stand adjustments, ports, warranty, and current price. Compare like with like—for example, monitors with similar resolution and panel type—rather than attributing a specification difference to the screen shape. For response behavior, look for independent testing of the specific model rather than relying on a response-time figure alone. No flat model was evaluated head-to-head with the examples above, and current prices and stock are not established here.

A simple way to choose
- Choose flat if desk space is tight, you plan to align multiple screens, or straight-line work is part of your routine.
- Consider curved if you sit centered, have sufficient room for the screen and stand, and personally prefer a more enveloping view in games.
- If neither shape clearly suits you, prioritize the complete specification and fit: measure the monitor with its stand, then compare the features that matter to your games and desk.
